The garden is steep and has steps.. This charming detached holiday cottage dates back to the 1600s, and is set in the heart of the Peak District village of Bonsall. The property has been carefully furnished and co-ordinated throughout with a well-equipped kitchen, although guests may want to take advantage of some of the great places to eat including the two traditional village pubs within walking distance or in Cromford and Matlock just a short drive away. Take a step out to the rear garden, which boasts three tiers, and enjoy the wonderful views. There is also a summer house and patio area, which is perfect for guests who want to enjoy a spot of alfresco dining in the sunshine.
The traditional conservation village of Bonsall is situated in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, on the edge of the Peak District National Park, 4 miles from Matlock. Named in the Domesday Book, with a history dating back to Roman times, this former lead mining and textile producing village is renowned for the World Hen Racing Championship’s held on the first Saturday in August.
This part of Derbyshire has a rich heritage, with nearby Cromford being home to Arkwright Mills and Crich, playing host to Crich Tramway Village. Matlock Bath is just a short drive away and is the base for the cable car leading to the Heights of Abraham, a 60-acre hilltop country park. Walkers and mountain bikers will delight in the magnificent trails that abound in this part of the Peak District, whilst watersport enthusiasts are well-served by Carsington Water, which is just 7 miles away. Excellent accomodation and situation. Parking available on site and in the adjacent road. We visited in late November and enjoyed Christmas at Chatsworth taking in the stunning festive displays in the House and the Christmas market within the grounds. Also took to the high life and used the cable car to view the 'Lights of Abraham' Christmas decorations. The cottage is perfectly placed to reach many attractions in the area.

Superb in every way. Friendly helpful host, spacious yet cozy cottage and spotlesly clean. Everything was provided for a comfortable stay, would love to visit again in the summer months to enjoy the beautiful garden and better weather for cycling. Would highly recommend a stay in Poppy Cottage if you are wanting to stay in this locality. Lovely local pub the Barley Mow (take a torch if walking there in the dark as no street lights for part of the 10 minute walk) and Fountain Tea Rooms are lovely for lunch/tea and cake.

We had a great stay at Poppy Cottage. It’s situated in a lovely village with a pub at the top of the street and a cafe at the bottom, there is a small play area in the village with a football pitch which the kids enjoyed and there are lots of walks to do too. We were mainly visiting Matlock so this was the perfect location. The house is lovely and cosy, we arrived in a storm and it was nice to arrive to a warm house and having the option of the log burner too. The garden is lovely, yes it is steep but the owners are clear on this in the description, we didn’t get to use it much as it was November and very wet while we were there, the kids did love exploring the various layers and I can imagine it’s lovely to sit out in the summer. There was plenty of space in the cottage and it was well equipped with everything we needed for a family of 4 and a big newfoundland dog, there is off road parking for one car too. The host is lovely and was in contact to make sure we had arrived safely with the weather being bad on the day of arrival and then kept us informed during our stay of road diversions due to trees being down in the area. We would definitely stay there again.
