The historic market town of Richmond, England, is perched on a hilltop just to the north of the River Swale, marking the beginning of Swaledale. Over nine centuries of activity are preserved in the city's cobblestone streets and small alleys, known as wynds. The name Richmond comes from the French phrase for "strong hill" (Riche-mont), and the town built up around its castle, a Norman bastion dating back to 1071 and famously located high above the river. Wonderful walks can be taken today, such as the Castle Walk, a magnificent terrace walk beneath the castle walls, or a stroll along the River Swale, which features parks, secure paddling spots, and little waterfalls. Narrow lanes and alleyways branch out from the cobbled Market Place, where weekly markets and monthly farmers' markets can be found, and the town is filled with stores, taverns, and restaurants. Many of the town's historic alleys are lined with graceful examples of Georgian architecture, a testament to its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries. Regular visitors enjoy shows all year long at the Georgian Theatre, one of the oldest theatres in the country.
