About this property

Hawes 0.5 miles. A lovely, stone-built semi-detached, 18th century cottage, located in the centre of the small hamlet of Gayle, on the outskirts of Hawes. This superb Wensleydale cottage is a real delight with many of the original features of the cottage, including the old beams, exposed stonework, little nooks and crannies, retained during the renovation. The cottage is unusual, set out over three floors with a wonderful mix of modern styling seamlessly combined with the old character of this typical Dales cottage. On entering the cottage, guests will be immediately met with a cosy sitting room with old ceiling beams, a stone fireplace with warming woodburning stove and a delightful dining area set by the window. Snuggle up by the fire on a dark winter’s night and enjoy your favourite tipple and a good book. A lovely oak kitchen and utility area complete the ground floor accommodation. The first floor main bedroom is cosy and stylish, with original sash windows and wooden flooring, whilst the single room provides flexible sleeping arrangements. A modern bathroom with separate shower and bath is located on the second floor, adding further unusual charm to this delightful holiday home. Outside, there is a courtyard with furniture, an ideal place to converse with the passing locals, and the storage area provides an excellent lock-up for bikes and outdoor equipment after busy days amongst the beautiful Dales countryside. The hamlet of Gayle is famous for Gayle Mill, which is thought to be the oldest structurally unaltered cotton mill in existence, with this cottage having links to the mill due to the fact that it was formally owned by the Anderson family, who were the last owners of the mill before it was renovated. Nearby Hawes is a popular holiday destination with a wide range of amenities including shops, pubs and tea rooms and the not-to-be-missed Wensleydale Creamery, which is just a short stroll from the doorstep. With great walks from the doorstep, this is an ideal cottage for that long-awaited break in the country and a perfect place for a romantic getaway.

Hawes is a popular market town in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire and is regarded as one of the honeypot tourist attractions of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Take a walk around the Hawes Town Trail, Millennium Walk, Pennine Way or along the River Ure, which is nearby. Traditional shops, cafés and inns now cater for a variety of Dales visitors as well as the local community.

It was well equipped with plenty of storage and ideal for our needs. The owner was also very helpful.

Difficult access for parking needs to be highlighted in the general description, not after a booking has been made. Not a cottage for people who would find steep stairs diffficult.

In a great location and a very cosy property with everything you need for a short break in the Dales. Warm fire, lots of cooking equipment, and clean throughout! Only point of improvement I would like to suggest is to renew the towels. Mine was marked / dirty and when I came out the shower to dry myself, a silver fish ran out of the towel and down me. So the owner may wish to consider treating the place for silver fish too. Otherwise, no complaints!
