  Although the location was fantastic for visiting the local area we do not feel the property lives up to the 5 star status. Although quirky and has beautiful original features there is a few basics lacking which we would have expected from a 5 star property. The maintenance is poor as plumbing leaked and stair rails were wobbly which is far from ideal for a spiral staircase. There is also a lack of toiletries - only hand soap is provided and only 1 toilet roll per toilet. The addition of the spa is a lovely touch however water pressure is slow and it took at least 20 minutes to fill the jacuzzi to the appropriate level each time it was used. Also it is worth bearing in mind that access is poor as the gate to the property is extremely narrow so mirrors have to be pulled in with only inches to spare. The water in the lane is also inconvenient and the advert does not fully justify how quickly the water rises on a rainy day and the anxiety caused about getting out. Due to the access issues we decided to use public transport during our stay which was fantastic for getting around to different places in the locality. A visit to the local butchers Jacksons is also a must as their produce, especially the pies is excellent!!

  The cottage is in a good position relative to the beach and the few shops and the pub.

  It’s warm and comfortable with a plentiful supply of logs for the stove. The cottage is small , more suitable for one or two people. Wi-Fi and mobile reception were excellent throughout the week I stayed. The kitchen is very small but has most things you would need. However there is no freezer or freezer compartment/ice box, just a fridge. There’s also no microwave. There’s a lovely shower room (no bath) with underfloor heating. Note that if you’re looking for the washing machine it’s in the shower room under the sink in the cupboard. As noted with other reviews parking is a challenge. There is no parking at the cottage itself. The cottage could benefit from curtains or blinds at the lounge window to offer some privacy as it is easy to see in from the outside. I slept well despite the the two storms that hit the are. The main bedroom is nice and comfortable. There’s a second smaller bedroom with bunk beds. To the front of the cottage is a small enclosed garden, there’s a useful hosepipe for washing down dogs and boot cleaning. Overall I enjoyed my stay.

  Loved our week stay at Stonewall!

  Great location close to beach, Hart Inn, Fish Cottage and Mary’s - our first stay here even though we know the area well. Wood supplied for fire, kitchen compact but well equipped and listing does say no microwave. The towel radiator does work on the boost as described but never gets hot so bathroom in February was a little chilly. Rest of the house toasty, comfortable and we felt at home. Slightly lower score for cleanliness for 2 reasons. Looked for plugs in main bedroom for hair dryer and they are behind the drawers so difficult to access unless I missed easier ones and it’s been a good while since it was cleaned there. There were no bins to be found externally so difficult to follow the recycle request. I did manage to meet the bin man who waited while I took the bags to his bin lorry. This is picky as we loved our stay so just raising awareness. We walked miles and always love our visits to Sandsend and would re book. (Thank you for the hosepipe and shoe rack which helped us to keep the dog clean and house tidy!) Previous reviews mention welcome cake… ?

  The ground floor apartment was clean and comfortable and the furnishings were good quality.

  It is also dog friendly. It had everything that one needs. The underfloor heating was efficient and the sensor lights in the hall and bathroom were a good idea and energy efficient. There were just a couple of steps down to the front door and a large lobby/hallway before entering the apartment. The location was great. Not necessary to use the car to see Whitby. Very central for walking down to pubs and the co-op foodstore, the train station, harbour and sea front. The walk back is uphill but it is just the last 30 ft that is steep. We found parking quite challenging as the streets are narrow and finding a space can sometimes be difficult and it is not possible to always park outside the property. We successfully managed to get a space near the property and we have a Kia Sorrento. Larger cars may have a problem. It is very quiet at night and we would recommend the apartment and area. We had a lovely time and would not hesitate in booking again.

  We were unable to use the jacuzzi as it was flooding the spa room, which was a big disappointment and something we were looking forward to using. We had to use the lovely towels to mop up all the water. We called maintenance and we told someone would come and resolve it but no one came. Everything else was beautiful, rooms were gorgeous and decor was lovely. The kitchen was abit disjointed from the other main living area and as the one doing all the cooking I was away from everyone else in tha party alot. We understand that this was due to the configuration of such an old building. There were little touches for my brothers 60th and the welcome basket and sweets were super. We loved the fact features were kept from the time it was a Chapel. We enjoyed our stay and the locality and would definitely book again and hopefully be able to relax in the jacuzzi.
