What our customers say about their holidays
Walkiria - Verified booking
Flat was cozy , warm and spacious.
Village is pretty with a little river running across it. Church bells go every 30minutes but it didnât bother us. Sadly , village seemed to have been deserted. It was supposed to be lively with shops , tearooms , pubs ⦠however the shops and tearooms were either closed or âfor saleâ . Pub opposite flat didnât serve food and looked very uninviting for families. It didnât matter to us as we were out and about all day and then cooking at the flat . There were some housekeeping issues that if addressed would make place nicer . Front door lock is temperamental as well as the hot water taps . Bath taps are loose as well as the work top behind kitchen sink. There were only 3 forks available for a place that caters for 4 people . It would have been useful to have serving spoons and serving dishes, colander , potato masher , bread knife , jug . It was a nice surprise to find dog bowls in the kitchen and a couple of games inside the ottoman pouffe in the living room. It would be nice to have blackout blinds as very bright in the morning. There is no loo brush . There are 15 bright spotlights on the living room ceiling . It would be nice if they were dimmable. Bedding could be of a better quality. Mattresses and pillows are overdue replacement in our opinion⦠we could feel some of the springs from mattresses⦠however we all slept well after long days out and about . It was very nice to get back in the warmth of the flat at the end of day . Not possible to have a bath though, as hot water kept running cold on and off ⦠so pointless. Shower head was a pain ⦠not much water coming out ⦠no water pressure .. Extract fan in bathroom hasnât been dusted in a long while . The area outside flat could do with some cleaning and tidying up. Someone left a pile of cigarette buds on the floor by the front door. As a dog walker who always clean up after my dog , I was disgusted to come across a lot of dog mess around the village , left behind by lazy people . Despite the points raised above , we had a lovely stay at Howardâs hideaway â¦but with some TLC it could be much better.

The flat is comfortable, and decorated nicely.
However finding it was an issue, as there is no sign or number on the door and the parking situation is tricky with it being on a split double bend with double yellow lines so we had problems locating the flat and unloading when we arrived, it would be useful to be clear about the location on the advert. Also, advertising it as a cottage seems a little misleading. It is a flat with steep stairs from the front door to the lounge and kitchen and further steep stairs to the bedrooms. We would not have booked it had this been clear in the advert, my mother is 82 and disabled which made it really challenging for her. The 'balcony' area off the kitchen needs a good clean up, there were lots of wasps and it was slimy underfoot with lots of leaves. Not an area of any use really and there is no outside area for a dog despite it being a dog friendly property. However, the location is great - very central, and we were pleased with the double glazing as we could hardly hear the roads and wine bar next door. Could have used some microwavable dishes, and instructions for the microwave/grill thing and it was disappointing to find we were allocated three clothes hangers each, and no wardrobes or anywhere to hang towels. Lastly, this is the first place in 20 years where there was no welcome gift, but we got over that. Great place to explore Holmfirth and the surrounding Pennines and Peaks from but not ideal for dogs, elderly, or disabled people.

Pros - right in the centre of Holmforth near all visitor attractions Clean inside and cosy Cons NO PARKING, did specify there was parking on the advert but had to park in the local CO--OP £6.
50 a day ( x2) which owner said she would pay . After several calls and texts said she would, but did not refund. ):. Very noisy at night till early hours , it is a joined to a wine bar so expected at weekends. Avoid front bedroom if you are a light sleeper. Stairs very steep, I am very fit, but I was going up with my hands before me on the stairs. This has already been mentioned by a previous review ,as he had fallen down them.- suggested a hand rail but nothing fitted. Please note- no number on the door, so very difficult to find. We arrived at around 3pm and it was chaotic trying to find the airbnb, traffic extremely busy. Again a previous review mentioned no number on the door, but again nothing had been done. This would cost about £2 for a couple of stickers and save a lot of hassle! I hope you don't find this review too negative, I am always honest .

Excellent week. Can recommend walks from the book on Mam Tor and Kinder Scout. Lovely, easy cycle from Buxton - Bakewell, on Monsal Trail - see leaflets. Windmill pub and Vale Inn are both good. Lyme Park House are also good, but glad we went early - got very busy by the afternoon. The cottage is an excellent base from which to explore the area. The book of walks seemed accurate, with its timings for length of walks, also flat walks along ridge to Shining Tor. Cycled from Blackwell Mill through trees and tunnels, which was relaxing and scenic. Bakewell touristy but pretty. The games room at the cottage was a massive hit. The house was clean and tidy and the welcome hamper, including scones, was wonderful Thank you.

We were warmly welcomed by our host Helen on our arrival and were shown around the property.
Itâs a well furnished, well equipped and comfortable basement apartment in a large traditional house just a few minutes walk from the centre of Buxton. It had all we needed and more for our stay. As described in the literature there are steps down to the apartment but they were easily negotiated. As it was February we didnât take advantage of the seating options available in the gardens surrounding the property but still enjoyed walking through them with our dog at the start and end of the day. The beautiful Pavilions Gardens are only a short walk away and there are many options nearby for exercising a dog. A lovely few days Thank you.
