What our customers say about their holidays
Vicky - Verified booking
The property was totally unsuitable for us.
There were several flies in every room and evidence in ceilings and walls where people had squashed them. Many spiders on ceiling and especially corners. When I booked I explained we must have ground floor accommodation as my husband can no longer manage the stairs. I was totally horrified to find steep stairs going up to kitchen and living room. As we arrived in the dark and later than we had intended there was nothing we could do about it that night. We phoned Sykes the following morning and they said they were unable to assist with finding us alternative accommodation but would get their customer service to contact us by phone. To date this has not happened. We were left by ourselves, stressed and worried where we would sleep that night. Once back home we are straight into a planned building project and extremely busy. The only communication Sykes have had with us is an email 27.9.23, 20 days after our 1 night stay from Customer Relations Team saying Francesca will respond to us. She has not called. Asking us to complete another questionnaire is their only contact with us We are left out of pocket for the 3 nights we could not stay in our accommodation and still stressed by the experience. We are extremely disappointed with Sykes and would not wish this situation on anybody else. I am hoping that by writing this report it will galvanise Sykes into contacting us direct and resolving this problem. Since 18th sept we have heard nothing other than the 1 email mentioned above . !st week of September booking for us - our Anniversary! We couldn't have chosen better - it was a home away from home
. Everything was thought of - even a hairdryer (although it was suited for drying not styling). The kitchen was fully equipped - all the tools you could possibly need on holiday, and some you might not - even a fully loaded spice rack; condiments, and tea, coffee, sugar. As a conscientious renter we did make sure that we replenished any of the consumables - seems only fair! Plenty of blankets, for those chillier nights - not that we had any on our stay. A super comfortable bed ensured a good nights sleep. I did take my eye mask, so as to ensure no light pollution woke me too early, that did serve me well. The bathroom was spacious, with a good shower over a deep bath - absolutely splendid. Will, the owner, left a really useful information pack on the table, detailing local places to visit, and the history of the cottage - very informative, and most useful. If any further info was needed there was a very knowledgeable neighbour (Pete) popping into view most days - he was friendly and helpful. We made use of the recommended local chippy and Chinese takeaway (who delivered to us). Both were detailed in the info pack - and yes, they were definitely worth making use of. With some doggy treats left for our four-footed fur-baby, we were totally settled for a delightful week-long stay. Would we go back? A resounding YES! Anything we would change? No, everything you need is there - it is for a self-catering holiday after all! Thankyou Will - we loved it!

The cottage appeared to be clean on available, but it came apparent the bathroom had not been cleaned appropriately for sometime.
It was evident a cloth had been sweeped across the bathroom , but the shower had black mould around joints and rust on the shower head. The toilet had an horrible bad drains smell, the sink had black mould around the joints and the corner bath plug had a large amount of dark long hair booking the flow of the water when attempting to empty the bath. The kitchen only had one roasting tray so made matters difficult to cook a roast dinner. No mop or hoover, no plug for kitchen sink which was a light brown colour. The floors had not been moped. I purchased a mop, brush and dust pan plus a baking tray. We did ask for a mop and brush which we did receive only to find on r retrun home from a day out that they had removed it from the cottage. I spent my valuable holiday time purchasing toilet blocks, bathroom cleaner, mopping the cottages floors and cleaning the bathrooms but not the shower because it just made me feel sooo unclean. The towel radiator had rust all over it The toilet blocks helped remove the horrible drain smell , the hair removed from.the corner bath and bathroom nice and clean and no mould in sight, except the shower. The baking tray l purchased helped to make up an evening meal without stressing. I am able to provide photos. Would like some money back for the time wasted cleaning the bathroom etc

The cottage was originally booked for the Spring but due to Covid restrictions we had to defer the trip until October.
However the cottage was lovely albeit on a muddy farm due to the weather. Heavy rain at night but apart from one day, lovely weather during the day so ideal for a holiday. It is also a working farm so bookers need to be aware of this. Don't expect to keep your car clean. The cottage had everything we needed and was very clean and tidy. It was also ideally located for us as it was near everything we wanted to visit. Ravensglass to Eskdale railway, Westwater, Conniston Water etc. Also took the train to Carlisle which is a great journey as the railway follows the coastline for much of the journey and only £18 return. There is a lot to do in Western Lakes and the cottage is an ideal location to see the area. The only criticism I have is with Sykes. Having originally booked for the Spring and having to move the booking to October due to Covid lockdown, we were never contacted re the price difference, which was about £100 cheaper. It would have been nice to have been asked if we were happy to continue to pay the extra £100 to the owners, which we were. We are retired and have not been financially affected by this disease, but understand many have been affected, so were happy to pay the extra. But it would have been nice to have been asked.

This cottage was very clean, well presented, nicely decorated and furnished.
It was well equipped particularly the kitchen. Extras such as tea and coffee, salt and pepper, kitchen roll etc. were useful. The cottage was warm and cosy and very conveniently located. However, although there was seating outside, attention to the weeds / plants growing could make the outside space more attractive. This place is very conveniently located in Fortuneswell with a wonderful sea view. It is close to the pebbly beach, and a short walk to a pub, post office and Co-op Supermarket. There are not many restaurants around here, but there is a fish and chip shop and an Indian takeaway. There is a petrol station and Lidl Supermarket 5 minutes drive away, close to the marina. On-street parking is tight and limited. However, there is parking if you don't mind a walk up or downhill away from the house. If public transport is used the cottage is conveniently located to the bus stops up and down the road from the house to take the bus into Weymouth or along the rest of the island. People around here are nice and friendly. The island has a wealth of history and lots to do.
