What our customers say about their holidays

Just returned from a 2 day stay.
The cottage is basically OK but had some serious maintenance issues that ruined our stay: The boiler broke down on our first day so we had not heating or hot water. We ended up having to walk across a courtyard to another empty cottage to use a single bathroom rather than having two ensuites that we'd paid for. We reported that at 8am and it wasn't fixed until 5pm (after we chased again at 4:30pm) and it seemed that there is no emergency policy in place for 24/7 boiler/maintenance cover. The person we spoke to was not exactly sympathetic and it felt like we were an inconvenience, not a customer. Looking at feedback, it's not a new problem. We thought that was the end of it, but later that evening the electricity tripped and we lost use of all sockets and the kitchen. So, again we had to go over to the other (rather musty smelling) cottage to use the kitchen to cook dinner. At least the lights and heating stayed on! The owner did promise to give us a refund, which is good, although in all honesty just a bit more empathy would have gone a long way. She said that we'd have to apply to Sykes Cottages (via this form) to get the refund. Something else I didn't report at the time - there is obviously a rodent problem (although we didn't see any). There are mouse poison dispensers everywhere (outside and inside the property) to prevent this becoming an issue. However, it will be very easy for mice to get into the property as there is nearly an inch gap, for the full length under the front door! Presence of mice is normal out in the country, but what concerned me was that the poison dispensers in the front courtyard had not be loaded properly and I found my dog licking a poison block. Fortunately I saw this as soon as she had found it and she's fine, but these really should be pet proof! All in all this was a pretty poor experience, which is a shame as with a little bit of an upgrade (e.g. fixed heating system, new sofas) and better customer focus (e.g. providing a welcome pack with a pint of milk and providing better instructions to get there as the satnav postcode given takes you to the wrong place) it could be quite nice.

The location of the property is ideal for visiting Bakewell and the surrounding area.
However, the property is in need of some redecorating in places and was not particularly well-cleaned on our arrival, especially the kitchen/oven/fridge. The bottom oven did not work at all and my email regarding this has not been replied to by your company (neither was a previous one I sent with regard to extending our stay). The tap in the kitchen often fell off as did one of the bottom outside boards on one of the cupboards. There is insufficient cutlery (forks). The shower is tricky to use - there is a very fine line between extremely hot and freezing cold and water leaks out of the back of the shower head. The shower is positioned in the narrowest part of the bath and causes extreme condensation as there is no fan in the bathroom. Generally, there is a lot of condensation on the cottage windows. The parking situation is very tight for two cars, especially as it is advisable to reverse park due to the regularly busy traffic when wishing to drive out. The area outside the cottage is covered in foliage and therefore very slippy after rain or frost. The downstairs area is comfortable and cozy (living & dining room) and the bedrooms are well-sized, with comfortable beds.

Negative: When we arrived (on a dark November afternoon) the heating was off.
We spent an hour trying to get the heating to come on using the thermostat. Eventually we found the heating was off at the boiler. We never managed to get the thermostat to work and managed the eating by turning it on and off manually. The lighting in the dining room is poor so we couldnt easily read the heating instructions. The Radiator in the bedroom was turned off. The bedside light in the main bedroom had no bulb. There was a 9" by 6â hole in the bathroom ceiling by the light switch. Looks like an electrician did some work in the roof space and didn't close it up. There is a 6" step down on the drive that it would be very easy to damage your car on or twist your ankle. There was nowhere to put drinks etc while watching TV, we brought a bedside table down from upstairs. General cleanliness was "ok" at best. Positive: Comfy bed! Great location near town. Hot shower! Lots of wine glasses

Accommodation was well prepared and clean.
Master bedroom bed did not feel king sized and mattress is at the end of its life, storage space in that room was limited. The only large mirror in property was in the twin room so not accessible to all holidaymakers. Twin room good size and good storage. Lounge comfortable. Dining area good but a long way from the kitchen. Bathroom has a good shower. Kitchen lacked a few useful things, such as potato peeler and grater, and it would have been helpful if there was one more plate/bowl/glass than people. Surprised to find the heating on on our arrival (in mid August) although straight forward to turn off. Instructions as to what can be recycled in Derbyshire would be useful as would clear signage for which bin was which. Directions as to how to access the rear garden would also have been useful. Local eggs sold in the games room were tasty. We were amused by the resident goat's climbing ability.......!

Thank you for letting us stay in your cottage, the cottage is in a perfect location for exploring Bakewell and the Peak District.
The cottage its self appears luxurious with on trend decor. It wasnât particularly suited for dogs as there was carpet in the lounge which we didnât want to spoil. So we had to sit in the dining room which was very dark, this meant we went out a lot of the time. The bed were made up with lovely linen, however the mattress was v basic and uncomfortable. The bathroom requires an overhaul or some mould management and a new blind as it is all very mouldy. The decor is generally good, although flaking off in places due to damp. There were lots of ants within the house including on carpetted areas. It was unclear if the fire could/should be used. No wood provided and no instructions. So we didnât take the risk. Which was a shame as after a long days walking we usually enjoy sitting on a comfy chair and having a fire. All in all, the cottage met our needs but does require some improvements.
