What our customers say about their holidays

  • Elizabeth - Verified booking

We really enjoyed our stay at Bobbin cottage.

The kitchen diner is a great size and a good space for cooking and chatting. The lounge was very warm and cosy - so much so that we didn't need to light the wood burning stove (darn!). There was an unofficial community apple festival during our stay. Lots of people have apple trees and had boxes at the end of their paths with a note, 'Eating apples free to a good home -take what you need", which was lovely. Matlock is a town of hills, and the cottage is located near the top of one of these, so we were much fitter when we left than before we arrived! There is a pair of playing fields a short walk from the cottage, which was great for walking the dog. A couple of drawbacks - the boiler is in a cupboard in one of the double rooms, and you walk through the twin room to get to the attic bedroom. Neither of these is an issue if everyone is up and about at the same time, and this also reflects that this is a traditional cottage and part of the charm is the layout. The parking space near the cottage is a bit tight, and the neighbours are a bit twitchy about parking. We had two cars and when one pulled up to unload, we could see faces at windows so we moved as quickly as we could so we were out of the way. There was on street parking very close to the cottage. We would stay at Bobbin Cottage again.

The holiday cottage was compact and homely and had beautiful views over the hills surrounding it .

It felt like an escape from our other pressures and some of the neighbours were very helpful about the surrounding areas and lots of leaflets in cottage too . Parking at the cottage was reasonable, and we were shown by a helpful neighbour how to access property behind ,as to the front is a pretty busy road, so difficult with shopping and dogs . It would have been useful to have some basic pointers about useful info, as to how to work the boiler, use hob and recycling or bin facilities. The manuals were in a drawer, but I for one struggled with the convector hob , gave up one night but eventually got it to work . For dog owners ,they need to be prepared to lock front door and take dogs out on lead to garden that is set up high at the back..up 2 sets of steps ,this was not an issue for us,but could be if less active . The bonus was the rural setting was really lovely . The beds were comfortable enough and towels and linen provided.. Possibly the sofa and chairs needed to be a bit bigger or something for sprawling, but yet again the cottage is quite small for larger furniture .Many thanks, we enjoyed our stay and the purple heather on the hill behind was in full glory ..

This was a great property well laid out and comfy for us.

The little extra features in the property like leaving pepper salt and bin bags two toilet rolls helped. The leaving of the information book on the property and the local area was a nice touch. The quality and cleanliness of the bedding and towels was really good. The fact there was a small freezer and a dishwasher was great as we did eat in for some of our stay. The neighbours to the cottage were very pleasant which is good and the fact that the designated parking space was always free was also great as there is very limited parking although we had no issues finding a space for the second car on the hill near the property. The only tiny little niggle was there were 6 of us and the comfy seating in the front room is for 5 but this is so minor as there are other chairs you can bring in from the dinning area. Would be very happy to return to this property and tell friends about it. Great job done by the owners in providing a well maintained and tidy property for visitors to use. Although the apartment looked nice, we were extremely disappointed in some aspects.

First upon entering, it was freezing as no heating was on, it took most of the evening to get to a decent temperature. While unpacking we found a dirty towel stuffed in a bedside draw, and had to wash most kitchen items before use. The extractor fan didn’t work efficiently so cooking was extremely difficult as the kitchen would fill with either steam or smoking and we risked setting the fire alarm off. The biggest disappointment was noise. The windows despite being double glazed provided no protection from sound at all. While trying to watch tv, the sound of traffic drowned out the volume and made it impossible, if being considerate to our neighbours to watch anything. The amount of traffic going through the town at night was enormous. Consequently sleep was broken every night with the sound of deliveries being drag around on trollies, Lorrie’s bumping along the bad roads, conversations of people walking in the street etc. it was an absolute nightmare. I would not stay in this cottage again!

The cottage could best be described as ‘adequate’.

Not particularly clean and rather lacking in kitchen utensils (plates, bowls, cutlery etc.) There was no welcome pack, or information provided. I wasn’t aware that the field at the end of the track behind the cottage was out of bounds to people and dogs, but was abruptly informed of this by a very grumpy woman who accosted me as soon as I passed through the open gate. Information about this in the cottage would have been helpful. However despite this, we enjoyed our stay at Bea’s Cottage - the views at the front are lovely, the surrounding area is beautiful and perfect for great walks with our dog. Access to the front door of the property is difficult due to lack of pavement and a very busy main road, which made unloading and loading the car quite perilous. Bed was comfortable and plenty of clean towels and bedding provided. The local pub - The Lantern Pike was excellent. We enjoyed two meals here and the staff and regulars very friendly.
