About this property

Resting about a mile away from the small village of Bettws Newydd in Monmouthshire, within the grounds of a rural country house, is this charming ground floor residence, recently converted from the old coachhouse stables.

The Old Stables of coachhouse at Trostrey Lodge gives a unique location in this demi country paradise for two people for anyone wanting to walk miles along the River Usk, up the nearby hills such as the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf or the highest, Pen-Y-Fan

You can visit five local castles: Skenfrith, Grosmont, Raglan, White Castle and Usk castle, we would also recommend the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) for anyone walking.

Leave your vehicle along the main drive of Trostrey Lodge before going round the corner of the coachhouse to the stone fronted home and into the open plan living space.

There is up to the minute cooking on the electric oven, gas hob or microwave in the attractive kitchen with table, chairs, sofa and television.

During warmer weather there is a gravel and flagstone patio surrounded by a pretty cottage garden and rustic seating. The Usk Valley Footpath goes past, through the fields beyond.

The Old Stables are quiet, leafy and only the sound of the weir and birdsong.

In the evening a sumptuous comfortable double bed awaits. Excellent lighting for bedtime reading. The shower room is right opposite with a double size shower.

Get acquainted with your sublime surroundings. All footpaths are clearly marked along the river or climb up to the Clytha Folly, or even further into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), or just on the canal at Goytre Wharf.

Parking is under cover and adjacent. Two great pubs close by, each one is a mile distant: Black Bear excellent cuisine and Clytha Arms award winning cider and beer. NGS gardens is wonderful to visit or just enjoy the natural farm landscape of sheep in the fields and ancient oak trees.

Raglan is four miles away for provisions and Abergavenny is a charming market town with well known art shop and gallery also with sophisticated, inspired eating. So there is nothing much else needed to make your Welsh stay fantastic.

Kemeys Commander is a small community in the county of Monmouthshire in South East Wales. The River Usk runs through the village, providing tranquil walks, and the majestic Church of St Aeddan, Bettws Newydd, is just beyond the village. The Chainbridge Riverside Inn, with its gorgeous setting, and Craft Renaissance Farm shop & kitchen, with its steaming coffee and fresh food, are two dining options. The 15th century Raglan Castle, the Usk Rural Life Museum for a pleasant learning experience, and Woodlake Park Golf Club to put your swing to the test are all within easy reach.

Because it wouldn't have held a candle to our glorious time at The Old Stables. The gracious, charming and witty hostess couldn't help us enough. The accommodation sports a cosy and supremely comfortable bed; the kitchen is well appointed and has everything you need to cook any meal--plus the basic condiments, cutlery and even fresh rosemary and quince jelly. The setting is sublime--peaceful, with only the sound of the nearby river Usk coursing by, an ancient forest, a carpet of copper beech leaves, two affectionate ponies in the pasture. lots of hyperbole here? Only because it's well-deserved. The Old Stables offer anything a body could want for a wonderful restorative break. Looking forward to a return.

We had everything we needed. The owner and her assistant were most helpful. It is set in a very quiet area. The only noise we had was from the occupants in the place above. From the Monday when they were in residence they clumped across the floor and could be heard especially in the bedroom. Whoever was in the apartment earlier was so quiet, it made quite a contrast. Everything from the cutlery to the toilet paper was of high quality.

Immediately on arrival we knew we’d found a gem. The space is furnished with a style adding to the authenticity of the building and was modern, clean and fresh on arrival. The bed was comfortable and the linen nice. Fantastic large shower with plenty of hot water. We loved the outdoor garden seating in the late afternoon sun. Located on the Usk River trail we had wonderful access to nature and the countryside and nearby villages. We appreciated the eggs and milk left for us and the local suggestions of places to visit. We had a memorable stay.
