Within easy reach is some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside to explore on foot, bicycle, horseback or car. The country’s oldest holiday resort, Scarborough, with its twin bays dominated by the castle boasts all the traditional seaside treats. Visit the Theatre In The Round where Alan Ayckbourn plays receive their world premiers, or the unique Open Air Theatre for the latest big music acts. The Alpamare Water Park is always a firm favourite. Further down the coast is the traditional fishing town of Filey, sheltered by the brigg and Flamborough Headland, with its world renowned bird sanctuary. Continue on to Bridlington, a seaside resort without hills. Heading north from your cottage is the route to the old Scarborough to Whitby railway offering some sensational vistas as it bypasses quiet coastal villages clinging to the cliffs.
Whitby is the home of Captain James Cook and Dracula, and is packed with all manner of history about the famous residents. Jet jewellery and smoked kippers are famous exports but make sure to also visit the enchanting ruined abbey, accessible via 199 steps. Inland excursions take you to the Roman Road at Wheeldale and Goathland, commonly known as Aidensfield. Catch the steam train through Heartbeat Country from Pickering or Grosmont, or explore stately homes such as Castle Howard and Sledmere. Travel east to Thirsk and the Yorkshire Dales, made famous by James Herriot, stopping off in Kilburn to see Mousey Thompson’s famous wood carving workshop and the villages giant white horse. Closer to hand is the romantic forge valley, guarded by Ayton Castle and the Dalby Forest.
