What our customers say about their holidays

It was disappointing to arrive at 5pm (which is a very late check-in time) to find the house hadn't been cleaned.
We then tried calling the numbers on our booking form - one of which was out of order and the other was to a lady who no longer serviced the house. We had to search for another number to contact somebody and then arrange for a cleaner to come urgently. This meant we could not unpack or go shopping, as had been planned. We were told to go out for a meal and charge this to Northumberland Coast and Country Cottages, which was helpful. However, we then had to use the Sunday morning to go shopping and felt we had lost a night and morning of our holiday time. The cleaners did a good job of making the beds and bathrooms clean and tidy, but the general cleanliness of the house was below standard. There was dust under beds, on the stairs, old socks and cloths behind bedside cabinets and furniture. The dishwasher needed a deep clean as the dishes smelled terrible so we had to handwash all of the dishes (which for 10 people was a lot of work). There were baby cots/highchairs/potties all over the house, with nowhere to store them out of the way. The wardrobes in the master bedroom were filled with boxes and bags so there was very little room to hang clothes, and most of the wardrobes in the bedrooms didn't have hangers so clothes had to folded and put wherever there was space. The outside area was full of cobwebs and the artificial grass had debris all over it - which considering this is the first impression of the house was really disappointing. We ended up sweeping and cleaning and hoovering so that the house was clean for our guests who we had invited to share the time with us. I am still waiting for the reimbursement of our meal and the housekeeping bond, so will need to take time today to contact the company again, as I would have thought this would have been dealt with by now. Overall, I have paid nearly £3,500 for a week that did not meet my expectations at all. A very disappointed customer.

House was gorgeous and in a great location too.
The rooms were large and spacious with comfortable beds. Loved the open fire and the property had a large dining table with plenty of crockery and utensils. Large washing machine and dishwasher which was made full use of. Unfortunately did not get to use the hot tub and couldnât find any spare towels. On the negative side there only appeared to be a wardrobe in one of the bedrooms and a small rail in the other double room. The rooms were plenty big enough to take a wardrobe. The twin rooms just had a rail too which is not ideal as we were staying for a week. There were only 2 dishwasher tablets left and one toilet roll per bathroom. Due to accommodating 10 guests I expected to buy extras but thought more could have been left. Even though the lounge was spacious it couldâve probably taken another chair/two seater in order that we couldâve been a little more comfortable of an evening. We also asked for a cot which was available but did not appear to have any fixings to hold it together. We didnât ask for the high chair but I would have assumed they would have also made one available. Only minor issues which I am sure can be addressed. Due to our booking being over the Christmas period and we were cooking a full dinner we had requested a visit to the cottage prior to see what utensils etc were available. Maz very kindly met me there and showed us around which was very good of her. On the whole it was a beautiful house and we had an absolutely fantastic stay over the Christmas period. Would definitely recommend for a family gathering and also close to the train station for visiting Newcastle/Tynemouth etc. Would definitely stay again and we had a wonderful Christmas there.

On first entering, the cottage looked clean and welcoming; the welcome pack, baskets of towels & toiletries were much appreciated.
We enjoyed our stay very much much but offer the following small points for improvement which would make a big difference to what is a lovely house. Cleaning - It is a big house to clean and turn around between visitors but more attention needs to be given to cleanliness particularly under toilet seats which were dirty & under beds, sofas etc where we found sweets and other bits & bobs. Rubbish & recycling facilities - this really was inadequate with no access to bins beyond an instruction to leave bin bags in a certain place - there were 10 of us and over a week, generated a lot of rubbish which piled up and began to smell. Incidentally, on attending the local church service on the Sunday, we received a complaint from one of the neighbours about rubbish from the cottage filling up the bins which we did not even have access to. Maintenance- The downstairs toilet door needs better repair as it kept falling off the fittings (itâs a plastic concertina caravan type door); The gripper rods on stairs need attention - they poked through the carpet at the back of the steps and we had several skinned heels as a result; The gardens need attention beyond cutting the grass - borders and paths and the area around the hot tub need weeding because it just made the place look unloved. Some helpful additions would be enough wine glasses for 10 people (there were loads of pint glasses clearly relocated from the pub but only 6 wine glasses) and enough garden chairs for 10 people too. This is meant to be helpful feedback rather than a-complaint

We arrived to a freezing cold house as the thermostat had been turned off.
We turned the heating on when we arrived, but the radiators were just tepid. We had to sit under blankets on the sofa on the first evening and could see our breath as it was so cold! We expected that the heating would have kicked in by the following day, but there was still no improvement. The pans in the kitchen were also not fit for purpose as they were rusty and ruined the scrambled eggs we tried to make on Saturday morning. The shower upstairs was dirty and clogged with pubic hair. We had to clean this as well before we could use it. Sinks and baths were also dirty around the taps and also needed cleaning too. When we came back after a day at Beamish on Saturday evening the heating still was not fit for purpose and the hot tub water was green and smelly. This was very disappointing as the main reason we booked Prudhoe Cottage was as a treat for our granddaughter who has had a difficult year with type 1 diabetes and she never got to go in it. We called out the maintenance man who, to his credit, fixed the boiler, cleaned the hot tub and got us some new pans. Despite this we felt very disappointed as these things could and should have been sorted before we arrived and it ruined the start of the holiday for the rest of our family who were only there for two nights. We had no recycling bin either as described in the information book.

Pleasant holiday home which was a good base for us to explore the local area.
Lovely touch with a welcome gift and enjoyed the hot tub, (although some basic instructions would have been helpful). Would have been useful to have a few more hooks or a smaller airer inside for drying towels, and felt the instruction folder could have had a lot more information in it regarding local area/amenities, as well as WiFi password. Unfortunately we had no access to WiFi for the duration of the stay which with 2 teenagers was an inconvenience & while not the end of the world this did impact on trying to make plans for our time there. We arrived on a Sunday and contacted Skyes first thing Monday. They did not reply until Thursday afternoon and offered no apology for the delay and sent just a standard response which was not specific to Daisys retreat, suggesting that we check the router and/or ask at main reception which we had already done prior to contacting them. So while I would stay again at Daisys retreat, I would not book through Skyes cottages again for their very poor customer service.
