About this property

A warm welcome return TO OUR portfolio, with availability from late summer 2025

This luxury apartment on the edge of the small rural village of Crossmichael, close to Castle Douglas, has been lovingly converted from an old mill building to provide spacious accommodation over two floors. The principal accommodation is on the first floor including a spacious living area with wood burner and Juliet window overlooking the mill burn and adjoining woodland.

Great care has been taken over the conversion of the building to ensure that the original character of the mill is retained whilst providing a superb living environment. Crossmichael village is just a short walk from the property and offers a small inn serving meals and a village shop. The busy rural market town of Castle Douglas is less than a ten minute drive away, offering a wide range of amenities. These include a range of interesting independent shops, art galleries, a community run theatre which doubles as a cinema, cafes, restaurants & pubs, a swimming pool, a 9-hole golf course, and a small independent brewery.

Loch Ken lies to the back of the village with excellent bird watching opportunities, the loch also has many water sports available including free fishing on parts. The nearby Galloway Activity Centre provides both water and land based activities for all ages including sailing, canoeing and paddle boarding.

The Galloway Forest and Solway Coast are easily reached with their wonderful wildlife, scenery, peace and tranquillity. The forest also has excellent provision for active pursuits with the 7Stanes Mountain Bike Network offering routes for all levels of ability. The Galloway Forest was designated Britain's first dark Sky Park and on a clear night, due to the low levels of light pollution the star gazing opportunities are unsurpassed.

If you want to explore the local culture and history of the area you are spoilt for choice with local sites such as Threave Estate with its Castle and gardens, Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey and a short drive away the Robert Burns Trail to Ayr or visit one of his favourite hostelries at the Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kirkcudbright or his farm at Ellisland near Dumfries.

Waterfall is a perfect holiday retreat in a lovely part of Scotland. The accommodation is outstanding - beautiful, clean and quiet, and everything one could possibly need is provided, including the best Welcome Pack we have ever encountered. In the local area, there are numerous walks along the coast and inland, lovely roads for cycling, and also forests for mountain biking (the bike storage at Waterfall is excellent). There are also many good cafes in the nearby towns. We definitely hope to revisit Waterfall in the future.

We really needed a perfectly chilled and relaxed time surrounded by trees, water and a little bit of sun and Waterfall was the most perfect location for that getaway. Waterfall Cottage is absolutely stunning with a gorgeous view from the living room windows that open wide. Exceeded usual expectations: very clean, everything thought of, very dog friendly, comfortable and spacious. The extras included; a dram, cakes, milk, were a lovely touch and made us feel incredibly welcome. It was the perfect home away from home for us to explore the area visiting Sandyhills Beach, Caerlaverock Castle and Dalbeattie Forest which has three fantastic trails for dog walking.

What a fantastic property to stay in! The massive lounge and view of the waterfall and countryside at the rear was breathtaking! This has to be the best barn/building conversion we have ever stayed in! The hosts (Anna and Eric) pulled all the stops out with the welcome basket (overflowing with treats!) and to top it all was the offer of a wee dram (or drams!) of delightful whisky! Never have we been so well spoilt! The local countryside is so beautiful and unspoilt and the area was tranquil with hardly any traffic. The firepit/patio area is so well thought out with an excellent view. There is so much to do in the area as well.
