Holiday Cottages In The United Kingdom

Best holiday cottage locations

We have gathered some of the best holiday cottage locations across the UK to help you with your search.

Cornwall

Suited very much to beach enthusiasts, Cornwall is England's little corner of sand, sea and sun. And located in the south of the UK, this Cornish gem is one of many areas of outstanding natural beauty.

For the young at heart, Cornwall offers some of the best surfing in England, especially at spots like Porthleven, where the waves are great for experienced surfers. But from buzzing galleries to an indoor tropical rainforest, there's lots to enjoy in this county.

Devon

With long sandy beaches, rolling countryside, ancient moors and postcard villages, Devon is a varied landscape. For the walkers among us, there is the wilderness of Dartmoor with the ancient Wistman's Woods. Dog-friendly cottages are popular in the area, and there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches, pubs and restaurants.

For historians, a strong Roman presence has made its mark on many of the towns dotting the countryside, especially Exeter with its Roman history and 11th-century cathedral. A large number of holiday homeowners choose Devon as it is a friendly, welcoming family location that offers a variety of attractions, scenery and wildlife unseen throughout many parts of the UK.

Lake District

Otherwise known as 'The Lakes', the Lake District's natural beauty, wildlife and rural charm have been an inspiration to many artists and writers, such as Ruskin and Wordsworth. The Lake District is very much a place of natural beauty, observation and discovery. Popular with walkers and hikers, the fells and mountains ensure there is no shortage of walking available.

For those looking for a more relaxing trip, museums are sprinkled across the landscape, such as The World of Beatrix Potter and the Windermere Jetty Museum. There are an enormous variety of activities at Lake Windermere where you can learn something new or pick up a hobby such as sailing or windsurfing.

Northumberland

Known for its rugged countryside and being submerged in history, Northumberland holds snapshots of some of the most critical changes in British history. Probably the most famous historical feature of Northumberland is the presence that the Romans had in the region. You can walk from Wallsend in Newcastle and follow Hadrian's wall all the way across the country to Carlisle.

Northumberland is also the county in the UK with the most castles, with the Heritage Coast having four castles in the space of 20 miles, including Bamburgh Castle. Northumberland is not all history though. It is also renowned for its stunning coastal scenery and breathtaking beaches.

Best holiday cottage types

We've put some of the most popular cottage types together. This should help you find the perfect property from our library of thousands of!

Last-minute luxury cottages

If you want luxury accommodation at the last minute, choose one of our late availability luxury cottages, for a fraction of the price. For many people, luxury means different things. For some, it's a jacuzzi or a pool; for others, it's a property with high-quality furnishings and a great location. By looking through our wide range of luxury cottages, you'll be able to see what's available and book with confidence.

A luxury cottage is a property that offers you the very best last-minute holiday possible. National assessing bodies such as Visit England, Visit Scotland, Visit Wales or the AA have awarded these cottages with four or five-star ratings. These registered luxury cottages excel in comfort, ambience, customer care and attention to detail.

Last-minute romantic cottages for two

Celebrating a birthday, anniversary or just fancy a mini-break together? Our wide range of romantic cottages for two is sure to make any occasion magical. Our library of cottages for couples ranges from secluded getaways to beachside cottages and even more unique retreats such as apartments in castles.

A last-minute romantic cottage will be marked with a heart symbol, meaning it's ideal for your romantic getaway. Having a self-catering cottage means you can have some time together without being bothered by staff. You can be relaxed in the knowledge that you have your slice of heaven just for the two of you.

Last-minute cottages with swimming pools

Pools are not an everyday part of a house design in Britain, but more and more people are adding a pool to their homes as summer temperatures rise and the advantages become apparent. A holiday cottage with a pool offers space where you can relax, keep fit or just have fun.

There has undoubtedly been an increase in pool numbers when it comes to holiday homes and many of our cottages have pools as part of the package. Pools can be shared between a group of cottages or entirely private.

Last-minute cottages with hot tubs

Whether you are planning a romantic break, an adventurous getaway or a family holiday, a hot tub always helps you relax. We've got tonnes of cottages with hot tubs at affordable prices, across every location in the UK.

