What our customers say about their holidays

  • Louise - Verified booking

Just finished a weeks stay in Porthmeor Beach House.

The house is in perfect location to the village and down the hill to Porthmeor Beach. This beach was great for surfing and bodyboarding. Also for a good sunset when the sky is clear. We were a a group of 9 + a baby. There was enough room for us all without stepping on each others toes. Downstairs the lounge has great views of the beach and hills. Enough sofa space and TV with plenty of channels for TV time (if you stay in a chill) The Kitchen was well equipped with enough of everything. There’s a coal BBQ outside which I don’t think is in the listing as we bought our own, so you won’t need to bring your own, just the coal. It’s a large one. Surface space in the kitchen for plating up was a little limited but we managed ok. There was also an iron and ironing board, mop and bucket, floor brushes, hoover, and rubbish bags as Cornwall provides these for the residents. There was a lovely ‘hamper’ on the dining room table which had tea, coffee, sugar, scones and clotted cream! Also some washing up essentials like cloths and tea towels. A few cleaning products also. Plenty of games kept at the property for all ages. The bedrooms were all of good sizes with enough storage space and a few hangers in each bedroom wardrobe. Hand towels and Body towels, these could be a bit bigger for those that like to wrap around or have a little more body to wrap. Bathrooms were provided with hand gel soap. Small outside area which isn’t pictured but if you bring bikes you could easily store. Some suggestions for improvement- first floor twin room in need of some damp treatment as there were a few patches on the ceiling where the paint is flaking off. The outside chairs on the balcony need replacing as they have cracked a bit and most likely won’t have much life left. Had to sit on them carefully. Mop and hoover were a bit smelly- I re cleaned the mop as it was damp in the cupboard, could do with a quicker drying mop head or cleaners to leave fresh one. Hoover filter could probably do with a clean to freshen it up. We had some Ants (big, winged and small) in the kitchen by the bins/ used the Ant powder in the cupboard around the bins but couldn’t work out where they were getting in. The Ant powder seemed to do the trick but the occasional big Ant was found. There was a crack in the outside (left side) wall which a lot of Ants were going in and out- we put a few kettle loads down this (sorry Ants) and I think this helped. The top oven microwave screen is very faint to the point one day we couldn’t see anything, so I think it’s about time for a new oven. (This looks like the same one from 2013 for sale listing) A couple of the single bed mattresses could do with replacing as they feel worn out and dip in places. Cleaning- this was overall fine and a bit of mould in bathroom on silicone is to be expected but maybe a once a month, a deep clean for everything would be beneficial as this does seem to be a ‘niggle’ that alot of people have mentioned. Sofas cleaned, skirting boards dusted, bottom of shower screens scrubbed to remove limescale and heavy bleaching on mould. This is something I would hope the agents and owners can pick up on for the above. Overall this hasn’t changed our opinion that the house is a lovely place to stay in a great location for 3 generations of family to enjoy. It would be a house we would stay in again, so please don’t let the negatives put you off. Also there’s 2 folders for handy tips, do’s and dont’s and the appliance manuals. We loved the fridge freezer too. Kids loved being able to have ice in their drinks… now to go home to a regular fridge. It has been a pleasure to visit St Ives and would recommend the walks and beaches around. We didn’t have great weather all week but it’s England in Cornwall. Either way it’s been lovely.

    Firstly, the positive: 1.

The location is ideal, being just a short walk to the lovely beaches and an equally short walk to the hubbub of the streets of St Ives. 2. Parking is ample enough to park 2 fairly large SUVs (Audi Q5 size, ish). 3. Loads of space inside to easily accommodate 6 adults in the front room, children watching TV (or gaming). 4. The kitchen dining area is large. 5. Toilet in first floor en suite was broken on arrival and was fixed temporarily on the Monday and fixed completely on the Wednesday. Good service from Sykes (although see also below). Needs improvement / be aware of: 1. The kitchen chairs are working loose and quite rickety 2. The front room has a mild smell of (rising?) damp 3. Kitchen is scruffy, poorly laid out and lacking simple basics like a garlic press, tongues 4. The bathrooms are not very clean - there is black mould in the showers, toilets badly stained (presumably through poor regular cleaning) 5. Paint is peeling off the ceiling in the first floor twin room, perhaps linked to a damp patch on the ceiling 6. There are no lined curtains/black out blinds so you’ll be up when the sun rises 7. The bed in the single room has broken slats 8. The beds in the first floor twin are tiny and uncomfortable 9. Wardrobe in top floor double is damp, with plaster falling off 10. Radiator in the main bathroom isn’t working and the bath plug was difficult to remove (we had to use a knife) 11. First floor en-suite toilet not working - how was this not identified by the cleaners? Sykes were difficult to reach over the weekend. 12. Worst of all… the house next door was being renovated with workmen arriving around 7am (on one day it was 6.50am), making noise immediately by taking in tools and equipment, hammering starting around 8am. Whilst not the direct problem of Sykes, they should have been made aware of this so we could have been informed. The balcony party wall had been removed, the builders used our balcony for their tools, there was debris from the roof renovation falling into our yard, which they did clean on the Thursday, but meant we couldn’t use the washing line). This did disturb every weekday morning of our holiday and, frankly, is completely unacceptable. In summary, it’s a great location but you’re paying 5* prices for 3* quality. It’s shabby, not properly clean and needs some investment. Definitely not worth the £3500 we paid for the week.

