Penlon cottage is a well-received holiday rental, praised for its cleanliness, beautiful and peaceful location, and well-equipped facilities. Guests appreciate the comfortable setting, the proximity to nature and walks, and the responsiveness of the owners. While some minor issues are mentioned, the overall sentiment is highly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.
The cottage is consistently described as very clean and tidy, with multiple reviews highlighting its cleanliness. This suggests a high standard of hygiene and care.
The location is frequently praised for its beauty, tranquillity, and proximity to nature, including bird watching and walks. However, some concerns about fast traffic and the lack of a garden are noted.
Comfort is generally well-regarded, with the cottage described as cosy and warm. Some guests mention issues with bed comfort and the steepness of stairs, which slightly affects the score.
Facilities are considered excellent, especially the well-equipped kitchen. Maintenance issues like condensation and a woodburner door are mentioned, but these are minor compared to the overall positive feedback.
There is no mention of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the owners, so it is not possible to provide a score in this category.
Capel Bangor 2 miles. A beautifully converted, Grade II listed former miner’s cottage, with views across the River Rheidol up towards the wooded valley, near the village of Capel Bangor. Just a short drive from Aberystwyth, a popular university town with a striking Victorian promenade, pier and funicular railway, the cottage is a perfect base for small families or couples to enjoy both the valleys and beaches of West Wales. The cottage is set over two floors, with a landing-style attic room housing twin beds and a bunk room on the ground floor, along with a shower room. The original cottage boasts a spacious dining room and a well-equipped galley kitchen, and the sitting room is stylish and modern, with a welcoming woodburner and lovely views stretching up the hillside, a perfect spot to sit and enjoy a morning cup of tea.
Outside, you can sit on the patio and enjoy the tranquillity of the area, lulled by the babble of the river. Alternatively, take your drink over to the river paddock and sit with a picnic by the owners’ stretch of fishing river, as you while away the hours in the sunshine. The area is criss-crossed with beautiful walks and is perfect for cycling, and six and a half miles away is Bwlch Nant yr Arian on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, where hundreds of majestic red kites feed daily. The area offers various outdoor activities, such as fishing and wildlife spotting, while a myriad of cycle ways and footpaths provide the opportunity to glimpse the area’s industrial history, with steam trains, funicular railways and dams. You are also close to the Wales Coastal Path, stretching in both directions from Aberystwyth. Steeped in legend, the mystical Devil’s Bridge Falls is just a six-mile drive, or you can take the fabulous Rheidol Steam Railway from Aberystwyth, from a stop just a short walk from the cottage.
Penlon is a peaceful valley retreat for groups to enjoy the tranquil riverside, local beaches and diverse countryside of West Wales.

A wealth of attractions are designed to entertain and inspire visitors to explore further afield. The scenic 20-mile cycle route and footpath on the Ystwyth Trail follows a wonderful woodland and river path and links Aberystwyth to Tregaron. With a son at the Uni it was a great base to pop over to Aberystwyth to see him. Lots to see and do in the town, as well as more locally with great walks from the cottage. The cottage is cosy, but enough room for 4 of us, very well kitted out with everything we needed for a home from home. Enjoyed the log burner on the cold February evenings! The owner was very helpful in sorting out a minor issue which arose with the boiler, quickly giving us instructions on how to reset it. Beautiful cottage, very peaceful location, stunning scenery, a lovely relaxing time away.

Excellent facilities within the cottage. Parking available right outside the property. The only downside were the stairs were rather steep for anyone with limited mobility however there are adult bunk beds on the ground floor.

We enjoyed our stay and the location was fantastic. The cottage was beautifully presented, and the jigsaw puzzle was a challenge. However, the woodburner door was not sealing properly, and there was a loose nut or bolt on the handle which needed tightening during use. This felt unsafe and would benefit from a permanent fix. We also noticed that there was no frontâdoor key, which meant there was only one escape route through the lounge area. The recycling instructions were unclear, and the bins at the rear of the property were broken, which made disposing of waste difficult. Finally, the Freesat box did not work reliably and needed resetting each time we tried to use it.
