What our customers say about their holidays
Melanie - Verified booking
The location of the property in Lynton is excellent.
We always had a parking spot in the shared car park despite there being around 10 other holiday apartments in the building. The kitchen was also very well equiped. The view out of the 2 front facing windows (one in the lounge, one in bedroom 1) were good but I would say because of the orientation of the windows in the rooms, you could only see the view if you were sat in the right place. The bedroom window was a small bay window side on to the sea view, and in the corner of a very large room. The rest of the windows in the property faced the back cliff/vegatation/back of other apartments in the buildling, so not much natural light coming in through them. Bedroom 1 could have done with a chest of drawers as we had to live out of suitcases all week. We had two quite significant issues with the property overall, which has impacted our holiday, which is a shame. Firstly, the downstairs room. It is described as 'quirky' in the listing but it is in fact somewhat of a cellar type room with an incredible damp and fusty smell, which we think it unsuitable for sleeping in or spending any time in at all. You enter the main building through a shared hallway through a (very) old door stepping on old gravestones as flagstones. The cellar/basement room is off this and has door leading to this area. This is just one of 6 doors in this basement room. One is a back door to the cliff area/back of house, one to the upstairs apartment, one to the bathroom, one is a locked large cupboard, and one is behind the wardrobe. There are 4 windows but all look out on to internal walls or outside walls. It's dark, claustrophic, smelly and the bedding felt damp. My daughter ended up sleeping on the floor in our room upstairs the whole week. The second issue was the bed and bedding in the upstairs room. I realise that comfort is subjective, but we found the bed to be vey uncomfortable, not helped by poor quality duvet and pillows. Synthetic and well past their plumpness, both of my pillows were completely flat. When we took the sheets off at the end of the week as we were leaving, the undersheet had stains, hairs and bits of dirt. It was just not up to the usual standard of Sykes cottages that we have come to appreciate. Such a shame as for the money paid we had high hopes. We'll be returning to Lynton but not Blue Bay.

Great location, I didn't know anything about Lynton until I read about the scenic Glen Lyn Gorge in the weekly Waitrose newspaper.
I was very impressed with Lynton, such a picturesque village, and the apartment is located within a few minutes walk from some lovely pub and restaurants. The apartment in itself is beautiful, very stylish, clean, with all the amenities (if you prefer to cook) and it is perfect for couples or families. There is a spectacular view of the sea from the lounge and 1st floor bedroom window! and it is such a treat to look at the sea first thing in the morning and late at night! We stayed with our baby and our dog, and everything was catered for! If you do have a dog, there are some lovely walks right outside the apartment (there is a poop bin outside the Town Hall, just a few mins walk away) and we were pleasantly surprised at how many shops, pub and restaurants welcomed dogs! The communication with the owner was great, he sent us an email with information about the local area, restaurants, etc, and even allowed us an earlier check in as there were no guests staying the night before. Checking-in and checking-out was very straight forward! I'd highly recommend taking either the funicular (for the beautiful views) or walking to Lynmouth harbour, which is very pretty, and really recommend the fish & chips at Lynmouth Harbour (instead of the one in Lynton). Other restaurants recommended by the owner that we loved were Vanilla Pod (Middle Eastern food), The Oak Room (Spanish food) and Nartnapa Thai Kitchen. A brilliant pub is the The Crown Pub! The staff at the pub and restaurants were so lovely! And Lynton is a great base to explore North Devon: driving along the coast to the beautiful village of Porlock or Woolacombe, one of North Devon's most beautiful beaches! I would definitely like to come back with my parents-in-law!

This cottage is in a beautiful setting just outside Cartmel.
Lovely views and idyllic gardens, with a specific closed in field to allow your dog to have a run. Itâs not for nervous drivers as has to be accessed via narrow lanes but is typical of the Lake District. Lots of places to visit nearby. Much thought has gone into comfort for guests. Itâs cosy, but bright and airy and warm . The bedrooms are ample and beds very comfortable. Lovely duvets and pillows for a good nights sleep. Lots of thoughtful touches including freshly cut flowers , fresh local bread and milk and even skin care products, shampoo and conditioner so I came home feeling pampered. Although dog friendly the owners are clear dogs must be well behaved and I did feel hyper vigilant, and if it had been raining I would have wanted to ensure dogs were washed , but a dog shower is provided outside the main house. We had towels in the porch to dry wet feet etc. If I were the owner of this house I would want guests with dogs to respect the high quality standard of this cottage. The only minor niggle is the tv in the living room had poor quality sound. Itâs not our priority as we were out late two evenings and I had a book to read but we found it hard listening when playing a dvd or watching any programmes. Other electrical goods fridge freezer, oven washing machine, and tumble dryer ( if needed) all excellent condition . We loved it and would come again. Best Sykes Cottage I have ever stayed in . My friend who came with us said itâs the best holiday cottage she has ever stayed in. Thank you Karen & Martyn

If Vane Hall had a middle name, it would be “Luxury.” Tucked in the heart of Torquay, this delightful retreat swept us off our feet from the moment we arrived. Sleeping six with ease, it became the perfect stage for our coastal adventure—a home where every detail whispered comfort and every corner invited us to relax. Days were spent exploring the local gems, but the real magic unfolded as the sun dipped low. The kitchen became the heart of our evenings, buzzing with laughter and clinking glasses as we whipped up sumptuous suppers. The dining table hosted long, lingering meals that flowed into conversations when we retired to the lounge on the enveloping sofas—moments that felt as effortless as they were memorable. Each bedroom was a haven in itself, with plush linens and soft lighting that made bedtime something to look forward to. But let’s not forget the garden terrace—a perfect morning coffee spot with views that stole the show every single day. Vane Hall is more than just a holiday home; it’s a place where six souls can come together, unwind, and create stories worth sharing. We arrived as travellers, but we left as a team bound by the joy of a truly boutique escape.

We have just returned from a very relaxing stay at Pheasant Cottage.
The accommodation is clean and very comfortable with some lovely welcoming touches of fresh bread and milk, thank you. The grounds are beautiful to sit peacefully in and there are plenty of walks directly from the front door. Although the garden itself was shared with the attached property, there was a secure paddock very close by which we could exercise our dog safely in. Cartmel village is a short drive away (tiny roads but traffic is light) or a 25 minute walk across the fields and you can buy a range of delicious local produce from the shops. There are several coffee shops and pubs - something for everyone! It really is a superb location within easy driving distance to the Lakes too.
