Self-Catering York Cottages

From spacious and modern apartments in the heart of York city centre to cosy historic hideaways a hair’s breadth from the Yorkshire Moors, if you’re planning a holiday to York and the surrounding region, there are lots of stunning properties too choose from. Looking for a pet-friendly option or a spacious dwelling comprising all modern conveniences ideal for dog-friendly holidays in York? Or self-catering accommodation with a hot tub for a bubbly York hot tub break? You can’t beat the luxury and convenience of holiday cottages in York.

A medieval town steeped in history, the winding streets that characterise historic York are like nothing else. This stunning northern city boasts a wealth of cultural and historic landmarks, from 13th century walls to the magnificent York Minster cathedral. In Roman times York was the capital of Britain and the city’s long and prestigious heritage is everywhere you look. And you will feel rather prestigious yourself as you enjoy a memorable stay in an idyllic York cottage.

Things to do when you stay in York Cottages

It’s a cliché, but a visit to York really is like stepping back in time. While other cities have morphed and changed to keep up with the modern age, there are parts of the city centre that have remained untouched for nearly two millennia. York’s historic highlights are too numerous to mention beyond the famous York Minster, but include the remains of York city walls, the Roman fort of Eboracum and the medieval street named the Shambles; a definite must visit. There are many more of York’s treasures on display in York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Our Guide Destination disconnect: The top UK towns for a digital detox revealed York as one of the top 5 locations in the country with the highest number of local attractions to keep visitors engaged and off their phones.

York is a hugely popular city break destination, so you’ll find plenty to see and do as you meander through the ancient streets, including top drawer shops, cafés and restaurants serving hearty, traditional fare. But, make sure you head away from York city centre and the tourists to discover some of the most breath-taking natural landscapes in the whole country, including North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Coast. Don’t forget to pack those walking boots, and a camera!

York cottages are the perfect self-catering accommodation if you’re looking to stay in this historic city, giving you the freedom and flexibility to explore, and packed with character. York cottages are your own little hideaway in easy reach of all the main landmarks – making an amazing family holiday that you’ll remember forever. Perhaps you're looking for a cosy holiday cottage within easy reach of York's Chocolate Story, or a York holiday cottage that is perfectly located a stone's throw from York Minster?

Q. Is York a popular place for family holidays?

A: Our booking data suggests that York is less popular with families compared to the coastal towns in North Yorkshire like Whitby and Scarborough.

Q. Is York a good place to take your dog on holiday?

What our customers say about their holidays

  • Danielle - Verified booking

Sykes Staff have been nothing but friendly and accommodating, they were not to fault for our unsatisfactory stay.

The property however had dust webs left in corners (despite cleaners) and offered no QR code/Covid guidelines, no antibacterial hand wash or sanitiser (good job we took our own). We were greeted by a wasps nest by the front door obviously using the property’s roof. The door with its large double glass windows offered no privacy from passers by using the shared drive and communal laundry room given the fact the shower and toilet were right behind it which resulted in us having to hang a towel over the door. The pictures of the garden were misleading. It clearly shows a grass area which had been cordoned off and belonged to another property which only left the stoned area you see in the pictures which would have been fantastic if it weren’t for the fact they are not friendly to the paws of our fury friends which meant our pet friendly get away wasn’t in fact so pet friendly at all and his off lead play time went out the window. The directions to the property are not clear, even using ‘what four words’ we had difficulty. In the end we were forced to contact Sykes which then had to contact the owners who added another couple of steps to the directions. Frankly if it weren’t for the fact we had to rely on a family member for travel and our signal was so spotty we never would have stayed.

A quiet and relaxing holiday in a well equipped property.

We did one or two local walks but excess to the castle ruins in the village is not allowed for obvious reasons. You will know when you see them, however you can circumnavigate them. There are two pubs in Sheriff Hutton but the Castle Inn a few 100 yards away is now closed for the foreseeable future. The Highwayman does a really good Sunday Lunch but we didn't try the pub in the week, cooked a few meals in the cottage. A one woman taxi service exists in the village, see the local magazine. At the end of the road near the Highwayman is a really good cafe, it is called Quarmby's, we highly recommended it for a tasty treat and coffee. Openings, Wednesday. thought to Sunday. The cottage was comfortable and we slept well in a large bed, there is plenty of wardrobe and draw space. No problems with the facilities as there is a folder provided with all the information needed. The internet and mobile signals are good. No major problems, the owner is only a text or call away and is very helpful. I would like take this opportunity to thank her for the food, milk and beverages she provided on our arrival.

Yew Tree Cottage is a lovely property in a quiet village location.

It feels remote but is in fact not far at all from larger villages and towns with amenities. The property itself is perfect for two and was particularly cozy with the wood burning stove. The weather was not brilliant during our stay so a fire in the evening was very welcome. The kitchen was fully equipped but was lacking in preparation space for meals as the available counter space was already occupied by the kettle, toaster and microwave. This was only a small inconvenience though as meals were simple or we were eating out. The only other comment I would make concerns the pictures on the walls. While beautifully decorated and styled, we found it very odd that the pictures on the walls were of insects. With such beautiful countryside around it would have been really lovely to see some local landscapes or places of interest (perhaps an old map of East Riding or a painting of York Minster) on the walls instead. This is not a complaint but simply an observation and suggestion. The cottage is a really lovely property and we very much enjoyed our stay at Yew Tree Cottage. Thank you.

We were very pleased with Yew Tree Cottage.

This is our first time of staying in a cottage and we weren't disappointed, we were pleased with the condition which was very clean and welcoming. The owner Gill lived next door and popped round to see us during our week's stay to check everything was to our satisfaction. We were pleased to say it was. We did mention that a coffee table and a tray would be useful and within a few minutes Gill popped back with both items. Very impressed. We would definitely recommend this cottage which is situated in a lovely quiet village. There are places of interest that we enjoyed visiting, such as the walks, particularly in the local park which took you through to North Cave, a local Farm Shop and restaurant called Drewtons, a Nature Reserve called "Wetlands" and we also liked touring around the local villages. The local pub called the Hotham Arms is well worth a visit and is in within walking distance. We also enjoyed the Dog and Duck in nearby Walkington, another lovely village. All in all, a very relaxing time. We shall return in the future.

    The cottage was a delight.

The welcome pack was a really nice touch and the homemade jam was gorgeous. The cottage was very clean throughout and the cleaner deserves to be personally thanked. The cottage was spotless. We loved the shower and the rear garden sitting out area. The bed was very comfortable and we had very restful nights. We loved the wooden shutters and the wood burner. We used it once on one chilly evening, but didn't need any wood. Burning the coal that was made up for us, was enough to take the chill away for an hour or so before bedtime. We understood that the cottage had access rights through the neighbours garden (like we do at our own home), but we didn't need to use that rear access. The weather was really good for our holiday break and our dog's feet were cleaned up and dried with towels (provided) at the front of the house. People in the village were very friendly, especially the young man in the stone house to the left beyond Ascot.
