What our customers say about their holidays

Overall an enjoyable stay at a great location just inside the south side of Brecon Beacons national park.
There were just four of us and so we had plenty of room. The cottage is well equipped but would benefit from a bit of maintenance to keep in good working order. The neighbouring Penderyn distillery is well worth a visit if you like or would consider trying Welsh whisky. Issues 1. Cleanliness - the cleaning was only superficial with dust/debris still in corners and under beds, the stair carpet was covered in dirt/debris, the dining table separator covered all sorts of food and other debris. 2. The blinds and curtains had almost no effect on lowering the sunlight entering the rooms. After 6am it was almost impossible to remain asleep - I hate to think what summertime would be like. Inaccuracies 3. There are two pubs in the village, neither of which is within a 5min walk. The Red Lion (good food but expensive) is about 8min up a very steep hill. The Lamb Hotel is about 12min along the main road and has a small bar with well-kept and cheap beer and a friendly landlord (no food). Improvements 4. The mattresses in the room next to the main bathroom should be changed - it caused back pain to the person using it. 5. Even though there were only 4 of us, there were not enough quantity and variety of glasses to use. 6. The shed lock was difficult to open and should be cleaned/replaced. 7. The property would benefit from a proper shower. 8. Even though I am reasonably fit, I struggled to get out of the bath in the main bedroom. 9. Only five coffee capsules were left with the coffee machine. This made it only a gimmick as it could not be used each day. 10. The sliding cupboard in the kitchen would not close properly and made access to the plate cupboard annoying. 11. Some of the door handles/catches for the bedrooms and bathrooms need maintenance/replacement as these often stuck.

La Cala is spacious, the open plan lounge kitchen area and the quiet sitting room excellent, the kitchen is well equipped and the property is well situated.
We enjoyed our stay. Some things that would make La Cala better; the mattresses on all but the bed in the main bedroom were very poor, and uncomfortable with springs sticking into the occupants in some cases - this is disappointing given that clients have pointed this out over at least 6 years of reviews. Our duvet, we discovered on stripping the beds at the end of our stay, was badly stained, including with blood and the mattress protector worn out. Also commented on in previous reviews are sticking doors- an easy thing to remedy - the doors to the ensuite bathroom and one of the twin rooms had this problem and one of our party - a strong young male - had great difficulty getting out of his room on the first night, after which he left it ajar. Another area, commented on by many previous reviewers is the shower arrangements. There is no proper shower in the house despite there being plenty of space for one. The slipper bath in the ensuite bathroom is very difficult for elderly people to get in and out of and if you are tall is uncomfortable to sit in. It is very difficult to stop water from the hand held shower spraying all over the floor. It is a lovely house for families - there were 7 adults, 1 toddler and 2 babies in our party- so a few items for children would be a useful addition - eg high chair and cot. With the improvements suggested above this would be a wonderful holiday venue.

We have just returned from La Cala after a 7 night stay for a party of 8.
The location of the house is brilliant for walks in the Brecon Beacons and the size of the house is fantastic but could require some improvement. We felt with the size of the house the space could utilised alot more ie king size beds and bigger sofas. The beds felt old and very uncomfortable and could also use more neutral bedding. Just a few tweaks could really make this house amazing. A clothes airer would be a great help as it has an outdoor rotary line but you can't guarantee good weather in Wales so we were a bit stuck. A few bits in the kitchen felt a bit dated and could do with updating. The previous occupants hadn't put the bins out on time so we had almost a week of bin bags outside the driveway and every morning we had to tidy all the litter up in the street as the crows had pecked open the bin bags. All in all it was a pleasant stay but would only stay here again if it was updated and the space was utilised more. Great pub at the top of the hill though!

House is well proportioned and equipped as well as being ideally placed for access to the Brecon Beacons / South Wales coastline and Mid Wales.
We were a group of 8 and always felt we had more than enough room. In addition there is plenty of parking around the house which made life a whole lot easier than some other properties we have stayed in. There were a couple of issues we can across unfortunately as stated in some of the other reviews a couple of the beds are not overly comfortable and realistically need new mattresses. Another problem we found were most of the bathroom doors and one of the bedrooms had a habit of sticking, the result was on a couple of occasions people got stuck in those rooms and had to be released. TBH the above would be pretty easy to fix with some minor maintenance. Lastly one issue we found was related to the baths, unfortunately a few weeks before the trip one of our party broke her hip. There are no dedicated showers and the baths are a little on the deep side with no grab handles, whilst fine for someone able bodied it was a little problematic for us.

Lack of chairs throughout house, including in the living room.
3 of the dining chairs that were present, were broken! Poor kitchen equipment - eg a very small 2 x slice toaster, for 8 adults! Only one medium sized kettle. The light bulb above the cooker had blown, making life difficult. Generally, the lighting in the place needs attention - probably one third of the light bulbs had blown/didn't work.. Woefully inadequately sized fridge, and it had broken/missing shelves inside it. We had to ask for a quilt to be supplied for one of the beds, and also 3 extra towels were required. An accumulation of dust under the beds, etc. The venetian blinds throughout the house looked like they had not been cleaned in years. There was no bath mat in the en suite bathroom. Garden poorly maintained, the garden furniture well past their useful working life, and the decking around the back was rotting in places. This was advertised as a 'luxury cottage', and it probably was 10 years ago. It is no longer.
