What our customers say about their holidays

I arrived on Friday for a 3 night break which I was very much in need of.
The property was small but well equipped and adequate for my needs, however there was a strong fusty smell as if the place needed a thorough airing/deep clean. I opened all the windows and went out in search of a shop where I could buy matches to light scented candles. I found nowhere due to the isolated location and the fact that it was Good Friday. I went back thinking I would get used to it. I was unable to relax and could not get the television to work (fortunately there were some old dvds). I rang the owners but couldn't get through due to there being no signal, so I sent a text message. (I never got a response) I went to bed in the hard and uncomfortable bed and woke up still feeling very disapointed and ill at ease. The smell had not abaited at all. I packed my bags and went to leave as I couldn't face another 2 nights there. I saw the owners as I left, they apologised and said that maybe I was very sensitive to smells!!! I didn't want to make a fuss, I just wanted to get home. I today contacted Sykes who got in touch with the owners, who have denied the refund for the 2 nights that I did not stay there. I think this was a fair request having spent an unsatisfactory first night and having travelled almost 80 miles to get there, and hoped that common decency would prevail. Sykes have said there is nothing more that I can do. So I am over £300 out of pocket and have an unsatisfactory 1 night stay to show for it. To say the customer service from both parties has been poor is un understatement!

The location is great, right in the centre of the town, and the beds and bedding were very comfortable.
The central heating was effective and the shower good. The cottage is clearly someone's personal holiday home that is let out, rather than solely a holiday property, and this means that there are a lot of personal items there (which gives it character), but it also means that it is not designed, equipped and managed in the way a dedicated holiday place might be. The sofa and armchairs are well used (and a bit broken!) and the kitchen and equipment are a bit haphazard. For example, there are 4 x stove top coffee percolators, 3 x cafetieres and 2 x large teapots but no jugs and 1 really small oven dish with no lid. There are 5 x steamer baskets, a fish scaler and a fish kettle, but no simple kitchen scales and only one small saucepan with a lid! The woodburning stove door doesn't shut properly so you can't keep a fire in without roaring it (and getting through a lot of fuel), which isn't helped by the fact that the grate had been cleaned out totally, so there was no ash base on which to burn wood - coal needs a clean base so it gets air underneath, but wood needs to burn on a bed of ash. We got through 3 bags of wood trying to get a decent base. Overall, it's a nice cottage and the quirks and omissions would be 'part of the charm' if it was your own place, or that of a friend or family, but we have had much better cottages at this price point.

Perfect accommodation for a solo person working in the area.
On site parking and the Keysafe entry to the studio allowed total freedom to come and go at any time. I was welcomed by host Valerie on arrival and entered a delightful space where delicious fruit cake was waiting on the table, an ideal accompaniment to red wine which, fortunately, I had in my case :) The first chilly evenings of autumn had arrived but the electric heaters soon filled the studio with an enveloping warmth. The sitting area was cosy, the bed comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The bathroom with its pleasingly hot electric shower was a little cramped but served its purpose. The Wi-Fi worked well and there were an adequate number of 13 amp sockets for charging phones and laptops. There was not an opportunity to sit in the garden beside the large pond but it would have been idyllic on a warm evening. I was given some home grown apples when I left which are now deep inside several apple crumbles. Thank you for making this reasonably priced, peaceful accommodation available.

Naunton cottage needs a really thorough clean, every corner/ under furniture/ moving a dining chair from under the table revealed dirt and dust.
It hasnât had a thorough clean in a long time. The front entrance smells strongly of urine despite me cleaning it several times. The paint in the bathroom continually rains a fine dust of white paint over everything- you have to see it to believe it - but Iâm sure you are already aware. It was constantly covering towels, and clothing we were drying on the towel warmer and toiletries. Inhaling fine paint is hazardous to health and not something I was happy about exposing my two children to. Finally only two chairs for outside despite being a family of four. I tried to complain during our stay, only to be pointed to Sykes after our stay ended. I have asked for a partial refund I feel so strongly about the condition of the property. We will be holidaying again in the area but at this point itâs unlikely to be with Lyme Bay / Sykes as no one as yet, has acknowledged the situation.

Lovely cottage very conveniently located in the heart of Lyme Regis old town.
A cottage with character, but with the modern furnishings you'd expect such as a lovely walk-in shower and comfortable beds. A good base to explore Lyme Regis on foot from. Some nice touches like the welcome pack and even complimentary binoculars! Suggestions for improvement: As the cottage opens straight on to a street, a blind or net curtains would be useful at the lounge window as passers-by tend to gawp in. Also, the old cast iron garden furniture needs disposing of and replacing with a new garden set (with a cover to keep the seagull poo off) As we went at the height of the season Woodmead Car Park, that the parking permit is for, was always full but we managed to get a space the day after arrival (by getting up early doors and transferring the car from the long stay car park)
