  An absolute gem of a cottage in a picturesque village with a fantastic pub 2 minutes down the road serving great beer and fabulous food.

  The cottage itself was warm and very well equipped with beams throughout a lovely stone floor in the living area. The kitchen has all mod cons and we cooked and ate in several times. Tea towels, washing up liquid, hand wash, dishwasher tablets and dishcloths were all provided. The spacious bedrooms are carpeted and have high vaulted beamed ceilings. The beds are extremely comfortable and had nice quality bedding so we all slept really well. Great shower with plenty of hot water but if you need more you can control that and the heating yourself. We didn’t need to as there was more than enough for the four of us. The en-suite bedroom has a toilet, sink and bath with a shower attachment too. The owner lives next door and was very welcoming and friendly. We arrived to find a delicious Yorkshire Brack, organic whole milk and eggs waiting for us which was a lovely touch. You can sit outside a have breakfast in the lovely little dog friendly enclosed garden which overlooks fields if the weather is warm enough. You can buy eggs, milk and logs for the wood burner in the village. The nearest shops are 2 1/2 miles away in Kirbymoorside which we walked to on footpaths. There’s a large Co-op and a smaller Spar if needed as well as smaller independent shops and cafes. There are some great walks right from the doorstep with Hutton-le-Hole easily reachable across the moors. We also visited Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby which are under an hour by car. The whole area is stunningly beautiful and very dog friendly with most pubs, cafes and shops welcoming you in. We wouldn’t hesitate to return.

  Sykes Staff have been nothing but friendly and accommodating, they were not to fault for our unsatisfactory stay.

  The property however had dust webs left in corners (despite cleaners) and offered no QR code/Covid guidelines, no antibacterial hand wash or sanitiser (good job we took our own). We were greeted by a wasps nest by the front door obviously using the property’s roof. The door with its large double glass windows offered no privacy from passers by using the shared drive and communal laundry room given the fact the shower and toilet were right behind it which resulted in us having to hang a towel over the door. The pictures of the garden were misleading. It clearly shows a grass area which had been cordoned off and belonged to another property which only left the stoned area you see in the pictures which would have been fantastic if it weren’t for the fact they are not friendly to the paws of our fury friends which meant our pet friendly get away wasn’t in fact so pet friendly at all and his off lead play time went out the window. The directions to the property are not clear, even using ‘what four words’ we had difficulty. In the end we were forced to contact Sykes which then had to contact the owners who added another couple of steps to the directions. Frankly if it weren’t for the fact we had to rely on a family member for travel and our signal was so spotty we never would have stayed.

  A lovely cottage situated in a quiet village.

  The garden has a patio with chairs and table and looks over rolling fields. It is like the Tardis - does not look large from the outside but very spacious inside with all rooms having plenty of space. Rosemary, the owner, had left local organic milk and eggs as well as cake as a welcome and lives next door in case of any problems, but we had none. She popped round on our 2nd day to welcome us and gave recommendations for places to visit and eateries, which are also given in the welcome letter. The property was nicely presented and clean, comfortable beds and chairs and the shower in the wet room was excellent. In all a lovely and quirky property and we would recommend it as a great place to stay to explore the area. There are washing and bedding facilities for 4 legged friends, but not required by us, as we have no pets. Thank you for a lovely stay, despite the weather not behaving itself towards the end of our week.

  Lovely comfortable cosy cottage surrounded by beautiful countryside.

  They have also planted the garden area with wildlife friendly plants. Great place to relax and unwind away from the hustle and bustle. We enjoyed spotting the hares in the fields on the drive up to the farm, watching the free range hens wandering around & bird spotting from the French doors in the kitchen. Sarah and husband were very welcoming and all communications we had were answered quickly. There is a lot to see in this area we particularly enjoyed Nunnington hall & Sutton bank visitor centre. Had a fabulous Sunday lunch at The Plough Inn Wombleton. Unfortunately didn’t sample many other restaurants in the area as we couldn’t get a table. So we would pre book a little more next time we come up this way. Overall a lovely holiday.

  The property was lovely, clean and had everything you needed to make your stay comfortable.

  They left games, umbrellas, torches, all stuff we’d forgot and used, little things that made a difference. Wet room shower was fantastic, the property was warm and having an en-suite bedroom also was a great bonus, as we took my mum with us. It’s also in a beautiful location with a great pub/food a two minute walk away. My only negative, and this isn’t about Hen cottage, it’s a Sykes thing, is the 10am check out, my elderly mum struggles early in a morning, so we ended up going home the the afternoon before, We have left both cottages we’ve stayed at absolutely spotless, and feel an extra hour at least would be beneficial. Would highly recommend the Hen cottage though, and would happily stay there again.
