What our customers say about their holidays

We stayed in a 17th Century cottage last summer and had the following issues - *House was damp (bedding was like being in a tent, rug in living room was damp underfoot etc) *House, although gorgeous, was riddled, I mean hooching with spiders - I didn't know this was a thing with thatched cottages but I know plenty of people who would have walked straight out of this building-my son refused to sleep in his bedroom. There were 7 spiders in the small downstairs toilet sink just on the day we left, to give you an idea of how hooching this house is, that's what a 30cm by 30cm area? That's not counting the rest of the spiders on the ceiling and down the corners of the walls. *No storage, the only cupboards and wardrobe are in the master bedroom, no good if the people you stay here with aren't your kids/family *The house is uneven with lots of stairs, of course this is part of hiring a house like this-my warning is for anyone who struggles with stairs, this is not the house for you, and for those who don't struggle with stairs be careful, the stairs, landing and bedrooms only have boarded floors that are painted so the stairs particularly (are very deep) are slippy, we all slipped backwards at one time. *No storage in kitchen for your food, literally no cupboard space, how is that possible. *The worst thing was that we had a visiting peacock, sounds lovely doesn't it? We had 2 cars there and on day 1 we visited Stonehenge in my husbands car while mine stayed at the property - the peacock spent the day fighting itself in the reflection of my black car, it literally scratched up every single surface, every door, every panel, it wasn't just a bit it was all over. It must have been at it all day. Before I started posting my comments I did the fair thing and contacted Rural Retreats, a couple of times if I recall, and I've never heard anything back. They have my email address as I still get emails advertising themselves. It's a shame they didn't follow this up as I won't use them again - I can see online they have many similar complaints on their customer service.

A pretty cottage with lovely views, but a disappointing stay. The interior is OK, but the cleaning wasn't great as has been pointed out by previous reviewers. I had to dismantle the dishwasher which was blocked with gunk and limescale to make it work, there were toys under the furniture, and there were quite a lot of hairs around the house which definitely weren't ours. These were minor issues. There was however a serious problem with the water supply requiring us to filter 100% of the water for the whole duration. WiFi is described as "for entertainment only", but is not strong enough to watch iPlayer or use smart phones to work out what's worth a visit. The garden is billed as "entirely enclosed" which for a dog owner was a selling point. This was inaccurate as it is entirely possible to walk around the side of the cottage and out onto the road at the front (as our dog proved positive when he was returned by a passing driver). The hedge between the garden and the adjoining cow field also has gaps that a dog or small child can easily get through. To received a text message from the housekeeper asking us to leave the place as we found it was just one annoyance too many. I realise these are all first-world problems, we but paid first-world prices! I'm happy to say that we received a satisfactory refund, and Rural Retreats handled things really well, but this was our summer holiday and we felt let down by the misleading description and water supply issues. Maybe focus less on the tiny historic carvings, get the marketing accurate, and update the WiFi?

Absolutely filthy.
The only clean thing in the kitchen was the dishwasher. We had to hoover when we got there and went to mop the floor but the mop was so disgusting we went to the supermarket to buy a new one. I had bought home cooked frozen meals for my 1 year old and when I went to put them in the freezer I was horrified as the freezer had so much ice which had hairs and other debris in. The mattress was disgusting and covered in stains. The bathroom was not suitable to bath a small child as we could only use one side due to the bath screen being siliconed to the bath. The water pressure was also shockingly awful. The remote for the tv was absolutely covered in goodness knows what so had to scrub the thing as was worried if my daughter touched it. The sofa was extremely uncomfortable. There are no facilities. Yes can wash clothes in the dingy outhouse. The âgardenâ is totally uneven with a huge drop and completely overgrown so would have been extremely dangerous to take our 1 year old. Honestly the worst place Iâve ever stayed. We couldnât cancel or try to get money back as was such a busy weekend there was no where to go so would have had to if driven home. We did leave early as it was raining all day on the second to last day and nothing to do at the cottage so had no choice but to leave

We found ourselves at the end of 2023 between houses having sold one and much work needed on our new house. So, we spent seven days at Benville Cottage over Christmas. Extremely attentive the day before we left as there was a problem with the router. When we got there all resolved. Readiing previous comments on the cottage we weren't too bothered about a 'heavy' hoover and we took an HDMI cable etc to allow for the lack of a Smart TV. The cottage now has a seriously upgraded TV and a new hoover so no need. Arriving the day before Christmas eve armed with our small Christmas tree and various decorations we found the cottage decorated complete with a magnificent tree, the whole thing magical. Basket of goodies perfect and made even more like home with the AGA which we turned up and used for the whole week! Between the AGA and the woodburner the house was, if anything too warm at times so we didn't use the woodburner as much as we expected to. Overall, an extremely well presented cottage with all you could ask for Winter or Summer and for us and our two dogs a sublime setting to unwind before returning to the real world in 2024. Would heartily reccomend!

This is our second visit to Benville Cottage and another wonderful stay. We love being able to walk our two dogs straight from the door and easily get onto country paths within a few minutes to stride out into the beautiful Dorset countryside. The cottage is super comfortable with a working Aga and a gorgeous sun trap of a garden with lovely rural views. It was a joy to enjoy so many sunny meals outside and just listen to the birdsong. The cottage is simply + stylishly decorated, the beds very comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. Communication with the housekeeper was excellent and he gave us some great local intel. The cottage was also super cosy when the temperature dropped later in the evening + we fired up the wood burner. All in all a fabulous stay made even more perfect by some excellent restaurants in nearby Beaminster namely the Ollerod and the Walled Garden restaurant at Parnham Park. The fabulous Tealâs farm shop is also conveniently situated just off the A303. Well worth a stop to pick up delicious local products at the in store deli, charge your electric car and walk your dog in the meadow.
