The historic market town of Richmond, England, is perched on a hilltop just to the north of the River Swale, marking the beginning of Swaledale. Over nine centuries of activity are preserved in the city's cobblestone streets and small alleys, known as wynds. The name Richmond comes from the French phrase for "strong hill" (Riche-mont), and the town built up around its castle, a Norman bastion dating back to 1071 and famously located high above the river.
