What our customers say about their holidays
Janette - Verified booking
My husband and I arrived at âshire cottageâ, on the 6th October for a 3 night break.
On arrival In the village we were very pleased that we had chosen such a pretty location, unfortunately we cannot say the same for the property we had booked. We were first struck by the condition of the outside decking, dirty, unswept covered in moss and looked as thought it had not been maintained or cleaned for some time. Entered the property and could instantly detect the smell of damp. Also noticed how dirty and grubby the sofa and armchair was., the arms were pitted with black dirt and the seat area was badly stained. Main bedroom floors looked dirty and noticed the divan bed base looked dirty and had no valance sheet, although did have on advertised pictures. Entered shower room, there was a dirty mop and bucket left under shower head on equally dirty floor. The grout on the floor and walls in some places was black ( the owner confirmed this when I complained as being the builders fault when he installed the tiles, and not used the correct grout and was never able to get it looking clean) there was also limescale stains on floor ., the owner also stated that this was due to the problem with the tiles and has not had time to rectify this and âit is what it is â, his words. The other bathroom had a bubbling effect behind the door and paint was peeling, which was why we could smell damp throughout the property as this was quite a large area of damp. The owner agreed, once again in his words, âthat the wall in the bathroom is blownâ, but we are making it clean and tidy till we get there, along with the maintenance of the shower, which are on our list for a maintenance period.. these issues should surely be addressed before allowing visitors or at least make visitors aware so that they can make their own decisions as to whether they stay there or not. The smell made us feel really sick, we did not use the bathrooms at all. The toaster was rusty snd stained., whilst I understand that this is a minor issue to some people .. how canât you put bread into a toaster that is rusty and unclean, he said he canât be expected to swap a toaster after every visitor and the reason it was rusty was because of the sea salt in the air caused things to rust ., twenty minutes from the coast in an enclosed building? The beams, ceilings, blinds and cooker hood were covered in cobwebs. We only stayed one night and left as soon as we possibly could, we stayed a total of 14 hours. We would have left immediately had we not travelled over 3 hours to get there. We had trouble contacting anyone as the internet would not work in property ., we tried to boost router but did not help.. We did not get a response until the morning, where I was advised that he would appoint his cleaner to return to re-clean, these problems could not have be remedied in this way as he had already confirmed that he needed time to arrange a maintenance slot to rectify issues. As we had not slept or showered we decided to leave and were on our way home. We contacted Sykes numerous times on our way home they advised us that could not help at all with complaint they would pass on our complaints and pictures to owners. When I contacted them again after receiving no response they sent me a copy of correspondence that the owner had sent Sykes stating that he would not be refunding and payments as he deemed our complaints to be frivolous .. the issues Iâd raised were going to be dealt with when he could fit in maintenance and that he thought they only reason I had complained was because I wasnât happy with the area. Absolute disgrace. What a complete and utter waste of money and time.

The location of the accommodation facing the sea and the enclosed outside deck with furniture. Fabulous! The light flowing through the rooms. Comfortable couches, beds and brand new carpets. The attractive design and decor and available items in the kitchen. We have stayed in other Host & Stay properties and had the same high level of thoughtfulness and cleanliness. Everything was brand new which was lovely for us. Good sized shower cubicle. Very comfortable accommodation in all aspects for the two of us, small but perfectly formed! The quiet - it is semi detached but we did not hear our neighbours. It's in a quiet spot on the holiday park. Good car parking close to accommodation. The sea pathway is in front of the accommodation and is a flat walk for miles with lots of seating to admire the views. Beach access is easy. Can walk along the pleasant South and North promenades right from the door of the property - and there are two different beaches one is sandy and one is pebbly! The golden sand beach in front of the property is the dog beach but they were no problem, there is plenty of space on the large sands and it felt quiet on a May bank holiday weekend with hot sunshine. The Park and Ride bus depot is a 5 minute walk away and the Land train is about a 10 minute walk - both along the promenade. We had glorious sunshine for the majority of our stay and the sunrise and sunset was gorgeous. On our rainy day we were cosy inside and still enjoyed a promenade walk in the rain. The shower tray could be slippy when using soapy products, caution is needed then it is ok. Out of the control of the host, there are building works around the property to build more chalets - they were not operating during our stay so I cannot comment on noise levels because there was not any. The builders had fenced off the pathway which meant we walked over rough grassland to get to the beach path. On wet days this is more of an issue because of muddy shoes on re-entering. There is a door mat of course. Once the pathway is accessible this removes the issue. Host & Stay cleaners are diligent and no doubt will stay on top of cleaning the carpets between stays.

Very clean & comfortable.
Fantastic communication from the owner (Michael) & comprehensive treats on arrival. Our general view was nothing had been skimped on - things like clingfilm, foil, kitchen roll, hand-wash all provided and good quality towels & bedding. We didn't use the coal fire (again plenty of supplies to do so) instead what Michael had set the heating at was more than adequate. We were sorry to leave a day early due to our dog needing to go to the vet, she is our absolute priority & unfortunately we had to leave in a rush. We always got a car parking space immediately outside. I noticed a comment that people can see into the cottage, I don't think we noticed anyone peering in! Nafferton is a small, quiet, picturesque village & the road outside is very quiet. It is well situated for visiting, within a short-moderate drive, Bridlington (the Old Town is pleasant with antique shops), Filey (lovely promenade & Sterchi's chocolate shop!), Hornsea (again great seafront & a free all day car park) & Malton (Food Capital of Yorkshire). In essence highly recommended the cottage and can't rate it highly enough. With many thanks to Michael.

The hosting company waited until the rebate deadline had passed before informing me of additional costs, and would not send information about access until that was paid. This is a really unethical practice. The property was on a building site and parking area was covered in debris. Secondly, the paths to the property were uneven due to rabbits digging, and I fell, badly injuring my ankle, which ruined the weekend. The host and the management company simply directed my feedback to the owner of the park. Absolutely no accountability. The property was well equipped - but the management was very poor. The whole place was very dusty, with dead flies and cobwebs. The bedding was too small for the beds, so you couldn't tuck the bottom sheet in. There were light bulbs missing, cigarette butts outside, and the internet very slow. I requested a reimbursement of the cleaning fee, but this was refused as I did not let them know first thing (I was occupied with an injured ankle)

This was a lovely little cottage in a very pretty little village.
The owners were there to greet us on arrival and very friendly. The enclosed back garden was perfect for our dog and a nice little sun trap with seating area. The welcome packages were a great touch and my son was very pleased with the sweet treats. Very well equipped with most things that we required. Very strong WIFI signal which is a must for us with teenagers. Atwick is a great base for exploring the coast and has a lovely little pub that serves great food. Mr Moo's Ice cream farm nearby was a big hit with my son. The dishwasher wasn't working in the cottage which would of been a problem if we were there longer. Also the master bed wasn't very comfortable, It was quite rocky so we could feel every movement every time either of us moved. Although we are quite spoilt with a very good bed at home. Over all this was a lovely place for a short break and will recommend it to others.
