What our customers say about their holidays

I should point out that we had to leave a day early due to an emergency back at home and therefore didn't have time to clean the property, we left it as tidy as possible in the circumstances.
This review was written before we had to leave. Blue Skies Cottage Pros Views Quiet Recliners Washing machine Dining/living room, spacious and comfortable Thermostat - godsend on cold mornings Welcome basket Cons Kitchen Under equipped Not enough small sharp knives and utensils, whisk, potato masher, more cooking spoons etc Not enough baking trays, that said, I can bake a cake but not a casserole Saucepans much too small, shallow and too lightweight for projected sleeps 5 Bin too small for self catering kitchen Don't look down the side or too closely at the cooker, its not pleasant. Bathroom Shower very very narrow for bigger bums and for those with mobility issues, no safe way of exiting the shower, hurt my legs so much I ended up having strip washes instead. Family Bedroom Needs blinds or nets otherwise with a teenager the curtains stay closed 24/7 Needs a wardrobe rather than a sofa and coffee tables, as there is not a large amount of storage space and no hanging space Master bedroom Walk in to 3 wardrobes but two are full of high chairs, cots, etc so nowhere really to store cases etc Hanging space in largest wardrobe but anything longer than tops i.e. dresses end up in a heap at the bottom due to boxes stored in it. Drawers are small The bedside lamps are dangerous, the switches are behind the head of the bed and if you pull one out to get to the switch, it pulls the other one over. People have tried which is why one is broken, they appear to be plugged into an extension cable but the leads to the lamps are much too short. Overall The electrics are a real cause for concern. The badly plugged lamps in the bedroom, the light bulb resting on the hallway shade, the flickering non dimmer dimmer connections in the family bedroom and kitchen Master bedroom is visibly damp, pointed out by another guest in June. The step from living room to kitchen not mentioned anywhere, description says all ground floor, technically it IS but someone with reduced mobility has to take it into account when booking, it makes a huge difference particularly as the bathroom is at the rear of the property, its a high step and for wobbly legs is hard work, a handle would help. Also pointed out by previous guests. Lack of waste bins! Sounds petty but bags hanging on handles isn't a good look. There are only 2 bins, bathroom and kitchen, both are small. Teacakes a nice touch by the kettle, but someone ate one prior to our arrival and left the wrapper behind a cushion in the main bedroom! The garden steps are lethal. They are deep, narrow and have no secure way of keeping your balance, one set goes to the greenhouse, the middle set are narrow and the third set starts in the middle of a flowerbed! Anyone one not totally steady on their legs (of any age) are risking injury. The owners of this property need to do some much needed bits and bobs for this to be worth the £1100 off season amount we paid. The propery is suited far better to a double and twin bedroom rather than squeeze 5 people in, not including cots! They are very clued up on fire safety but it seems at the cost of making sure its a true home from home. We have been hiring cottages for 25yrs and this is the first we have had such issues with.

I started my 3 weeks Scotland holiday in Steading cottage for a week in 2023.
I am very keen of cleanliness, and in the past I was a hotel housekeeper spot-checker manager. I exactly know it's not easy to hit my standard. But Steading cottage made it:) I didn't find anything below my (very high) standard, even ready ice cubes were waiting in the freezer to make my gin-tonic happy after my long journey! The owner is a friendly, kind and smiley lady, and a very expert host, with this spotlessly cleanliness I would even bet her star sign is Virgo (just like mine). The cottage is a separate house next to a working farm, but I never heard any disturbing noise. True, that I was out every day for long, but when I was back, the farm was quiet and very-very peaceful. Just what I love! I spent some evenings in the small, well maintained beautiful garden, and also in the front of the farm, leaning on the stone fence watching the beautiful sunset far above the hills. Fabulous viewing! It is also in a very good location, 3 minutes drive from the little town Kirriemuir. Also, I could reach all attractions in the middle and middle-east Scotland, so among other things I visited Blair castle, Highland safaris, Balmoral castle, Dunninald castle, the east-coast, Drum castle, Pitmedden garden, Hopetoun house, The Kelpies and so many on. True, that I found the B roads very bumpy and potholed, some of them flooded, but this was the case almost all of the east; while later on the west side, near the lakes and mountains, the roads were well maintained and perfect (more tourists-more money). I still loved the whole east, too, with its rolling hills, further horizon and gentle sights, and to enjoy all of these, Steading cottage was a perfect starting point. I loved to get back there after a long and busy day, and have a deep restful sleep on the perfect mattress in the comfortable, clean house! I tried a few cottages all UK-wide within my holidays, but so far this cottage is among the first! I hope to go back one day:)

