What our customers say about their holidays

  • Susan - Verified booking

The chalet is sweet and could be made so much better.

The furniture is all odd and could be arranged better and may be decluttered. The kitchen is tidy and has been tidied up. I took my air fryer and used that 99% of the time apart from the kettle, toaster and microwave. Lots of mugs but you need to pick through as some don’t look like they have been washed too well. The bathroom is great and the shower works perfectly. The main bedroom the bed is a small double and it is very soft and low. It has bedside cabinets which are add but does the job. There is a big built in wardrobe that has the Emerson tank and the main electric switch. Now, this is where I found a problem and also in the 2nd bedroom. There is no electrical sockets at all in the bedrooms. So no charging of phones or iwatches or even a bedside lamp. I like to read but the big ceiling light to read with isn’t very cosy and relaxing. The second bedroom, no sockets and this was a pain with kids and their iPads in the evenings. Again, no where to plug in night lights. I really think money needs to be spent to get sockets put into these rooms. The cleaning does seem to be done. However, the mop that was left should we need to use it or at the end of the stay I like to clean, well the mop was disgusting and I wouldn’t and didn’t use it. I have taken a picture but not sure I can upload it. The chalet cost over £600 for a week and I do think some money should be spent on the property to bring it up to more modern times with the use of devices. Now, WIFI !!!! This is provided by the caravan park and not the owners of the chalets. It is Meant to be 5g WiFi. The signal is really poor. You have to keep putting in the code as it drops out so easily. It cost over £8 for 7 days and you can only use one code per device. So we had 4 iPhones. 2 iPads and this was a real pain. The kids will play games on the iPad in the evening but like to FaceTime their friends and play and talk about the game and help each other. We had some rain so in the evenings when cooking etc having showers etc it was good for the kids to have their devices but I got fed up of the moaning about wifi. The site facilities wasn’t at all pleasing either. The restaurant/bar closed Sunday afternoon and didn’t open until Thursday. There was a swimming pool, that was meant to heated but I am unsure how it is heated as on the really sunny day we did have I was told it was very cold to get in. There isn’t a shop on site. So make sure if you are going in the evening like we did you take milk, bread etc. otherwise it is a drive to the nearest village to get to the co-op before it closed. We did have fun as we went out most days. But home from home it wasn’t. It could be really cosy and an ideal base for exploring. It just needs some work and if allowed I would get my own wifi installed and maybe a smart tv etc.

The cottage has positives and negatives. On the plus side, then the view across to Barmouth is one of the best we have experienced from a holiday cottage - and we have been to many. Our party of 10 from 3 generations ranges in age from 5 to 70, so we are looking for space, facilities, cleanliness and comfort. The living and bedroom arrangements were just as described and met all our requirements. Pots and pans in the kitchen were of perfect size for large group cooking. We had a great holiday. Having said that, there were a number of disappointments that we would not expect, especially given the price bracket for this property, and our comments should be taken with that in mind. Firstly, although only renovated a couple of years ago, many aspects of the house are already looking tired, as though little time and effort has been spent on upkeep. Some shower fittings and cubicles needed attention. A blind was completely missing on one bedroom window, and in the kitchen area the curtains would not meet in the middle. On arrival, the house appeared only to have had a speedy cleanup since the previous guests and really it is in need of a deep clean, which would remove the mould around some of the showers, windows, walls, etc. We should mention we found hairs in one shower - not acceptable. In general there is unwanted clutter in certain areas of the house which would benefit from tidying up and/or removing. The TV seen in the photos in the small living area was missing. More seriously, we were very surprised on our first day to find that someone appeared to be living in a summer house/studio at the bottom of the 'garden', visible from the main property. This was just not on, as we were expecting the privacy intimated in the website description and photos. Indeed, it appeared that decking was being added outside the summer house (we had to move our car from what we thought was our own private area to enable a van to deliver wood) and this work continued for several days. We have young children and an anxious dog in our party, and were not expecting that other unknown people would be sharing the 'garden' with us. Nor that the master bedroom could be viewed by such people from outside without the curtains pulled, when we expected to be looking out onto open uninhabited hillside. We don't know what is going on here but we should have been notified of this change. We cannot comment on using the sauna, although beware that it is through a gate downhill and across a field and to us did not look inviting. It would have been more sensible to have it closer to the house or provide a games room. The house has considerable potential should the owner attend to it. Nevertheless our holiday was enjoyable overall but we are unlikely to return here.

