What our customers say about their holidays

  • Marion - Verified booking

First of all, the correspondence we had with the Sykes staff was exceptional; all of the representatives got back to us very quickly and answered all of our questions and set things up very well.

The Cottage owners were so kind to come to a nearby hotel to lead us to the cottage which was hidden away a bit. They were so delightful, leaving us treats and a fireplace stocked with peat. The Cottage is so welcoming! My sister and I travel often together and this is by far one of the best places we've ever stayed, in any country. Completely quiet and secluded, fields full of livestock, blackberries to pick, and many, many miles of greenway biking trails and hiking trails right out the front door, some of which lead well up into the hills where the views over the water and islands are stunning in the changing light. Achill Island just 25 min away. We used the cottage as a base to explore Mayo and northern Connemara. The Jordans made themselves available for any questions and problems we might have had--but didn't. We were at such peace that we never turned on the radio or listened to the terrible news all around the world, and so could really and fully recharge from work stresses as we searched for the resident hares and pheasants in the fields. We cooked most of our meals and easily popped over to Newport 3 mi away to check emails and get supplies. The butcher shops in Newport have really excellent meats, and the grocery store has pretty much anything else you might need. Several choices of meals at the Newport pubs and restaurants and hotels, too. River's Edge Cafe a few miles away also has excellent food. Wonderful music and food in nearby Mulranny as well. No end of things to do and see! We can't recommend this place and the experience more highly--just wonderful.

Thank you for your latest email where you attached a copy of a previous email "AS EVIDENCE" and pointing out that i did not reply to your email dated 3rd Oct.

That particular email stated that you confirmed that you had brought the case to a close. As the case was closed, I fail to comprehend why you thought I needed to reply to closed case. After the case was closed, you sent me another email asking about my holiday. I DID NOT HAVE A HOILIDAY. You also stated that you had spoken to the owner. The owner phoned me several days after I informed you of the circumstances of not having our holiday when you said you would inform the owner when the real truth is you did not, but I did. Throughout this whole event, Sykes has never shown any compassion, consideration or made an apology for your insensitive continued and repeated emails asking me if we had a good holiday and Sykes hopes the holiday was very enjoyable and would I like to review our holiday when you know full well that I was taken seriously ill and we could not continue with our holiday. You have continued to rub salt in the would and cause offense by sending me these repeated emails. No apologies, no personal compassion and no understanding of the situation. A simple apology would have gone a long way to smooth this situation. Your customer care needs reviewing. Regards Bruce Ashton.

The house was in very good and clean condition. It was very nicely decorated from top to bottom. The beds were a bit hard, but that's bearable for a few days. What was not so nice: hot water and heating were not separated from each other. In most heating systems, the valves could not be rotated either, so that the heating ran when hot water was being prepared. This could only be compensated for by opening doors and windows. Not very economically. Nevertheless, I can draw a rather good conclusion for the house for me.

Yes make your customers aware that the price of the cottage may change ie it may go up or down.

I presumed what I saw when I booked was your final price ie you have low, mid & high season pricing. I booked the cottage in March 2021 and then the price dropped by nearly £200 for June. Every time I have tried to call it takes over 30mins to answer the phone, this is very poor customer service. There is no email on your website either, when I finally did get to speak to someone re your pricing he did give me an email address to send my complaint on. I'VE STILL NOT HEARD BACK, again very poor service. I then try again to notify you that we had 2 people coming to the cottage but as there's no option to update online, you have to call. I gave up after waiting 40mins on the phone, there is obviously a problem with your communication service. The cottage was lovely and the owners were very helpful. I look forward to your response. This was a bucket-list checkmark for me.

We loved the experience of staying in a thatched-roof cottage with a wood-burning stove for heat. It was a bit more rugged than we anticipated due to the modern central heating system having become inoperable the day before our stay. However, we were given the option of finding other accommodations but decided to make a go of it. There was ample wood to keep the fire burning but you have to be willing to get up and tend the fire a couple of times during the night. I also was reminded that people weren’t as tall when homes were built this way. If you’re over 5’ 10” be sure to duck when going through doorways or up on the upstairs landing. Sonia was a great host and we’d stay here again. Be sure to take a left out the driveway and visit proprietors Tony and Fiona for a pint at the Fox’s Den Pub, 2 miles down.