Please refer to my stay, which you stated 'is important to us'.
We arrived on Saturday 16th March 2024, tired and hungry. One of the first things we planned to do was to let family members we had arrived safely. There was no phone signal. The next morning we had to travel about one mile from the cottage to obtain a signal. Fortunately we were able to contact Chloe at Sykes at 10.49 who appreciated our situation particularly if there was an emergency and we were unable to leave the cottage. We are both in our 80s and my wife is partially disabled. Later I returned to the same location and phoned Sykes at 12.06. Chloe was on her lunch break, so Sue took my call. I returned to the cottage and left them to try to contact the owners who apparently lived locally. We tried to follow our plans for our holiday but felt very vulnerable all the time we were in the cottage. On Tuesday I picked up a phone message while away from the cottage. Chloe had tried to contact the owners by phone without success so had left an email. She said she would contact us if she had news. That's the last we heard apart from the usual automatic marketing messages which were totally inappropriate at the time. We left the cottage by mid afternoon on Tuesday 19th. We have heard nothing further from Sykes Cottages. We have heard nothing whatsoever from the owners, even although they allegedly live locally to Auchmithie. We have stayed in dozens of self catering cottages, caravans, lodges etc over the past 50 years. We lived in rural Angus for 30 years. We know what to expect. If we had no phone signal while living in Angus, we had a landline. Only once before have we been let down by a caravan owner and even then we were provided with a superb alternative because the site owner was only too happy to remove the caravan from his site.

I am grateful to Woodside House for providing such an amazing house (set in extensive private grounds) for me to use for a significant family celebration.
Prior to arriving I received messages, welcoming me and my family and a lovely bottle of wine was provided. Thank you. It was made clear that someone would be available at all times should I need this but there was no intrusion. Ten adults (ranging from 21 to 88 years) and two well behaved dogs were accommodated very well. The house was very comfortable and warm and the size of the rooms allowed us all to relax easily and move about (even with a zimmer frame). The house has its quirks. Not all the lights work, window shutters might not close due to radiators, there may not be enough wine glasses for everyone (but a trip to the supermarket sorted that one) and crockery is located in different places in the kitchen, dining room and hallway. It all added to the experience though. The main living space is a lovely bright room and the dining kitchen has a welcoming open fire (matches, firelighters & logs, etc are not provided). The lighting in the kitchen could, however, be better especially when cooking in the evening. The entrance hallway is gigantic. It was really helpful to have a downstairs toilet (that also has a very impressive state of the art shower). The house has a striking stairway leading up to a lovely hallway off which are all the bedrooms. The bedrooms are bright and comfortable as are the two bath/shower rooms upstairs each with a wc. The private grounds are great. I wanted a venue that could accommodate my family for a happy occasion and Woodside House enabled this. Happy memories were made in this house and for this I am extremely grateful. Thank you.

First Impressions of the cottage where quite positive, it is an old stone Building which remains cool even on a warm day.
The heating to the property is controlled by a timer which in turn is controlled by the owner, hence at night on our stay in mid September it got fairly cold. There was also a fume smell emitting from the oil boiler in the en-suite double bedroom, especially if the door to the en-suite bathroom left closed. Hence due to there only being two of us we opted to sleep in another of the 3 bedrooms, the lack of heating control at night was a slight downside to our stay though. Privacy was another problem at the cottage as it is part of a multi unit letting set up, with a number of permanent residents also. This meant the need to the keep curtains drawn, or residents can see straight into the holiday let, access to property was via two Drives each very pot holed even for a 4x4 to use. There was also a distinct lack of where to go leaflets for things to see and do in the area, on leaving we left our leaflets there for new guests to use when they arrive. Seating in kitchen looked period but was very uncomfortable and all the chairs rickety, with very loose wooden Joints with some previous attempted screw repairs quite dangerous really. These need repairing properly to safe guard future occupants safety when using the focal point kitchen, as this is a premium property it really needs all the little details re- addressing especially the boiler when the rental season finally quietens down. The property could be brought right back up to scratch, over the course of a couple of days re-investment and time. Overall we enjoyed our time there but it could have been so much better.
