What our customers say about their holidays

  • Steve - Verified booking

My husband and I have just spent two fabulous weeks staying in 'The Schooner' on the Mizen Peninsula and what a wonderful holiday it was!

The cottage is spacious, light and airy, with fantastic views overlooking the sea and even the Fastnet Lighthouse from our bedroom window! The raised decking with comfortable outdoor furniture, was a great place to sit with a glass of wine and appreciate this view, even in October but if the weather got a little too cold (or wet) there is a sun room that shares the same view. The cottage has extensive, private grounds, making it a quiet 'get-away-from-it-all' holiday without being isolated, as the Mizen village of Goleen is only a ten minute walk away (most of this through the owners' property and then along nice, quiet country lanes) where there is a butcher's shop, Post Office, General Food Store, Tourist Information, several pubs and the very fine restaurant, The Heron's Cove. 'The Schooner' has a well-equipped, large kitchen with plenty of cutlery, crockery, pots and pans and has a well-stocked towel cupboard, so no shortage of fresh towels. The large, bright sitting room with a wood-burning stove, was a great place to get settled at night and this room has a long table with benches, which would be ideal for playing board games as a family. There is also a cozy sitting room off the kitchen, which has large comfy sofas and a coal fire. In the bedroom there was ample cupboard and wardrobe space and our bed and pillows were very comfy and we were offered fresh linen at the end of our first week. We found the cottage to be very warm and toasty, even on quite chilly days. The central heating heats the house quickly and when turned off, the house retains the heat very well. The bathroom downstairs has a bath and shower and the shower has a powerful jet. The upstairs bathroom has a bath and twin basins and a large well-lit mirror, which we found an added bonus, as the bathroom lighting in most holiday cottages is quite poor. We found 'The Schooner' a gem of a cottage to stay in, not only because of its situation and the fact that it is a beautiful cottage to relax and unwind in but also because of Brian, who was there to greet us, show us around the cottage and explain things to us and was full of interesting information about the Mizen and South West Cork but also because he went out of his way to help us with any queries we had during our stay and was ever so helpful and very friendly. All round, 'The Schooner' is a winner!

It's a lovely big house, and has great potential - a little more attention to detail and cleanliness could make it more appealing.

The kitchen layout and space is great - although as a party of 6 adults, we were glad that we brought some extra pots / dishes /scissors / whisk, etc. It is off the road, with a locked gate and long driveway, not overlooked, so very private, quiet and secure. The rooms are all of a very generous size, with plenty of space for different activities. Nice view of a nearby lake from the front of the house too - and the stars on a clear night are amazing! However, the listing is a little misleading - it states the following: "Four bedrooms: 3 x double with en-suite shower, basin and WC, 1 x double" When we arrived, we realised that the house does not have three ensuite bedrooms - there is one double with ensuite, then there are two bedrooms that SHARE an ensuite. The fourth bedroom is as listed - it uses the family bathroom across the hall. However the light in the family bathroom was broken, and the small stick-on lights that had been attached to the wall gave only a small amount of light at night. Two of the bedrooms did not have wardrobes, so nowhere to hang clothes, the wash-hand basin in the shared ensuite kept blocking up (when we fixed this, we found that the plug /stopper was broken, and pieces had fallen down the plug hole). The windows were quite dirty, and some of the sheets could have been washed better, and in some parts of the kitchen the counter tops were a bit sticky. The owner was quick to respond to any of our queries, and arranged for her Dad to pop in to turn up the heating for us (it's underfloor heating throughout the house). There are very nice walks within driving distance, and it is practically next door to the Castle Saunderson Demesne (though we would still advise driving to this, as the road outside the house does not have a footpath). It is a great location as a base to visit the Cavan area.

    Everything was just brilliant.

Cottage was amazing, spotlessly clean, so spacious and everything you could possibly need and more is provided. Loads of wee extras that you dont normally get when renting (soap powder/dish water tablets/condiments etc) Although the cottage is big, when the fire is on the whole place feels so homely and cosy. There's great views from most if not all windows, we could've spent all day watching the waves crashing over the rocks. The bedrooms are massive with loads of storage, 2 have ensuite facilities and there's extra blankets/quilts if you need them (we didnt) The pub (O'Donaghues), just a short walk away, is superb, the owner and staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent and I'd highly recommend the fish n chips and the crab claws, both were outstanding . Had the best night having a small libation or three with the locals, great craic as they say in Ireland! Genuinely cant recommend this Cottage highly enough. Fanore itself is very small, but beautiful, beach is stunning with loads of surfers using it, but plenty free parking. I'd also recommend visiting nearby 'Doolin' and looking for 'Dusty' the Dolphin! If considering renting this Cottage, go for it. I cant think of any negatives and wouldnt want to. For me it was just perfect

Pros: Property in a beautiful location, clean and kitchen very well equipped.

Cons: Despite being advertised as including all utilities, heating was rationed and fully controlled by the owners daughter (timer locked away) which was extremely frustrating as I could not set it to my convenience, this meant having to wait to shower until I could get warm enough to do so. First night I was absolutely frozen and had to go to bed at 8.15pm to get warm. Morning was freezing and had to wait until 10.15am (when owners daughter arrived to set the heating again) before I could shower, this meant I couldn't get out until later in the day when I usually go out around 8am. I couldn't get the fire going (never started a fire before) but was told to do that instead. Owner initially told me she had to lock the timer away because it kept getting broken by renters, but daughter told me the truth - her mother doesn't like the heating on for long because the oil is expensive. Sofa is rather uncomfortable Needs a coffee table badly Overall a lovely property but I wouldn't stay there again for the sheer fact the the owner controlling the heating, something I've never experienced before in many of the other properties I've stayed it.

We were very happy with this property and would definitely stay again, the location, the comfort, the peace and quiet and the facilities made for a lovely holiday.

The house is quirky being on 3 levels but I like the way it has all mod cons and still retains the cottage feel. The key box was easy to access but i miss the personal touch of meeting the owner or even getting a call to make sure everything was ok. Access is a bit tight and parking is tricky if you have more than one car. I would strongly recommend giving the grounds some attention the grass was cut but having nettles and brambles encroaching on the shrubs and ivy on the paths and on the decking really takes from the over all experience and your beautiful view is also being blocked to some extent by the overgrowth also the terracotta pots are very neglected. Inside if you dont like windows with no blinds or curtains please be aware that there are at least 7 in this house.Lastly just for added safety I think there should be handles to hold onto in the showers. thanks for a great week looking forward to staying again and I hope you will take my recommendations on board.
