  The flat was perfect and the location couldn’t have been better. However, when we arrived we were given the keys to the garage and left to find it. It wasn’t difficult but we couldn’t get the garage door to open- bearing in mind we have a similar garage at home. We tried repeatedly, wasting precious holiday time on it but with no success. Phoned the housekeeper who suggested we park in a local car park and claim back the cost when we got home! We phoned head office and spoke to Will who said it was ok to park in front of the garage... The housekeeper asked us to leave the keys under the mat but although she took them we didn’t hear from her until we were leaving and then only because I messaged her. We were concerned about leaving it and walked back to check a number of times. One of the other garage owners left a curt message on our windscreen suggesting that we move the car ASAP. We were promised “secure parking” but what we got was very unsatisfactory...

  Rural Retreats describe it as a ‘beautiful and well presented apartment’ which in our opinion it is not. The only area we can rate it highly is on location. The flooring, with exception of kitchen/dining area, needs complete refurbishment. The flat needs redecorating. The cleaning needs improvement, ie flies on window ledges lamps not working. Water leak through fan in bathroom bringing down black ‘bits’. Uncomfortable sofas. Communal areas need complete refurbishment. Overall not up to RR usual high standard-we have been a customer for many years.

  I was assured that the keys would be collected from a nearby hotel, with more details to be given closer to the stay, according to the initial explanation. However, the arrival information I received a week before departure instructed me to make an international call to the housekeeper and, as a result of various subsequent problems, I had to take a taxi to the housekeeper's home to collect the keys. The unexpected call, communication and taxi costs were necessary and, most importantly, it was mentally stressful.

  This was below the usual Rural Retreats standards. Bed wasn't very comfortable, some maintenance issues needed attention, including dangerous mirrored intrusion in hallway and peeling wall paper. Very hard to collect keys through housekeeper, who didn't answer the phone but always called back. Wifi is essential now, not an option. The commercial BT alternative is expensive and unreliable. Supply wifi as others do, even if it means charging a little more per night. Everyone else does that.

  Generally well equipped and comfortable apartment. Very generous hamper and supplies provided. Excellent location. Some musty smell in public areas and some noise from neighbours, probably to be expected for age and construction of building. Could do with better lighting options in lounge - e.g. extra lamps and TV /DVD somewhat old. A gas fire which doesn't seem to work, but central heating is OK. Good overall.
