What our customers say about their holidays

  • Lindsey - Verified booking

The cottage is easy to find in Wooler, located on a lane just off the High Street, & very well placed to explore the village and local area.

The key is in a key safe & we parked outside to drop our things off & collected the parking agreement left inside to park at the no.1 hotel just a few yards down the lane. its just at the rear of the cottage's garden. The little car park Is gravelly, but its not noisy or busy & wont disturb. The cottage was absolutely spotless, a credit to the housekeeper who actually lived opposite. It was very old fashioned and could really do with upgrading. but it was comfortable and cosy, and we were warm when we needed to be. Had a clean and well equipped kitchen with brand new teatowels & cloths etc and a lovely welcome pack for us and the furry boys. Potential for the dining room to possibly have a bed settee in it, as only 2 bedrooms upstairs ? Lots of books & information provided to read up on the history of the area and what to see and do etc. The settte was really comfy as was the mattress on the double bed, one of the best we've slept on. We were aware it was a double when we booked, but was too small for us. So we put the two singles together in the other room to make a twin, which is an option & more comfortable room. Personally, the duvets were too thin in here for me & i felt still needed warmer ones for mid April, additional linens were provided. Some repairs are needed I have emailed the owner about, who was lovely in all correspondence, so I hope he takes these well meant as intended. They will prevent deterioration & improve the property & make stays more comfortable. The patio was too overgrown to sit out on. I would suggest it is fully cleared at the top, so you have more room & can fully enjoy the table & this area of an evening. The lower garden was far too overgrown to use, though the owner had prior apologised that it had been a struggle to cut due to the weather at this time of year. The steps down to it would not suit someone with any mobility issues or young children as described. Lots of birds to see. The bathroom had a brand new shower mat & towels provided but its in here that could probably do with the most attention. all linens were spotless. We turned the heating up for an hour on an evening or morning if we needed to, which was easy to do. Thoroughly recommend the sunday dinner in the no.1 hotel, one of the best we've had. Also had an amazing italian meal in Milan & the sandwich shop makes gorgeous if pricey sandwiches and scones to take out on your travels. All in all, we had a lovely stay in York cottage. The church bells still ring out and chime each hour which is a lovely sound from the past not often heard now. We were blessed with dry bright weather & it was a great base to explore the cheviot villages and also not that far from the coast. We love Northumberland. It's a home from home for us. Its just a beautiful stunning area and York cottage gave us place to lie our weary heads at a very reasonable price as northumberland is becoming increasingly expensive, especially pet friendly.

Our disappointment is not specifically aimed at Sykes, but at the owner of York Cottage.

Mr Milburn probably labours under the illusion that everything is fine! Rubbish disposal was onerous - only one (small) receptacle in the whole house, and that was an ‘open’ bin in the kitchen not a peddle bin. Then we had to take the bag to a public street bin! Only one toilet roll supplied. All beds were most uncomfortable. The television was extremely poor quality and the freeview not fully functional. However the biggest concern relates to the heating. Our arrival was expected any time after 3pm, we arrived approximately 4.30. It was extremely cold and the heating control was still at 12 degrees! We immediately turned this to 23 degrees - it took THREE days to warm the whole house! The outside temperature on arrival was only 3 degrees, but a local resident was retained to manage and clean the property, so we expected that she would make sure the property was welcoming. Over many years we have rented holiday accommodation and never been as disappointed as we were with York Cottage.

The property was in a beautiful location- perfect for walking in the stunning national park with lots of trails to follow.

The house comfortable and modern with everything we needed and the dishwasher was a welcome addition. There were only two of us but plenty of space for a family of 4. The bedding and towels were very clean and it smelled really fresh as you walked in. The bed was enormous and so comfy- we slept like a log! 4/5 stars as it wasn’t perfect if I’m being picky- there were no coat hooks; the oven was coming out as we opened the door; the shower leaked which left a patch of damp; and some of the bathroom fixings were wobbly. Having said that, those really are niggles- the parking was great, staff were really friendly; the bed was enormous with a really comfy mattress; stunning views and all the facilities you need; beautifully clean towels and bedding; lovely clean kitchen and cooking facilities; a lovely, warm and cosy place; and the restaurant right on your doorstep. Beautiful place and would happily return and will recommend to family and friends.

The cottage was clean and tidy.

However, there is no 'over the bath shower' as in the description, only a rubber shower hose that does not fit on the taps. Someone from another cottage was parked outside the sitting room window of our cottage - we felt this intruded into our privacy. As a previous review said, there was only 2 mugs, glasses, etc, which meant you had to wash up a late evening drink in order to be ready for a cuppa in the morning. We felt that the towel radiator in the bathroom was dangerous - although there is a small sign saying that it is hot, I came away with 3 burns on my arms from putting things over the towel rail. The storage heater in the bathroom is impossible to use - it's right next to the toilet, so for any heat you need the towel rail on. For an older person, perhaps unsteady on their feet, there is a real risk of serious injury.

Positives: The cottage is well equipped and decorated, with a range of lovely pictures on all walls.

The double bed is extremely comfortable. The garden is very pleasant and would have been nice to use in better weather. The owner is kind and helpful, providing good local guides and calling before you stay. There's no parking outside, as made clear, but we parked round the corner as the suggested hotel car park nearby was always full. It's in a great location for local shops and countryside. Slight downsides: There was only one smallish bin for the whole house and the big mirror in the sitting room might be more use in the bathroom! A few cushions might add to the homeliness of the front room. The house was very cold downstairs, albeit in an unusually miserable June. The attractive garden could be improved even more with a little more weeding and some colour! There are poor recycling facilities in Wooler.
