Reasons to Holiday in Bournemouth

Beaches

Bournemouth Beach is a seven-mile stretch of sand that has been one of Britain's favourite beaches since Victorian times. The beach has a host of water sports, ranging from fishing and sailing to jet skiing, surfing, and water skiing. There is a 300-metre pier complete with amusement arcade, rock climbing, and even ziplining. The beach has excellent facilities with showers, toilets, cafes and lifeguards, all at regular intervals. Bournemouth Beach has been the town's main attraction for over a century, and it doesn't look like that will change. Activities

Narrowing down the best things about Bournemouth is tricky because there are so many options. If you're with friends, this seaside resort town does not disappoint when it comes to nightlife, with bars, pubs and clubs lasting well into the morning, with the O2 Academy taking centre stage. If you are with your family, everyone can enjoy a day's activities with art galleries, an Oceanarium, and museums such as the Bournemouth Natural Science Museum or Science Zone. The pier and the fairground behind it are great fun for the kids, with traditional rides and games as well as relaxing on the Bournemouth Observation Wheel. Where to Stay in Bournemouth

Places to Visit Near Bournemouth

Lyme Regis is a town on the Jurassic Coast, dubbed the “Pearl of Dorset,” it lies in the Dorset AONB.

Swanage is a coastal town with a golden beach, water sports, restaurants, pubs, and a castle.

Corfe Castle is a 1000-year-old castle that still stands tall today and looks over a quaint village.

Mudeford is only a short drive from Bournemouth and offers a long stretch of beach and water sports.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bournemouth

Q. How popular for holidays is Bournemouth compared to other places in Dorset?

A: Bournemouth is a popular holiday spot for obvious reasons, but it isn't as popular with Last Minute Cottages bookers as Swanage, Weymouth and Dorchester.

Q. What is the average price for a holiday cottage in Bournemouth?

A: Our recent booking data tells us that on average people pay £46 per person per a night to stay in Bournemouth. Though we offer properties at a range of price points and costs do vary at different times of the year.

Q. Is Bournemouth a popular place for family holidays?

A: The long, sandy beach is always a big draw for families but our booking data suggests more family-orientated breaks happen in places like Weymouth, Swanage and Bridport, while couples and grown-up groups are better suited to make the most of the nightlife in a larger town like Bournemouth.

Q. Is Bournemouth a good place to take your dog on holiday?

A: Although you will find plenty to see and do with your four-legged friend in Bouremouth is it less popular than other places like Lyme Regis and Bridport for those who pack their pooch.

Q. When should I book to get the best deal on a holiday cottage in Bournemouth?

A: Last Minute Cottages customers tend to book their stay in Bournemouth a whole two months before they come to stay. So in order to increase your chances of getting a great mix of choice and price, we would recommend booking before that if you can.

What our customers say about their holidays

The publicity photograph was misleading, the house didn’t have kerb appeal.

But on opening the front door , it was “wow”. So, a lovely property inside. Clean, modern, well-equipped. A sweet little patio outside. Conveniently placed for the town centre. A property that would suit younger couples rather than those of us in our later years. No blinds or curtains downstairs, so no privacy one darkness arrives. Sykes gave us confusing information about accessing the property via the key box. In an earlier email you quoted one code number and then in the final message you gave us another one. That was the number we had kept in our phone and it didn’t work on the box we first tried. We then found the second box at ground level, which accessing it was quite a challenge for an 80 year-old. Rather off putting! And then we were disappointed that the television set was not equipped to receive the terrestrial TV channels. In the welcome folder at the property there was information about linking our own device to the TV set but we didn’t have any kit with us to make that possible. Luckily we did have an iPad with us so we could watch the programmes we wanted to see. This information should have been included in the property details on the Sykes website. Most disappointing. Finally, we noted that a significant amount of the crockery was chipped and that previous guests had placed glasses on the coffee table leaving water marks. Not quite top quality considering that it was a newly built property.

We absolutely loved our stay at West Ridge.

What an incredibly beautiful house and gardens, it was a real privilege to be in. The house has such a lovely energy, we really got the feeling that it has been loved and appreciated, which made it so easy to feel at home there, whilst appreciating the beauty and history all around you. There are so many toys available for children which was really appreciated, ours only ended up playing with a handful of them, but there are games for all ages which is great for rainy days. The bathroom upstairs is huge, super clean, modern and practical for kids, making bath time nicer than any holiday we've been on. The whole house was spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable with good quality white sheets. West Ridge is a short walk from the beach east of Boscombe, which is absolutely stunning and much less crowded than Bournemouth beach, and there are ice creams, toilets and water which is perfect for long days on the beach. It is also an easy drive to Christchurch and Mudeford Quay, and really close to Southbourne. We had an absolutely brilliant week at West Ridge, with many wonderful memories to cherish. We will definitely try to stay here again if we return to Bournemouth. Thank you for such a lovely stay.

The house and garden were fantastic and it's position close to the beach and the cliff top pathway is ideal.

There's a lot to do and Bournemouth has so much to offer and is very well looked after and we had a great week. Our only slight disappointment was the lack of thought that seemed to have gone into providing for holidaymakers. In many similar properties you are provided with a booklet of information about how to operate equipment etc - using the cooker was far from straightforward, details of local shops, supermarkets, facilities, restaurants, takeaways, places to visit, what to do etc. Also, some of the basic things, like salt and pepper for example, weren't provided and it was odd having many of the most accessible cupboards in the kitchen locked. The bin in the kitchen was woefully inadequate for such a large property. Having lots of very nice ornaments on show does help to enhance the general ambience of the property but if you have young children it can be a source of anxiety. Some warning of all the locked rooms and cupboards would also have been polite we feel. Rather than a holiday home, it felt a bit like a private house that we were intruding upon. With a little bit more thought it could easily have been a 5 star rating.

A lovely old cottage, perfect for walkers. Close to footpaths to Swanage and Durlston, an excellent local shop, Indian restaurant and a fish & chip shop. Bus stop only 5 mins walk away. The cottage has a tiny courtyard garden which is pleasant to sit in, although is shady for much of the day. Definitely not for less mobile people - the steep, narrow, curving staircase is a challenge. Beware the low beam at the entrance of the stairs - it caught me out twice! The lounge is very dark - lights needed switching on during daylight hours. I imagine it would be cosy in the winter - the logburner would soon warm the place up. The main bedroom is large and light. Comfortable bed and plenty of storage. The single bedroom is cosy. The bathroom has a bath with handheld shower - this is fine however there is no shower curtain so we found it easier to sit in the bath to hair wash. It's a good 20-25 mins walk into the town and the beach - a little longer on the return as there are some uphill slopes. Overall, it is an ideal and comfortable place to stay, especially for people who enjoy walking.

This is a good property with outstanding features.

The house is ideally located being just a short walk to Boscombe beach as well as an easy walk, or short drive, into both Boscombe and Bournemouth. There is good, easily accessible, off road parking. The rooms are spacious, with tasteful period furnishings and extremely comfortable beds. Each of the three bedrooms has good storage space, although the master bedroom would benefit from having bedside tables. There is just one bathroom available, however, this was not a problem for a party of five adults, particularly as there are wash-basins in two of the bedrooms. Having USB charging sockets on most of the power socket points is a real bonus. The quiet, well-maintained garden is outstanding to sit-in at any time of the day. All rooms were cleaned and maintained to a high standard. Whilst the kitchen is very well-equipped, this coupled with too many locked cupboards, resulted in there being very little free space to store food items. It's a property that we highly recommend and hope to return to in future.
