What our customers say about their holidays
Lynsey - Verified booking
Cardean Mill is a beautiful holiday cottage surrounded by lovely scenery.
Did we enjoy our stay? Yes when it came to spending time with the family. Would we return? Probably not. I would rather leave a very honest account of our stay as I think there were some aspects of it I wouldâve liked to have known prior to booking. First and foremost, know that the owners live on the grounds too. The only thing separating the two properties is the old mill. Donât get me wrong, Steve (the owner) was very welcoming and happy to answer any questions we had however, itâs a shared driveway so when they had guests over at night and we were sitting outside the front, you felt like you were on display plus when I collected the washing off the washing line they were all sitting in their conservatory which looks onto the washing line so again, you feel all eyes on you. When it comes to washing, yes there is a washing machine but there is no tumble dryer - I understand this as electricity is through the roof, but when you have six peoples clothes to dry on just one small clothes horse it can be frustrating. We were lucky that there were days the weather was kind so if you are visiting in the winter bear this in mind. The WiFi was very weak. We had four teenagers with us so Iâm sure you can imagine the frustration. Yes, we werenât there to be on phones/tablets but in the evening if we wanted to watch a movie (the dvd selection is quite dated) we had to use my sons PlayStation to log onto Netflix, however the connection would buffer a lot. The couches/chairs in the living room we found very uncomfortable so with the combination of WiFi and uncomfortable couches we spent every evening playing Uno which we do love to do so itâs not a bad thing, again I would just rather leave an honest review. The first morning we had a power cut. Living very rural ourselves we are prone to these so it was something we could get on with (although itâs awful when you are gasping for a cuppa!) but my husband had to go to the owners a couple of times (the first time no answer) to find out when we could expect it back on (they had been informed by Scottish power) so we wouldâve thought they would come let us know. Steve did pop round when it came back on to check all was ok. The pub, which they say is less than a mile away only does food on a Friday and Saturday, not every night. The cottage overall was clean, but there were an awful lot of cobwebs and spiders that look like daddy long legs. My daughter is terrified of spiders so that gave her the heebie-jeebies! The kitchen window and velux on the landing were particularly bad as well as the wicker hearts hanging in rooms. My husband loves a bath, this is how he relaxes so he was ecstatic when he saw the rolltop bathtub in the main bathroom. We had two nights before said teenagers arrived so he wanted to make full use of the bathtub. Unfortunately it does not fill all the way with hot water as the water runs cold a quarter of the way up and that is without any showers being had that same day. Needless to say he was disappointed and didnât bother trying again. The âoutside play areaâ is literally a slide, a swing and hanging rope. Not âslidesâ and âswingsâ as quoted in the description. The gazebo is also still in the pictures but not in the garden. The scenery is beautiful. The walk through the garden is lovely and our dog was loving life. The house itself was ok, plenty of room for all of us so that was good. As I said the scenery was beautiful and the house looks stunning from the outside and is fine on the inside. Everybody looks for different things from their holiday. We did have a lovely time away, I just feel for the price we paid we expected more.

We were blessed with very good weather making Bannatyne Lodge even more enjoyable.
It's very airy and the lounge is very comfortable. Enclosed, private garden at the back, morning sunshine front and back, but plenty of shade can be found at the back in the afternoon. You can be straight out of the gate and onto a number of paths, ideal for dog walking. Or, you are on the western outskirts of the Sidlaw Hills and with Pitlochry and Braemar being just over an hour's drive away you are in a good location for more serious hill walking. Newtyle itself, a small, quiet friendly village, small well stocked post office / general shop ( bigger supermarkets, 20 minutes drive away), award winning butchers ( Piries, 'World Champion' pies and sausages!) and small, clean, friendly pub, The Commercial with good 'join in' acoustic music sessions, Wednesday nights. Andrea and Peter, owners of the Lodge, very friendly, considerate, helpful but very respectful too of your privacy. Our thanks to them. Overall, Bannatyne Lodge a wonderful place to stay for a quiet, relaxed holiday on the outskirts of a village which is a great place for easier local walks but with easy access to coast and mountain.

The cottage is situated in a very charming and remote part of the village which ensures that you feel completely immersed in the countryside and local walks are literally a stones throw from the cottage.
There are some lovely touches within the cottage making it feel homely as well as cosy, we did indulge in the wood burning stove which was a favourite of ours. Taking into consideration the current Covid-19 situation our host was very careful to ensure everything was done at a distance and they were not intrusive at all, despite being only at the end of the driveway if we did need them. Considering current climes we did find the lack of a fridge freezer, or indeed a stand alone freezer slightly limiting in that we needed to do a shop everyday as we were not able to dine out in the local area, equally as we did all our cooking for the week in the cottage the hob was rather dated and without markings, rather confusing to work, however, the oven was super. A few minor updates to the kitchen would make this a 10 out of 10 for us. We could not fault anything else, even the sun shone most of the week!

We were disappointed with certain aspects, it advised a Bbq ,non, iron and ironing board, non, the house smelt of dogs ,I am allergic to dust, you could literally right your name in the dust in certain areas, around the fireplace, s.
The wood burner had not been cleaned it was filthy, we did not use. The kitchen was clean, along with the bathrooms and bedrooms. The living room was very cold, the furniture was uncared for and covered in dog hair. The tv was to small for the room, had to strain to see. This property has potential but does not deserve the premium price tag, If offering supply, in good working order clean and loved. There is an epidemic which requires a high standard of cleanliness, this didn't reach every day standards. I would re think your star rating on this property. The area is beautiful, wonderful walks and outdoor pursuits, but these could be had at any accommodation in the area. No control of the heating, and some cold evenings.

Andrea and Peter couldnât of been kinder to us, this has been by far the nicest cottage we have stayed at.
Yet. The cottage was set in the most beautiful part of Angus. The cottage was huge, well equipped with such lovely touches of eggs delivered to us and left on our door step. Freshly cut flowers in the house, beautiful large bath, comfy beds and a large enclosed garden for our dog to spend ages sniffing around as there was a mature garden with lots of trees, just beautiful! A beautiful log burner with complimentary logs was put on in July in Scotland but I think that was more out of decadence and sheer luxury but made for a very special evening. We all so enjoyed our weeks holiday at this beautiful holiday home and cannot recommend it highly enough, thank you so much!