The property is comfortable and the rooms are clean and spacious for our family of seven.

The dining table was great for board games but also allowed meals to be set without the packing away. The ground floor bathroom and side entrance is ideal for when you enter the property with your dog. The cream tea hand made scones and dog treats was a kind welcome gift. The kitchen had all we needed to prepare meals though the knifes need sharpening and some of the ceramics were chipped. The property could do with double glazing you can feel a draft from around the window panes. Also the door in the dining room could do with a draft ceal. This was a real issue as when we arrived the first night we were not aware that the storage heaters had been turned off prior so the property was cold and the following day when we turned them on we had no heat, naturally we turned them up but then only found that we would wake in the night as the property had become unbearable hot. We reported to the caretakers over the weekend but did not get a response until Monday. We also raised our concerns that the hot water would only be on for the morning which when you have 7 occupants 3 teenagers that water would not last long and the only response we received was that a larger water tank had been requested from the owner. The Internet is a nightmare as it is only a mobile sim we ended up having to connect to a neighbors bt wifi as the connection kept dropping. The TV would not connect to any wifi I ended up buying a fire TV stick so that we could watch films in the evening. The garden is a good size but not enclose it would be fine but even though we abided to the sign on the gate to please close the gate, the neighbors on this plot I assume we're not the ones who installed this sign as they continued to leave it open. The short cut into the city was very useful and Truro is lovely, a nice selection of restaurants we enjoyed the cinema and would recommend if you like a welcoming retro environment. The house is a great base and would be ideal in great weather but when it's raining outside it lack our needs. We had a few other issues with a faulty light in the master bathroom and broken door knob in the kitchen but we're all rectified on the Monday by the caretakers.

We stayed at Mill House in May 2024 with my elderly parents and our four young children.

The bedrooms are a great size, two with ensuites and a main bathroom with bath. One double room also has a dressing room by the ensuite which has a single bed and room for a cot - which was perfect for our baby. There's also a door from this room out into the garden. The upstairs is lovely, with gorgeous wooden beams and an aga, which was lovely as it was a bit chilly. Plenty of seating and a small balcony for warmer mornings or evenings. Possibly the best equipped kitchen we've had during a UK stay too. The garden is gorgeous with views over the farm and fields of horses. If it had been warmer we would have enjoyed BBQs every evening and a cuppa on the deck in the morning. The garden is secure and our dogs were able to roam free - though we recommend supervision as one did get under the gate a few times. The owners and people at the farm we're incredible and made this holiday! They couldn't do enough and even drove me and the kids around the entire farm to meet the new calves and lambs. They got to feed lambs and calves every day with bottles as well as feed the chickens and collect eggs (which were available to buy too). My daughter got to help with some horses and even had a ride and jump (she's an expert rider). The location is great, 20 mins to the nearest beach, 30 mins to most others. We did some lovely coastal walks and the owners had great tips on eateries and places to go. We cannot recommend Mill House highly enough!

All in all this is a lovely property in a great location in Truro.

However, it just needs some tender loving care. When we arrived on a Saturday evening (and you cannot have access until 5.30 pm, yet must leave at 9 am the following Saturday which means that you really only have 6 full days) the house was stone cold. We called the caretaker Brian (who, along with his wife was very helpful) and he said that the storage heaters would come on overnight. They did, but it would have been nice if they had been put on the day before. Also, the towel rail in the en-suite didn’t work and the light and expelair in the en-suite was temperamental as well. The shower in the second upstairs bathroom also leaked into the kitchen which meant that from Thursday we had to stop using that bathroom. A lot of the mugs and plates were also chipped. On the plus side, there’s a garden for dogs (not completely enclosed though) and a back gate which cuts the walk to the town in half and provides access to a field to walk your dogs. As a base for Cornwall, it’s excellent, it just needs some work. Restaurant wise try The Rising Sun in Truro. Takeaway fish and chips from Sole Plaice and coffee at Lili’s. And if you are booking through Sykes Cottages to get BA Avios points, don’t bother because they will refuse to pay them. Use another booking site instead.
