What our customers say about their holidays

Extremely disappointed with the accomodation at Bakers Yard.
We knew it was dated from previous reviews but the foisty, damp smell and dirtiness throughout was terrible. The bedrooms were adequate and the bed comfy however the bedding did not smell freshly laundered and the pillows were flat and uncomfortable . The bedding was so old it was thinning and felt cheap. The lampshade was covered in cobwebs at the side of our bed in the back room. Leading onto the bathroomâ¦it was disgustingly dirty and mouldy. The shower screen had black mould alongside the seal and the bath seal was also black as was the grout. The tiles were cracked and broken and sharp edges were exposed alongside the bath. The wall light in the bathroom didnât work and the top of it was covered in thick dust. We had the quickest of showers each morning and had to wear our flip flops for fear of cutting our feet on the tiles/flooring. Upstairs in the living area, the cushions were stained and filthy. There were dead flies in the flyswat left on a windowsill and the cupboard fronts felt sticky with grease. Again, numerous light fittings did not work and the skirting boards were thick of dust. One morning we were awoken early by the sound of builders setting up scaffolding on next doors cottage - we were unable to get our car onto the driveway due to their Lorries blocking the access and as such ended up paying for our car to be in the public carpark overnight for two nights. Any chance of us being able to sit in the yard with our books and coffee were quickly scuppered due to the noise. No welcome hamper upon arrival; we had travelled some distance to get there and then, due to check in being at 4pm (for cleaning?? I think not!) we had been out walking. Every other holiday cottage we have ever stayed in have had welcome hampers with enough to get you through til next morningâ¦tea, coffee, wine and dog treats! There was nothing. I have tried several times throughout our stay to alert you to our complaint and have found your response lacking and uncaring. It is our first experience of using Sykes and Iâm sorry to say, we would be most reluctant to book with you again. If this is the calibre of accommodation on offer with Sykes, we will not be back. I have taken numerous photographs if you would like them although youâll be able to see them on our Trip Advisor review. I look forward to your response.

Firstly the cottage has not been cleaned on arrival.
With two children and after a 4 hour drive we had to them sit in a local pub for 2 hours whilst it was cleaned. (Sykes did give us some compensation however 6 days later have still not received). On arrival back at the cottage it was still not cleaned to a suitable standard. There was hair stuck to the carpets upstairs and fat splatted at the back of the cooker. The hob has residue left on it and the bathroom has marks on the floor. The parking situation outside of the cottage caused havoc. The advert stated roadside parking opposite the cottage. This is not true. There are double white lines painted therefor you cannot park opposite them, which when we were loading and unloading we were told by numerous âlocalsâ who would go out of their way to tell us we canât park. There is also a parking warden issuing £35 fines. To find somewhere to park in a village of this size with no parking available was an absolute nightmare. I was baffled on arrival at the front patio which is actually the door step⦠you would also never want to sit out there on a main road through the village? To watch tv we tried using the sky box which asked us to insert our viewing card. Firstly itâs 2023, who still has these type of devices and secondly, if we did, why would we bring the viewing card on holiday?? Wifi is chargeable, we had to buy this daily at quite a significant cost. There are no instructions for the cottage left out we had to search cupboards but this was minimal. As there is no garden, there was also no access to an outside bin so the kitchen bin became very full and we had to start taking rubbish out with us to find a bin? The welcome we received was the most unwelcome I have had in any cottage I have stayed in over the years. There wasnât as much as half a toilet roll in the bathroom⦠The whole experience left us baffled, frustrated and put off from ever staying with Sykes again. It was an inaccurate listing of a property. That said, the village itself had 2 nice pubs with very friendly staff.

I have used sykes many times for a doggy friendly cottage across the UK and every time I have been extremely satisfied with the property.
As we have had such lovely places in the past and sadly unable to afford a foreign holiday this year I thought I would pay a little more and go for a premium property. As the property cost almost £700 I expected it to be perfect I certainly expected EXACTLY what was promised and although the cottage was very beautiful and incredibly well positioned it was advertised as a dog friendly property with a fully enclosed garden , the pictures even showed a garden with a fence all the way around but this was very misleading! There were a number of things that although very minor to resolve impacted greatly on my holiday. The enclosed garden that was shown only had a fence on 2 sides meaning my dogs if off the lead could get out and get into the local woodland or on the main road but also the drive was shared and other vehicles came down so if I let them off lead they could have been hit I was FURIOUS this was the case and even more irritated that each morning when I normally let them out for a wee I had to put there collars on and a long lead and go outside myself and wait in the rain instead of just leaving them in the secure garden as it was anything but. I also thought it bizarre that as its advertised as a dog friendly cottage the property had creme carpets downstairs, how are you supposed to keep the carpets clean with muddy dogs? All in all despite the property being very attractive the lack of a SECURE enclosed garden as PROMISED was a disaster and ruined my holiday, all the property owner needs do is put a fence on the other two sides and a gate or a farmers gate on the drive way. I doubt sykes will contact me about this feedback but I would like some form of apology.

Our stay at Winder Green was a last minute arrangement, due to our booking at a different property being cancelled less than 24 hours before arrival.
Sykes offered us Winder Green based on the location of our previous property and party size (including a dog). Despite our initial disappointment at the last minute change, we had a fantastic Easter weekend at Winder Green. Ged and Julie went above and beyond to turn the property around for our stay and we really appreciated them reaching out to us directly to welcome us, with additional resources to enhance our stay. The children (& grown ups) were very touched to be greeted with an Easter egg for each child. The property was warm, clean and comfortable. We only gave a 4 for comfort due to the smaller double bed. The kitchen was well equipped and we were treated to a lovely box of biscuits, milk and tea/coffee provisions. What was really special about our stay was the views and the immediate surroundings. The children loved watching the red squirrels, pheasants and rabbits and you could easily loose a few hours peacefully enjoying the outdoor sitting area. You truly feel like youâre miles from anywhere and the absence of light pollution too made it a great location for star gazing. We spent time adventuring on the fells and the proximity to Pooley Bridge made walks accessible. The steamer was a highlight for the kids. The laundry and boot room were very much welcomed. We would definitely return - there is so much more to explore in the area.

We stayed at Bakers Yard Cottage for the week between Christmas and New Year.
We visit Grasmere frequently so knew where the cottage was located. There were a few pros but unfortunately more cons as listed below, not only to help the owners make improvements but also to guide future guests what to pack. The parking wasnât as issue for us. We do have a big car so we realised from the listing there was no chance weâd be able to park in the space - we parked at the car park on Red Bank Road, £40 for the week. Pros Location Comfortable beds Clean sheets Clean bath towels and plenty of them Cons No mattress protector on one of the beds Only 4 dishwasher tablets (for a weeks stay) Only two tea towels Two black bin bags Cleanliness; Cupboards were dirty on the inside and the cupboard doors sticky Top of the extractor fan dirty with cobwebs Dirty fridge seal and door Dirty dials on dishwasher Dirty crevices on the shower Shower screen is mouldy and leaks We struggled to use the Henry Hoover as all that I could find was a brush to attach to the hose. Carpet is too thick for the doors downstairs, they are very difficult to close and as a result the bottom hinge on the hall door is coming off (photo provided if required) Big damp patch on kitchen sealing (photo provided if required)