We had a brilliant stay here in February for a 40th birthday celebration, with several kids ranging from 4 to 7. The house itself is fantastic, loads of space, homely, and very well kept. We loved playing board games by the fire, or coming home from wet walks to a log-fired sauna and wild swim in the lake. The kitchen had everything we needed for the week, even the ability to make our own bread each morning, which was brilliant. The view from the master bedroom (and sauna) was incredible and it really felt like we were at the edge of the world. It really is very remote, and the 6 gates that had to be opened and closed to get in and out of civilisation initially felt like a chore, but actually the kids had great fun jumping out and doing it for us, so it wasn’t too much of an issue, except our Tesco delivery driver didn’t make it and we had to venture out at 10pm to meet him at Dolgellau, but all part of the adventure really. The Co-op in town is pretty well stocked anyway so we picked up some extras from there through the week. For those who are considering it.. one of our group tried the steeper route in to save on the gate opening and said “never again”, so we gave that a miss. We did the walk down to Barmouth twice, it was steep and at times slippery but even our 4 year old made it so not all that bad (though she is the toddler equivalent to the Hardest Geezer). It was worth it for a look around the town, a stop at the local brewery for a couple of flights, a play on the beach, milkshakes at a cafe, and venturing up into the hills behind to get some great vistas over the bay. In good weather I’d highly recommend a walk around Cregennan lakes, just beautiful. Harlech castle and beach were also a real highlight, but there are tonnes of good walks and things to do in the area to keep people occupied of all ages. The owner Paul was friendly and posted a few bits that we left behind back for us, thanks for that. The only criticism I could make is that the mattress in the master bedroom is very soft, so for me as a front sleeper gave me pretty restless nights, the one in the room at the other end of the house was far better for me but I put up with it. Also the downstairs room was definitely the coldest, we had no complaints from those who stayed in it but it was noticeably a few degrees colder than the rest of the house so worth thinking about how it could be evened out. We’re considering a return with another group of friends another year, and I don’t think we’ve ever been back to the same place twice, so that says something abut it. A memorable week with great company in a beautiful location. Couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you so much for having us!

    No proper provision for clothing.

No Wardrobes or adequate drawers, no hangers for the rail fixed to the wall which we assume was for our clothes. We do not expect to have to live out of a suitcase. No oven dishes, no dishes for microwave, which we found very limiting. Lighting in the lounge area is insufficient. Heating was not set for our stay - we had to read the manual to turn it on. The Hot water was totally inadequate, pressure was very low except in the bath. We had to keep turning the BOOST button for a supply of hot water. No instructions were available for the setting of the controller. Instructions for the wifi were "See Router," which was securely fastened to the wall, the password etc. was on the back of the router which was very difficult to take off the wall. We did discover a card with the password etc. in a drawer later. The washbasin in the bathroom was much too small to be practical, and adequate only for washing your hands and cleaning teeth. The window in the Bunkbed room would not close. A child could lean against it whilst climbing the ladder and the window being insecure would open and the child fall out. As well as a security issue. The garden is definitely NOT safe for children there being an unfenced, almost sheer drop to the river below at the rear of the cabin.. Whilst this is mentioned in the information pack clients should be made aware of this before booking. Also mentioned in the info pack is a warning about the ramp. However this does require immediate attention as one of our party fell foul of the drop and the sharp edge gashing the leg. The travel directions supplied were totally lacking. We spoke to your agent who agreed, and said she would contact the owner and call back with fuller directions. No return call! The website has a link to Google Maps, which if followed leads to to the wrong road altogether. I note that Sykes have added a What Three Words to the directions on line. Had I not spent considerable time using OS Maps and Google maps, we could have found ourselves at a total loss. Whilst it is obvious that the cabin is in process of being renovated, we are of the opinion (judging against other properties we have stayed in from Sykes) the hire price is much too high. It is also worth mentioning in the cabin information the the cabin lies in the MACH LOOP, and extremely low and loud jets fly directly overhead, which at times causes the cabn to shake!

We (which includes my two adult daughters and dog) arrived about 9pm on the Friday evening when it was just dropping dark.

The instructions for access were clear and when we went in to the Chalet, it was so warm and cosy and so welcoming. The Chalet was clean with everything you need for a week away. It is one of 6 down a private lane. Beth sent me a pin drop and the instructions made finding it easy. The location is perfect. It is a short walk into Dinas Mawddwy where the pub serves really nice food and the local cafe is really cute with good cakes. Both are really dog friendly. It is not far to the town to stock up and Barmouth is only half an hour if you want to go to the beach. I drove up with friends and walked Rhinog Fawr and then my daughters and I did Snowdon. Fabulous days!! We had mixed weather so we were able to sit outside on the new bench and soak up the peace and the view over a glass of wine or a cuppa. The garden is enclosed which made it really relaxing with the dog but the Chalet is most definitely on the MACH loop which we loved but our sound sensitive dog wasn’t too impressed. The MACH loop is definitely worth a visit. We timed it perfectly. So cool. We explored a little bit locally but unfortunately didn’t do any proper local walks. Next time! Beth answered all of my questions before we went and was very nice and friendly so we got a relaxed and lovely warm feeling even before we arrived. As a family we needed a break, some quality time together and some time out from life which is exactly what we got on our holiday to Wales. Thank you Beth. I would definitely recommend and would like to come back to explore some more. Kindest regards, The Lake Ladies x
