Set all on one level, the Grade II listed Stable at Longhoughton Hall dates back to the 18th century and has been sympathetically converted into a charming cottage, set in its own area of the gardens of the Hall. Built from the local, golden Northumbrian stone this pretty abode showcases the original roof timbers. Large windows in the lounge area, replacing the original stable entrance gates for farm horses in the past, create a light and airy living space with a log burner ensuring cosy evenings.

Longhoughton is a pretty, little coastal village, just 4 miles east of the famous, historic market town of Alnwick which offers a wide array of amenities including a cinema/playhouse, restaurants, independent shops, a variety of pubs and eateries. Home to the Duke of Northumberland and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, Alnwick Castle is a popular visitor attraction and only a gentle stroll from the town centre. Don’t forget to visit the Alnwick Gardens; a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including a grand cascade waterfall and ’poison’ garden. A great day out for all the family and you can dine in the largest tree house restaurant in Europe.

Once you’re ready to begin your Northumbrian adventure, firstly head to the hidden bay at Sugar Sands – an idyllic beach with views across to Dunstanburgh Castle, sited mid-way on the beautiful 20-mile stretch of Heritage coastline designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Readily accessible by public transport, this characterful cottage is only 4 miles from Alnmouth and the ever-popular village of Warkworth with its dominant castle, or head north and sample the world-famous kippers of Craster with the nearby walk to the iconic Dunstanburgh Castle, and beyond that, the iconic Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island.

Staying at this cottage was an absolute delight. From the moment you step inside, you’re wrapped in a sense of warmth and comfort — helped along beautifully by the cosy log burner and the indulgent underfloor heating that makes even winter mornings feel luxurious. The attention to detail is exceptional throughout. Everything feels thoughtfully chosen, from the high‑quality finishes to the surprisingly lovely wine glasses that made evenings in feel just as special as nights out.Its location is another standout. Being just a short stroll from the beach adds a real sense of escape, whether you’re heading out for a sunrise walk or a windswept afternoon wander.A truly charming, well‑designed retreat that balances comfort, style, and coastal calm. I’d return in a heartbeat.

Our hosts, Katie and Jim, couldn't have been more friendly and helpful during our recent visit and provided some welcome quality treats, bread and milk. The Stable, within the grounds of the Hall, is very well equipped and extremely clean and has one of the comfiest beds we've experienced over many years of holidaying. Peaceful and quiet but so close to local amenities. If you like coastal walks and miles of sandy beaches away from it all then The Stable is within easy travel distance of Boulmer, Craster, Embleton and Bamburgh. For those willing to get back in the car there are lots of historical places and gardens to visit both near and a little further away, within easy travelling time. Overall, we just loved it.

We had a brilliant week exploring Northumberland and The Stable made the perfect base as its close to many attractions and the coast. The property had everything we needed, was clean and very comfortable – the window seat is a lovely spot to enjoy a book. Katie made us feel very welcome and we’d happily come back again.
