We’re just back from a week at The Cheese Loft and have honestly had one of our best holidays in Scotland! Location for us was ideal, we needed to unplug and decompress, however you should note the cottage is a few miles drive from the nearest shop, which doesn’t have much in terms of supplies, so you will need to arrive with everything you need or do a run to Stranraer as we did for a big shop. The fridge is really small with a tiny freezer compartment, so bear that in mind for how much you’re bringing. All of that said, for us, this place was perfect. The cottage is gorgeous, really nicely done and has pretty much everything you need. The views are breathtaking and being surrounded by cows and sheep and tractors was fun! We had a week of sun and sat outside everyday, just enjoying the peace or sounds of the farm.We went out and about each day and visited some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen! This part of the world is quiet, unspoilt and in my view perfect. If you want amenities and shops etc this isn’t for you. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a real break and get away from it all. We loved it! Oh and our four legged child loved it too! The cottage is super dog friendly and needless to say the location is perfect for walkies!

On our arrival we were met by the hosts with a very warm welcome, who showed us around this beautifully appointed cottage. It is very clean and very well equipped with everything needed to ‘hole up’ for the duration of our stay. The lovely kitchen has a good amount of storage space, a dishwasher, gas hob and electric oven. There is a fridge with a small freezer compartment; we noted there is no milk shelf, but this wasn’t an issue for us.There is a good sized dining table plus a large sofa and armchair for relaxing. There is a downstairs loo and a large entry for coats, shoes and leads. The bathroom upstairs is great and adjoins the large bedroom that has a very comfortable bed, a large wardrobe area and plenty of drawer space for clothes. There is an enclosed garden which was great for our dog’s needs morning and night and a separate area for outdoor seating. The countryside and coastal walks are stunning. The paths and walks are best done in daylight however the road to the Cheese Loft is good for a last dog walk before bed. Be prepared for the cattle as this next to a working farm; if your dog has issues, it is best to be prepared. We found out our dog really doesn’t like cows, and they follow you along the hedge line if walking adjacent to their field/s as well as meeting you at the gate every morning! We saw deer and hares daily around the cottage. The Ardwell Ponds is a great walk (about a mile) through a wooded area and private gardens; beware of midges as there are plenty around the ponds, and they sure do bite! We visited the Lighthouse of Galloway which was a good few hours outing. We really liked Sandhead beach which goes on for miles, and the smaller Port Logan beach; these are both sandy as opposed to shale and stone like some of the other local beaches. We visited the Forest of Galloway which has amazing woodland walks for those with varying physical abilities, stunning views, waterfalls, and points of interest. We drove through Raiders Road where there are some great stops such as Otters pond. We were so lucky to see a golden eagle and red kites. The cafe at the Glentrool visitors centre is superb and staff are so friendly. Beware of midges here too, we became their lunch; we found it best to sit inside where dogs are welcome.Take what food and drink you need for your stay at the Cheese Loft as the main shops are in Stranraer; the shop in Drummore only having the essentials; although to be fair it isn’t too arduous to drive back to Stranraer for supplies.A great place we highly recommend for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

When driving up to the cottage we don’t think it was going to be good, but inside was very nice and accommodating. Friendly, and Gracious hosts. Very Helpful even offered us food when we checked in. The cottage is Very Remote. You do need to make sure you have your groceries when you get there…. At least what you need for the night and morning.
