What our customers say about their holidays
Mr Westby - Verified booking
Hillside is a lovely property. The owners have seamlessly blended the old and new to create a spacious environment for 8-10 persons, ideal for family gatherings such as our own visit. It is where 'old country vicarage' meets 'designer kitchen'. The bathrooms are all modern, with the wet room very handy for surfers, walkers etc. The living and dining space is well appointed with a large dining table and chairs, with the living room space containing a mixture of sofas and easy chairs. Ours was a winter stay and therefore we did not take advantage of the outdoor spaces but there is adequate patio space for all of your guests with outdoor furniture and BBQ space. NB. as the name implies, the rear of the property is terraced as it is on the side of a hill. The pictures in the advert for this property are very accurate. I would make people aware of the following. Access to the main entrance to the property is via 10 steps, you would still need to climb five steps if you were to take the long route around to the back door. Therefore, this might not be suitable for persons with different abilities. However, if this is not too challenging, then the good news is that one of the double bedrooms is on the ground floor, as is the wet room shower complete with wash hand basin and WC. If visiting in Winter, then the dual air source heat pumps keep the property lovely and warm with a mixture of radiators and underfloor heating. Each room has its own temperature control. We didn't touch these as they we set just right. Plenty of cooking equipment and more than ample numbers of crockery, glasses and silverware, so some can be in the dishwasher and there is still plenty more to use. Not all visitors might be like us, country dwellers. The short walk to the village is along a narrow road, some of this has no street lighting. Would recommend you bring a good torch, spare batteries and also at least one person in your group to wear a Hi-Viz vest. It really does help drivers see you. Can thoroughly recommend the Manor Inn for pub classics and Sunday Carvery or just for drinks and the big football matches if that's your thing. For something a little bit special, try the New Coast Kitchen. Brunch in the mornings and fine dining in the evening. Superb. Hillside was everything we were looking for to accommodate grandparents, parents and teenagers.

Some of the pots and glasses were dirty and had to be washed. There were big cobwebs on the walls in the main bedroom, in the wardrobe where we are expected to keep our clothes, and more thick ones in the en-suite, complete with a few spiders. In the kitchen we dropped something on the floor and it rolled under a small sideboard, when we pulled the sideboard out, it was THICK with dust and dirt with a black banana under there as well. The kitchen table was sticky and we washed and cleaned it several times. There are steps outside the porch leading to the front door, one of the paving stones was broken and loose and is a danger, it wobbles when you stand on it and we had to put it back in place several times. There is ivy growing through the walls into the porch. There is a honeysuckle plant outside the dining room window which is too high and spoils the view, it could do with a good trim. Also while we were there, the toilet flush broke in the bathroom on the top floor, we rang the housekeeper who said it had broken 2 weeks previously and had been repaired, she would call us back but never did. We managed with the toilet, it was just very slow to refill. We had the same property last year with the same issues, apart from the toilet and banana, gave it the benefit of the doubt but it was just the same. No work has been undertaken and it is in need of a thorough cleaning. Overall this is a lovely property in a really good location but it does need some TLC.

Absolutely fabulous holiday cottage. Large, with plenty of space for the up to 6 guests it can accommodate. VERY clean and VERY comfortable. Great enclosed garden for dogs, although if you have a small dog just keep an eye on them when they go between the house and garden. Even with wire strung under the 5 bar gate they could still slip through. But honestly...that is the ONLY slightly negative thing I can find to say about The Anchorage. They take their Covid responsibilities seriously and we did not feel at all compromised. Really quiet area but only 1/4-1/2 a mile from Putsborough beach either over fields or by car and which is dog friendly and like the property, very clean and has excellent toilet and lovely cafe facilities. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and can not wait to revisit The Anchorage in September, fingers crossed with family this time! Thank you Rob for a great cottage and holiday.

Embleton is a wonderful property, we have stayed here many times over the last 10 years and it just gets better and better. The location is of course superb and the house is really lovely, everything is finished to the best standards which means it's a joy to stay in, with every convenience thought of, comfortable beds and furnishings and plenty of hot water. The added touches of a pint of milk in the fridge and a selection of very nice teas were really appreciated after a 6 hour journey, best of all the tiny Easter egg left on the end of each bed, children and adults were really delighted! I almost forgot the Easter mini rolls too, we ate them at Baggy Point, thank you so much! I hope to stay at Embleton every year, thank you Embleton owners and housekeepers and the team at Marsdens Cottages who negotiated a long weekend let for us. We love Embleton!

Bon Accord is such a beautiful house, located in a wonderful location, where you can view the sea, sand dunes and countryside. With an elderly member of the group, it was also excellent for easy access. We were lucky to have a week of glorious weather. We made use of the barbecue and garden. Baggy Point is a short walk away, and we also found the nature reserve close by as well. We spotted seals in the sea and plenty of bird wildlife such as Meadow Pipit and Skylarks. Croyde village is a short walk away, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the cottages and gardens on view. We had a superb meal at the new Coast Kitchen restaurant and would highly recommend them. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home - we had the most amazing time.
