What our customers say about their holidays
Didier - Verified booking
Pros: Generally quiet, well placed for local walks, supermarket and town sites.
Heating, bathroom shower and kitchen electrical appliances worked well. The bed matresses were comfortable. The cottage had wall to wall wool carpet in the main part. The log / coal burning fire was welcome. The front garden has well placed outdoor furniture for catching the sun. Cons: The property manager had not brought the property up to a suitable standard at the time of booking. The exterior areas were over-grown with extensive moss spread causing excess blue-bottle, fire fly as well as wood lice, ear wig and spider to invade the cottage both front and back. When warm, the rear conservatory requires the rear door to be open, causing the insects to invade in large numbers. The exterior front door mat had more moss than brush. The interior front door curtain had many insects witin it's rear on arrival. Much of the cottage was not cleaned with clear evidence of dust on skirting boards, plug surfaces as well as some grimey fittings. In the main rooms, the interior walls were inadequatly covered with one sparsely applied coat of paint with numerous missed patches. The sitting room sofa covers smelt as though they have never been washed, making it diffiuclt to sit in the room in the evening, even when reconfigering cushion arrangement or lighting a fire. The toilet in the bathroom smelt of the same and no amount of dis-infectant diminshed the smell. It's mechanism fails to produce a proper flush and needs service. The cottage specifices no pets but several of it's kitchen cupboards were haphazzardly stuffed with pet detritus of baskets, toys, bowls etc in an unsanitary state of wear. A dead, preserved cat in the sitting room did not compliment the find. The cottage specifided an equiped kitchen for preparation of meals, but on arrival basic impliments were absent and needed to be requested. On departure a number of items still remain absent such as serving spoons, grater, water jug, tea pot etc. A wide range of old, dusty and half drunk bottles of alcohol of many types were found on kitchen surfaces and in cupboards. Many were past their sell by date and it wasn't clear why these were in-situe or if they were permitted or safe for use. A couple of shelves were badly mounted, notably in the bathroom and also in the rear bedroom, where one shelf was suspended by just 2 loose screws and could easily collapse and potentially hurt a guest. The rear bedroom has very limited storage for clothing and the adjacent linen cupboard is musty and not enabled as an obvious solution. The property managment stepped in with some assitance to begin with but the quantity of issues which mounted requiring attention would have siginifcanly disrupted a much needed break. Sadly, in the end, the property was vacated prior to departure date due to falling unwell during the stay. It's not clear if this was the result of the conditions which were encountered, which is worrying. The property has potential but it clearly, in our case, had been rushed onto the rental market with inadequate inspection or preparation by the property manager (Manor Cottages) from which i choose the booking because i presumed a high standard of quality. I paid the high rate of rent but got a cottage as described.

Not Clean, not best customers service and not dog friendly.
It was a last minute booking, so we didnât investigate thoroughly. Reading some reviews afterwards, I donât think we would be willing to spend over £200 a night in a place that needs a proper deep clean! I mean proper deep clean! At first glance it looks ok, but look at your toilet seat before you sit down or on your glass before you pour some water (or wine) in it. Even the general information folder left on the coffee table is so dirty, disgusting and has mouldy pages inside. On the top of that the place is damp and therefore the smell downstairs in not pleasant. Squeaky toilet door that will defo wake you up at night. It is such a shame because the cottage is lovely, just needs some TLC. The owners, well, we only met the husband, who came the first night to say hi. They live literally next door. The wife was in touch only via text message and I can assure you there wasnât even a âhelloâ in her message, not âlooking forward to welcoming youâ, not even simplest courtesy. I knew straight after we arrived that dogs are not that welcome as stated in the advert, there wasnât even a water bowl available. All there was for dogs is a âpooâ bin in the garden (handy I accept), and sign to clean after your dog. Also the owner complaint that our dog run into their garden (not separated at all from our cottageâs garden), and that if our dogs poos in their garden they need to clean it, so he shut the gate to the garden. On the top of that, the intro folder sates that dogs are not allowed upstairs, and not allowed in bedrooms either. Well, bedrooms are downstairs, kitchen, lounge and dining room upstairs, I have no idea where we supposed to keep our dog. On the plus side the area is lovely, really pretty. A lovely coffee shop down the road and Jolly Farm Shop were great for quick shopping or bite to eat. Also a warning that Chapel Cottage shares the drive/ entry and garden access with October cottage, so if both have guests at the same time, it might get busy. We were lucky that October cottage was empty. Also the narrow road a few people refer to, it is narrow but not unusually narrow. You donât have to worry, unless you drive a lorry!

I booked The Stable for a family weekend break, 2 adults, 2 children under 12 and our dog.
I didn't have much in the way of expectation as we hadn't been to this part of the UK before but we had the most wonderful break. The photos of The Stable don't quite do it justice. It is beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped and comfortable. The views from the sitting room and main bedroom were breath taking. To add to this was the truly quaint surprise of the Steam Train coming along the bottom of the garden, some way away but visible and audible. It was the icing on the cake for us. The Stable and other apartments are on the main road, closer than we thought but the birds in the trees were more audible than traffic and so the road was of no real concern and caused no issues. Plenty of parking spaces for the 4 apartments too. Before we arrived we recieved a call from the owner to check estimated arrival times and to let us know we could be in the apartement an hour earlier than check in time of 3, which was lovely. A welcome basket with Easter goodies was warmly recieved and so thoughtful. The Stable is located 10 mins from Puzzlewood which we thoroughly recommend. 20 mins ish from Tintern where there is an Abbey we recommend seeing and 20 mins ish from Chepstow where we looked around the castle. The Stable is within walking distance of the High Street with a Tesco and petrol station and some lovely restaurants/take aways close by. The park and cafe set behind Lydney High Street were a lovely surprise, as was the public footpath opposite the house to which access is gained in the last road on the left as she come to The Stable, behind the houses to the right as you enter the road. We had breakfast in the garden overlooking the forest. The garden is beautiful and well kept and thoughtfully placed outdoor furniture is dotted around for sunbathing, eating and just watching the birds. Our children have told me they want to come back. We might just do that!

Where does one start?
I contacted Hillary prior to our visit for help and suggesstions, my partner and I have not had the best year as we were due to wed late May but wedding due to Covid-19 we could not go forward. Hillary was very responsive and helpful, during my planning stages Hillary suggested a local photographer and lovely Amy to make our wedding cake. We got married earlier in the day in East London and booked the Cotswolds for our Minimoon which actually was our honeymoon, we had the best time. The cutest Chapel Cottage which is a home away from home, everything you would need plus more. Our beautiful cottage gave us the most happiness and we cannot wait to visit again. Such a clean place with the most beautiful views, you will not need to bring anything for the cottage as Hillary provides everything you need and the grounds are the most beautful. The cottage is is in reach of everywhere you would like to visit, we visited Stroud, Sapperton, Frampton Mansell, Stratford upon Avon, Nailsworth, Cirencester, Cheltemham etc visiting the best places to view and eat from following the cottage guidebook. Upon arrival we had ruffles on the gates and cottage which made our visit so special and personal, leaving our lovely cottage has been so depressing and we miss it so much, my partner and I are very sentimental therefore Chalford has been very special. With such a great host and cottage you will have the best stay, there is nothing I would change, this has been the best experience of 2020! Also, we loved the attention to detail, Hillary has the best eye for China plates, Laura Ashley and John Lewis :) the best discreet cottage we have stayed in.
