Rock Cottage is generally praised for its cleanliness, cosy atmosphere, and suitability as a base to explore the Lake District. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen and the inclusion of a utility room. The location is quiet and accessible by vehicle, with some local amenities a short drive away. The cottage is dog-friendly, which is a bonus for pet owners.
Most guests found the cottage clean, with provided towels and bed linen. However, some noted a dog smell and minor cleanliness issues like dust and spiderwebs. The presence of dog faeces on the patio was mentioned once.
The cottage is appreciated for its quiet location, suitable for exploring the Lake District with Kendal and Bowness nearby. Some guests noted the lack of local amenities within walking distance and the necessity of having a vehicle.
Guests found the beds comfortable and the cottage cosy, though some mentioned it could be warmer and better lit. The layout with toilets on different levels was not ideal for everyone.
The cottage is well-equipped with kitchenware and a utility room. However, guests noted the need for maintenance, such as filling dents and holes, and some found the lack of basics like dishwasher tablets and bin liners inconvenient.
While guests mentioned the lack of basic necessities like washing up liquid and toilet paper, there were no references to gifts or welcome packs, so it is not possible to score thoughtfulness in this context.

Rock Cottage sits on the village green in the heart of rural Crosthwaite, a sleepy location in the heart of the Lyth Valley, which was recently noted by ’Lonely Planet’ as one of the most beautiful places on Earth. A mere five miles from both Bowness to the north and the medieval market town of Kendal to the east, Rock Cottage proves a great base for exploring the local area either by car, on foot or by bike.
The Lyth Valley is renowned for its damsons. In April, the hedgerows and orchards are awash with white blossom, ready for the annual Damson Day, where products such as damson gin and jams, made from the previous year’s harvest, are sold.
Mid terraced, Rock Cottage has all the ingredients you would expect from a countryside cottage including exposed beams and a warming wood burning stove. Set out across three floors, the cottage is well equipped for a self catering break with modern facilities and when the chef wants a night off, there’s an award winning pub within a 10-minute stroll. There is a patio to the rear with BBQ facilities and a seated area. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant in village.

Rock Cottage is in a fantastic location especially for star gazing. Close to Kendal and Bowness. I have been to many cottages and this is the first without at least a bottle of milk as a welcome pack. To advertise a wood burner and have no wood, matches or kindling, is a first. To have to call the owners to have the heating turned up is also odd but not a first. Maybe it's a summer destination for the future.

Wonderful location, once you find the place, although you can't really see the views from most of the windows. Convenient for trips out. Peaceful. Perfectly adequate, private dog-friendly accommodation. Washing machine, microwave, television. Log burner (we didn't use it).Quibbles (and that's all they are, to be honest): No dvd player (I carted a load of dvds up there as there was meant to be one). Intermittently weak wifi though my mobile Vodafone signal was great up there). Only one small dustbin outside. An immersion heater heats water for the sinks (a notice urges you not to leave it on). Notices remind you there is a septic tank and to only flush strictly necessary items down the loos. Electric night storage heaters meant it wasn't particularly warm. The allocated parking place is very small. Perpetual climbing of steep stairs necessitated as toilets are not on the ground floor level (one upstairs, one in the basement). Low energy bulbs meant it wasn't particularly well-lit. I would say best suited for energetic walking /fell-running types. Definitely not for little children, the disabled or frail/elderly people.
