What our customers say about their holidays
Tanya - Verified booking
Honestly? We actually really liked the place.
It was large and spacious, lots of room for the 5 of us. It's well equipped, and the owners have obviously put quite a lot of hard work into making the place a nice and welcoming base from which to explore Filey and it's surrounding area. However... What let it down? Cleanliness. Whoever is cleaning the property was obviously rushing through and simply cleaning easily seen areas so that first impressions are positive. Look a little deeper though and that changes. I really don't want to spend the first hour of my holiday cleaning and bleaching the toilets. Lifting the lid to find 'dirt' marks and hairs meant i wasn't going to let my family use the bathrooms until they were cleaned to a good standard. It just went downhill from there, with the fridge having crumbs and marks in (all easily cleaned off by us), one of the freezer drawers was full of unwrapped sausages and burgers obviously left from a previous group, and an opened bag of ice, all of which we had to throw out ourselves along with cleaning the drawers so we could use it for our own food. The kitchen hadn't been properly wiped down, the microwave, oven and bin obviously just given a quick wipe over and there were crumbs at the back of the kitchen-sides and under the glass chopping boards/around the sink. In the living room we only had to sit on one sofa to be given a perfect view under the opposite sofa of thick dust and crumbs. Non of the above was 'searched out' by us, just easily viewed areas that should be obvious to someone cleaning a place. The bannister was wiped but sticky. I didn't dare move any furniture, beds, etc as I dread to think what it would have been like underneath things. That said, my husband told me on the way home at the end of our week, that he checked all rooms to make sure we hadn't left anything and found a soiled thong behind the bed my son had been using. I guess that will still be there as I very much doubt the cleaners ever look so it could have been there months! On our last day, while loading the car, my husband was approached by someone we assume was one of the cleaners, and asked if he was staying at No.1 and could we strip the beds and bring all the washing downstairs for them as they 'can't park for long so it saves us time' - I suppose that explains the lack of proper cleaning... Unfortunately in addition to this the beds were very hard, like sleeping on a board, with the pillows being very cheap and flat so giving very little comfort. I appreciate bedding is a very personal preference, but a little comfort on holiday would have been nice. Such a shame as it's obvious the owners really care about the place. We love Filey and have been coming for a long time. Sadly we won't be back here.

The lodge was beautiful, spacious and bright.
The layout worked well for our family and our daughter especially loved the bunks. Set in a peaceful setting, we enjoyed the quiet that it offered. However, the rattan furniture is not as per the picture, itâs a basic set which only seats 4 despite the lodge being able to sleep 7. A identical table and chairs were being used in the lodge opposite, Iâm not sure if this was a coincidence. The bbq, despite being a Weber, was unusable due to the fact there was no handle on top of the bbq lid and inside was absolutely filthy and rusted in places due to the holes that the handle left. The oven wasnât very good and we struggled to even cook oven chips properly. It only seemed to cook well on the right hand side of the cooker. The skirting boards were falling off in places, particularly next to the fridge where they were just resting against the wall. The main issue we had though was the blinds in the main bedroom. As per a previous review, they were completely broken which meant you couldnât open the blinds nor close them properly. Unfortunately, the blinds flooded the room with light from 4am which woke our 1 year old. We had lovely weather during our stay but had to buy a fan as we couldnât access the window in the bedroom and the room was really hot. The mattress in the bedroom was spring based and we found this really uncomfortable. The remaining blinds across the lodge were also a little broken too. Unfortunately we found there to be a lack of cutlery too. Some basics like salt and pepper would have been a good addition along with some hand soap. This along with the lack of childrenâs cutlery, for the price that we paid made us feel underwhelmed. Especially when weâve been to other properties, paid less and got more for our money.

I went with my family for a relaxing break and it ticked all the boxes.
Great property, with lots of fun things to do if you like adventures. What really surprised me was all the history surrounding the Bethel. I would recommend a visit to the museum across the road and you'll realise why it's so special!! The locals are all really nice and the property itself is well located. I had a lengthy chat in the pub with a few of the locals and learnt a lot about Bethel. I just had such a fantastic week. Comfy beds, great area for conversing and the fact there are two bedrooms on the ground floor was great for my disabled mother. As was the parking just outside. The property has the most amazing fire too and just had everything we could ever have wanted from a self catering property. Even the fact there is a separate lounge was nice if you wanted to get away and watch tv. I loved that some thought had been taken to put games aside, make sure there were instructions etc, and it really is just a place that feels like a home away from home. I would say there is a lot of history and some great fossil hunts around the area and the restaurants (I ate at all of them) were well priced and decent quality. Everyone was really nice in the shops and I loved that. Its hard to get a place that ticks all the boxes...and I don't think the pictures do it justice. It's an absolute stunning property when you first walk in. Oh, If you want some nice walks this is a great base and it is a well positioned property for most of the coastal stuff in Yorkshire (and this is my fifth time going). I could go on and on, but I think regardless of the time of year this is a fantastic place to visit.

Beautiful property in a good position within the village.
Excellent accomodation and facilities with a very nice sociable main living area, excellent kitchen, nice woodburner and views out over the beck. The bedrooms were very comforable. We were a party of eight and the chapel was the perfect size for all. Parking is a bit challenging in the village, with there being one spot at the property, on the pavement out front. This was tight but big enough to accomodate an SUV. Additional parking is available at the top of the village - one reasonable but small council run car park and a more expensive private one. Arrive early to get the former. You can pay for multiple days, which saves having to make return trips to the car park. It is a short walk from the chapel down the high street to the village shops and the front, where there is an excellent pub. The Staithes museum is right next to Bethel Chapel and is well worth visiting. They have a number of excellent pieces related to celebrated local artist Laura Knight. There is a good Coop at the top of the village for provisions. We very much enjoyed our stay in Staithes and can recommend Bethel Chapel for anyone who needs larger holiday accomodation!

We had a 4-night stay at Bethel Chapel.
Members of 3 families who have stayed at several other Staithes properties before - and we were really impressed with Bethel Chapel. The building itself is so interesting architecturally, and it is furnished and accessorised really well. We booked very last minute and had read some reveiws saying cleanliness was an issue but this was definitely not the case in our experience - in fact we were looking out for this aspect and were very pleased with the standard. It's just at the bottom of the hill into Staithes, so very accessible for getting into and out of town. There's room for a medium-sized car on the front which is a huge bonus. All the beds were really comfortable. The property has oodles of internal space, so if you are a larger family or sharing with friends it ticks the boxes of great social space as well as being able to get some alone-time if you need it. Has views across the beck from the large chapel windows. We would definitely come back to Bethel Chapel.