As hot tubs are compact, properties in the middle of a buzzing city can easily have them and the same goes for cottages in the middle nowhere. After a long romantic walk, a day's surfing or taking the family cycling through the woods, everyone will want to jump in a hot tub and relax those muscles. Have a browse and find the perfect hot tub cottage for you.

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Lisa - Verified booking

The Cottage met expectations - was really beautiful, furnished to a great standard and only 10 mins walk to beach, fabulous beach cafe and lovely views and walk above the beach.

Village is extremely limited for anything else with only a small post office and a garage offering very limited food items.. The 2 pubs were fully booked when we tried. Location of exit gate from the property onto a bend immediately onto a busy road (no pavement) was of concern for us with a daughter and dog and traffic was noisy; although not a problem if you're an early riser and late going to bed. Whilst generally clean, we found a couple of items of the previous occupant in the lounge and bedroom (including their booking details from the previous week!) There was also a very large coffee spillage on the counter and some dust 'clumps' which left us questioning the standard the Cottage had been cleaned to and so ended up using anticbac cleaner on all high touch items ourselves. Property was advertised at 7 nights at a given price. We took a late booking and due to the changeover date could only possibly be offered 5 nights but were still to be charged for 7 - this was the Sykes sales guy (not property owner) as we later received a small discount on speaking to a different sales person who confirmed this was possible. Dogs are extra (not stated on site but only small charge) We found the first Sykes guy quite abrupt but both ladies we later spoke to were fabulous, polite, friendly and keen to be helpful. Dorset is beautiful. Roads make for an easy drive out to other areas. Lovely coastal drive. Use the park and ride if you go into Lyme Regis as it was impossible to park.

Lilac cottage is beautifully furnished & well equipped.

We understood & appreciated the 5pm check in, to allow for a "deep clean" however the level of cleanliness was certainly not a "deep clean!" There were cobwebs everywhere, stains on the living room rug, thick layers of dust on the TV and dust/crumbs on the kitchen floor. We were also not made aware of the shared access, to the adjoining cottage, making us unable to leave the door open for our dogs to play in the garden for fear that our neighbours may come through & leave the main gate open! We also feel that the cottage description should highlight how busy the main road is, we could not have the front windows open because of the noise & getting out of the gate with 2 dogs, directly onto a very busy main road was horrendous! I notice this was addressed in the "notes" but it really needs to be made much clearer.

A pleasant stay marred by a few problems.

Overall the property was clean and comfortable and the garden was lovely. The main bedroom is large and comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped, though there are insufficieint work surfaces on which to prepare food. It is not made clear that the ceilings are quite low and, at 6'5" I banged my head a few times, particularly when coming down the stairs and while the fact that the main gate opens directly onto the road is mentioned, what isn't mentioned is that the road is extremely busy and cars pass very close, many well in excess of the 30mph speed limit. Faults noted: The kitchen window onto the road does not close properly, neither does the door to the double bedroom. The television is quite old and frequently loses its signal. There is a lot of out of date food in one of the cupboards.

The cottage is situated in a perfect area for walking, lots of walks to choose from and the buses were regular and just down the road. The Cottage was warm and the beds were very comfortable and the water was always lovely and hot. To make the stay more customer friendly the information pack needs to be kept up to date as it is way out of date, including the bus time table which should have been changed in September and the wi-fi codes as there were two different codes in the pack! The parking spot really is not big enough , even for a small car. My small Audi could not fit in as the back end would have stuck out into the road, on a bend! so really it should not be advertised as parking for a small car ... a Fiat 500 maybe or a Smart car would fit, nothing bigger.

Second visit to this fabulously cosy cottage. Super warm without having to use the upstairs radiators as new log burner worked a treat. Cottage contains all you would need for cooking or baking and facilities for evenings enjoyed catching up on films etc, or playing cards and board games. If you enjoy walking, don't look for another place to stay; lots of places accessible without using the car. The coastal walks are stunning in any weather. Do walk to the dog friendly Geevor Mine café, for a fabulous choice of breakfasts and lunches, and The Queen's arms is 2 minutes on foot for a friendly welcoming meal or quiz night on Thursdays. We highly recommend a stay at Crown Mine Cottage and will be back to stay soon. Thank you for sharing it.
