What our customers say about their holidays

First the good news !
This is a pretty little cottage within the courtyard of a restored & converted stable block. The village of West Felton is a lovely quiet Shropshire village just off the main A5 trunk road but far enough off it to be very quiet and peaceful. All the villagers we met were friendly & chatty and there is a very useful village shop and post office (post office open Wednesdays a.m.only). Sadly the village pub, the Punch Bowl, has seen better times and needs a big chunk of investment to compete with the nearby Queens Head just a mile down the road. Hope it survives ! Oswestry is just a few minutes down the road where there is more choice & several supermarkets. The cottage itself has been updated with new kitchen, bathroom and two very pleasant bedrooms (one with super king bed !). The cottage is small, ok for two but we though four adults would struggle. The refurbished bathroom is downstairs next to the kitchen which can be a bit of a hassle if you need a quick dash to the loo in the night ! This involves negotiating the steep narrow staircase with some strange step arrangements where they meet the bedrooms - needs a lot of care to negotiate safely ! The "not so good" bits ! - We have stayed at lots of Sykes cottages but this is the first one where we almost turned round and left when we saw the lounge carpet. It truly looked as though someone had held a pop festival on it, grubby, badly stained. Only fit for the skip I'm afraid. Really needs a hard floor to be in keeping with the cottage character & to cope with the wear & tear it obviously gets. The place needs a bit of TLC in a few places too - my first shower had to be aborted due to the shower waste not working properly. Had to set to and clean it out which was a bit unexpected. Similar the dishwasher which needed its filters cleaning out to work properly and the detergent dispenser wouldn't close so it was hand washing up - again not a show stopper. To maximise space the lounge has a fold down dining table with some integrated dining chairs - truly the most uncomfortable things we have ever sat on even with the addition of a cushion ! Its a shame that a bit more attention to detail & maintenance hadn't been paid because its a lovely place & could be a lot better. The owners were away when we were there otherwise we would have knocked on the door and explained all of this to them. Don't be put off, its a nice place but bear in mind the downstairs bathroom, steep narrow stairs if you have mobility issues. This is a dog friendly cottage & we had our dog with us - however the two black cats & the free range hens are boss so watch the dog !!

Nice cottage in a good location within Weobley.
Access directly from the rear garden to walks is a bonus. Parking was no problem, the neighbours all seem to park directly outside their properties, leaving plenty of space. The are how ever a few issues that need to be addressed. We went to use the grill on the first evening and found a pool of solid fat covering the bottom. This made the grill unusable and a potential fire risk. In addition there were were quite a few raised nails in the floorboards in the landing room and the threshold to the bedroom on the 1st floor. I caught my socks a few times and they wre noticeable in bare feet. The heating of the cottage needs to be reviewed. The ground floor rooms were very cold the first 3 nights, despite the rather small radiators being hot to the touch and the thermostat turned up. I also noted the heating was set to 14 degrees on the mornings I checked (7:30am and 8:25am). It was therefore cold downstairs in the morning. A couple of free standing heaters would be a welcome addition.

Weâve stayed in Broadway before - itâs a lovely village and the walk up to Broadway Tower is a nice one.
Very handy location for driving around the other Cotswolds villages. The cottage is ideally located off the Main Street a short walk to parking bay and the village centre. Secure garden for the dog and would be a nice place to sit with great privacy in better weather. The only gripe we have is that the cottage is a bit âtiredâ, in the bathroom & loo in particular ( yes tired, not âshabby chicâ) and the standard of cleaning could have been much better - dirty kitchen worktops, mouldy shower cubicle (which was very small), cooker hood switches very greasy, fridge unclean, downstairs loo dirty etc - lest there be any doubt we do have pictures of all this. If this was attended to, we would not hesitate to recommend. But as previous owners & operators of self catering cottages ourselves, we did expect a better standard.

My only gripe is the timing.
We have been renting cottages in the UK for well over 20 years and times have changed dramatically. They started to change gradually about 10 years ago but after Covid with extra cleaning restriction there was a big change. Obviously at the time we could understand why. The problem is they have never gone back to pre covid times; the rental companies have taken advantage of the Covid situation. It is extremely inconvenient when you have been travelling many hours and all you want is to sit down peacefully with a cup of tea but you have to hang around until 4pm. As we have a long journey we like to start early to avoid some of the heavy traffic. Also having to leave at 9am is very early it always used to be about 10am. I really think the rentals could help us out on this one.

We spent a wonderful Christmas week in this exceptional and historic cottage, located in the beautiful village of Weobley.
We could have happily stayed for weeks, enjoying walks from the garden gate across the castle mound to the open fields beyond. Or exploring the incredible book collection in the first-floor library. The house itself is immaculately clean, cosy and warm, and equipped to a very high standard, so cooking was a pleasure. The owner, Merlys, also very kindly left us and our dog some provisions on our arrival which made us feel very welcome (thank you so much!). This part of Herefordshire, with its mistletoe laden orchards and dark, starry skies, was the perfect setting to enjoy the beauty and stillness of the winter solstice, and a magical, memorable Christmas. It was a privilege to stay here and we are already planning our return.
