What our customers say about their holidays

Beautiful entrance to the castle grounds with great parking at the cottage.
On arrival the cottage was lovely and warm and very welcoming. 2 good size bedrooms and a big bathroom, nice bedding, with plenty of towels. The living area is all in one which is really convenient, the kitchen is well stocked, meaning you have everything you need to cook with plenty of glasses, crockery and cutlery. In the sitting room area of the living quarter there are 2 sofas that are very comfortable and a good size smart tv. Outside is an enclosed yard which is perfect if you have a dog. The hot tub is lovely, sitting at about 40° and very clean. A couple of improvements could be made, but please don't let this put you off. A curtain across the front door would not only make it warmer but if you have the lights on, walking through the hallway at night you feel a little exposed as there is just nets over the large glass front door. A new bath panel and a little silicone would improve the bathroom which is lovely and the lights in the mirror unit need looking at. The top of the hot tub needs a bar to assist with the removal and closing as it is heavy. It's not for everyone but personally a TV in each of the bedrooms would be a great improvement. The above are little improvements in an otherwise beautiful cottage, with lovely grounds to walk around, that we will 100% be booking again. As a side note, I spoke to multiple members of staff while on site and everyone was extremely helpful and friendly, credit to the staff.

Beautiful location, perfect spot for quiet and privacy.
Lots of places within easy reach so a perfect base. Lots to like, beautiful living room and main bedroom, hot tub fabulous, the treats for Molly dog were much appreciated by her and the goodies for the humans were gratefully received too, however unfortunately there are areas that need attention to make it the luxury lodge it is described as. Kitchen equipment is very basic, struggled with no colander dor example, settee extremely uncomfortable cushion seating doesnt stay put, extra cushions for comfort would be nice. Extractor doesn't work in the bathroom, larger towels that wrap around you and nicer quality would be appreciated along with more comfortable bedding, the quilt in bedroom 2 didn't feel very nice and the bedding felt worn. It is annoying that there are no lights than can be switched off without getting out of bed in room 2, it is tight on space which is pointed out in description but there are things that could be done. The filter on the hot tub is damaged and loose. The outdoor area is in need of a good clean, I cleaned the table so we could use. I tried to hoover but it didn't work properly and smelled awful so had to do my best with dustpan and brush! I dont feel it should be expected to strip the beds and it's not pleasant to find a stain on the mattress cover which wasn't from me! The park is maintained to a very high standard and very clean.

Just spent a fabulous week at Bilberry Nook over Christmas.
It was so relaxing and peaceful and we thoroughly enjoyed getting away from the usual hectic festivities. When we arrived the cottage was warm comfortable and much more spacious than we expected. There was a xmas tree and even xmas presents and a card, nice touch. It was dark and cold so we lit the fire and just settled in. The next morning in the light of day we got our first proper view of the amazing garden and beautiful surroundings! The weather was kind to us for December so we spent the week going for walks in the stunning countryside of Weardale. Afternoons relaxing in the hot tub and watching all the wildlife in the garden we spotted at least 17 different varieties of bird in the garden and on the river including heron, woodpecker and not forgetting the resident peacock and 2 pea hens that came at dusk every evening to be fed! We cooked most evenings (including xmas dinner) in the very well equipped kitchen. Slept very soundly as it was so dark and quiet! Jo was a lovely owner, helpful and friendly, she was also the artist behind all the wildlife pictures in the cottage that are for sale. We bought one as a xmas present for ourselves. All in all the perfect place to get away from it all reset and recharge. We would love to return in the summer and spend more time in the garden in the longer days also stargaze in the very dark night sky.

The lodge was absolutely lovely, comfortable and very clean.
We were looking for peace and tranquility, which we definetly found here. The bed was very comfortable and the hot tub and views great. A few things which could be looked at, but probably none that would stop us booking again. One issue which really need looking into is the fridge, it is quite noisy during night ( which kept me awake) and the ice box was so full of ice we couldn't get anything in it. The outside seats really need varnishing, they're not a very welcoming first impression. There are no cooking utensils eg: spatula or scissors etc. and only two sideplates. Two of the coffee mugs are so badly marked inside, they need replacing. I really hope these issues will be dealt with, especially the fridge. It would really help to enhance a stay. We took our frying pan, as a review said the one provided was too small, unfortunately the pans don't work, the hob only comes on when the heavy pans provided are used. We took our Cosori which cooks most things as we knew there was no oven. A full length mirror on the back of bathroom door or wardrobe door would be a bonus. I like to be honest in reviews and feel sure Syke cottages would want to know of any concerns so they can be rectified.

Just back from a 4 night break at Bilberry Nook Cottage.
The location is perfect. At the side of the weir and onto the river. The weather was cold but dry which allowed us to sit outside and just listen to the water and the birds. Great to relax and recharge your batteries. The peacocks don't seem to be bothered by humans so be prepared for visitors when you are sat outside! Plus squirrels, ducks, the cat - we didn't get to see the kingfisher. The hot tub is a huge plus and was well used. Lovely and warm and kept in great condition and checked every day.. The cottage is well equipped, warm, comfortable and a home from home. We slept extremely well in the double bed and after searching for a new mattress for quite some time we will be ordering one of these. Jo and Stephen are great hosts, friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble. They are onsite and on hand for any queries and questions but other than that you don't see them. Lots of walks from the doorstep if you want them. The pub is just down the road. Currently only open Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Everyone you meet in the village is friendly. We had a lovely time and really do hope to come back soon.
