We were a party of three adults staying at Lobstone Cottage. On arrival at this beautiful location it became instantly apparent that the cottage was VERY dirty! There were old undisturbed dusty cobwebs everywhere. The floors, including the carpet on the stairs, had not been vacuumed or it was a very poor attempt. There was dust, fluff & hairy tumbleweed-like balls all over wooden flooring & the shelf on the stairs where books etc are kept (all very dusty). The tiled kitchen floor was sticky & no one in our party felt comfortable walking around in bare feet. The cloth & sponge left for us to use in the kitchen were not new & had obviously been used by previous guests. As we didn’t know what previous guests might have used the cloth & sponge for, we went & bought our own to use. If you don’t want to put a new cloth out for every new guests stay (it was, after all, a disposable all purpose cloth) then maybe consider using a washable cloth that can be laundered so it’s fresh for each new guest. We had to clean the bath before using it as it was grubby! As for the bath mat, WOW! That thing looked older than our combined ages. The backing had disintegrated & was just rolling around in the mesh backing. No one was comfortable using it & we ended up going to Asda in Workington to buy a new one for £10. Maybe it’s time you do the same? The double bed makes a plank of wood seem comfy. Although the bedding itself was clean it belied the terrible nights sleep we had & was the main reason we all decided to leave a day early as we just wanted our own comfy beds. The grill in the oven didn’t work & nor did the towel rail in the bathroom. This is a basic old fashioned cottage in an amazing location but just needs a really good deep clean. I question what we actually paid the service charge for. We could have spent time cleaning things ourselves but we were on holiday. It doesn’t matter how old a building is, there is no excuse for lack of cleanliness. We did try to contact Cottages.com chat service to raise these issues but discovered that the office was closed & there was no out of hours service. We didn’t want to waste any more time chasing these issues up when we were supposed to be enjoying our holiday. It’s such a shame that we had these issues & they were all totally avoidable had attention to detail been given to both the cleaning & regular checks of equipment.

A lovely little cottage in a fabulous location. Good access to walking routes in stunningly beautiful Bortowdale. Nice village location with the hotel across the road welcoming patrons and a little farm shop selling local specialities and basic provisions.
