What our customers say about their holidays
Lynn - Verified booking
As a family we have holidayed in crail since covid and have stayed in 4 other holiday homes, all of similar price points.
This was the poorest to date and I would not recommend. On a positive note, the kitchen looks to have undergone a refurbishment and was well presented. The kettle didn't turn itself off after boiling, am not sure if thus was meant to be the case? The living room has nice sofas and other furntiture, however the TV remote still has a switch for VCR which gives away the age. A basic SMART TV costs 150 pounds, another key down, especially for my children, who don't get to watch TV often, but when they do like to have programmes to choose from. The shower was hot and powerful. The beds were comfortable. Now the negatives, the heating can't be altered and at night the house can be cold. I don't ask my young son to wear a housecoat to bed at home, and don't think I should have to on holiday. With standing the shower, the bathroom was poor. The extractor fan has about 2 inches of dust on the outer casing, which no doubt impacts on it's functionality, as there is black mould on the ceiling. The inside lining of the drawers were dirty. Finally, the outside of the cubicle also needs cleaned. The cottage was marketed on having views to the sea, this was greatly impeded from over grown bushes and with weeds / wildflowers growing through the decking. Moreover, I actually had to brush the decking before letting my toddler out to play. In regards to upstairs there is a complete lack of storage and many of our clothes remained in suitcases, which were placed with difficulty under bed in main bedroom, due to owners personal effects also being storedunder there. On our last morning I used the iron, which was also poor, but noticed the safety testing was out of date. Having a quick look at other electrical items, this was not a one off and I noticed the extension cable behind the TV and the freestanding lamp in the living room didn't appear to have undergone safety checks. I am utterly appalled at this completely lack of basic health and safety. To say I am extremely disappointed is an understatement. Had I noticed the lack of basic health and safety checks noted above, we would have left the cottage and requested a refund. I would be grateful if someone from your company could call me in regards to the issues I have raised.

Rosalind and Brian were absolutely perfect hosts along with the one and only Bob the dog .
The welcome pack of coffee ,milk, home made jam , eggs from their own hens etc was most welcome . Thank you hens for laying them . The cottage is a perfect gem . If you like a rural location this is utterly the right place for you to stay . Walks around the cottage area are stunning . Take walking shoes / boots .The views are utterly incredible . Wildlife in abundance to be seen ( or heard re the Owls in our case !) The Katmoget sheep are entertaining to watch . The enclosed private garden is wonderful. We were very lucky with the weather during our stay. Lovely to be able to dry the washing outside on the line . Itâs only a short drive down the road to Cupar to all the shops ,restaurants etc. Fisher and Donaldâs fudge doughnuts or coffee tower are a must every time we visit the area and discovered there is a shop in Cupar . The Greenhouse Bar and Grillâs Sunday lunch is highly recommended- phone and book and reserve your roast though . The information re places to visit in the area , recommendations for other places to eat is all in the cottage . Itâs easy to travel and explore the coast . We will most certainly be returning at the earliest opportunity.

We had a very peaceful but active holiday in this centrally based cottage.
Visited Hill of Tarvit Mansion; St Monanâs along to Crail with fish and chips in Anstruther; train trip from Cupar to Dundee to visit V&A (excellent free photography exhibition) and the McManus Museum; Falkland Palace; Wemyss Pottery in nearby Ceres (leaving with 2 smiling Rose Cabbage cats and a mouse!); walked up the steep but satisfying Hill of Tarvit on our last day and were rewarded with panoramic views of the coast and surrounding countryside; had an Indian takeaway from Saffron on Bonnygate Cupar (we phoned then picked it up) - very tasty and weâd recommend it. Rosalind welcomed us on arrival and had provided a DVD player at our request along with providing a cafetiere so we could use our filter coffee - she went beyond her role and was so friendly and accommodating and obviously wishing us to have a trouble free holiday - her eggs (from her hens) and jam were delicious. We will recommend the cottage to our friends as an excellent base to visit many areas of Fife easily.

Another wonderful stay at the Hill of Tarvit.
We were pleased to see lovely new sofas and WiFi this time. The garden was well kept and it was great to go and buy some fruit and veg from the newly installed larder on the estate. The cottage was cosy and relaxing as ever. The only downside was no hand wash in the toilet, which would have been nice as other National Trust cottages do this as standard, along with some welcoming dog treats, poo bags and food. Also, the ironing board cover is the same one as five years ago and itâs very thin, so when any clothes are ironed, the diamond metal pattern transfers onto clothes. These are, however, minor details and we all had a fantastic stay. The staff at Hill of Tarvit are very friendly and are always happy to help. It was great visiting our usual beaches and walks at Tentsmuir and St. Andrewâs as well as Culross Palace, up to see the Selkies and an absolutely delicious meal at the Dory restaurant in Pittenweem. We will hopefully be back again next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday to East Cottage.
This is the third time weâve been and it is always clean, tidy and very relaxing. Itâs also a great base to visit the rest of Fife. The facilities were great-the oven, tv and shower are easy to use and the cottage was very cosy and comfortable. The only downside was a note on Thursday about a PAT test on the plugs and all the electrical equipment on Friday. We werenât given a time either, so we felt we needed to be out of the cottage as our dog is very nervous of strangers. We got up early on our last full day as we didnât want to be in our pyjamas when they arrived. The PAT tester arrived at the adjacent cottage around 10am and was there for over an hour, by which time we had left for the day. However, it made us feel like we had to be out and really this should have been booked for the Saturday morning changeover. We had paid an awful lot of money for a week and felt like we couldnât be in the property.
