What our customers say about their holidays

This was my fourth stay at River Cottage and as always the village of Calstock and River Cottage never fails to impress.
Thanks to Paula and Emma for always keeping a clean and tidy cottage. Since my last visit, pre-Covid I did notice some changes in the Village, all for the good, with the Social Club & Village Hall seeming that much more busy & well used and people in general waterfront. Though the noise from the music & customer drinking outside the Social Club could be heard from inside the cottage, on the Friday & Saturday evenings, this did not go beyond 11.00pm, so unless you go to bed before this time should not be an issue. It was also fascinating to see the Flood defences which have been constructed along the River towards the Okel Tor Mine. One comment (niggle) is that whilst on previous visit we had noticed noise from the neighbours property which backs onto & is above the lounge, this year it was louder than had been previously. Most evenings, even with the TV on in River Cottage, you could still hear the TV from the neighbours and other loud sounds which started from early afternoon into the evening. Also whilst a personal choice would suggest if you normally sleep with a soft or medium pillow you may wish to take your own as the pillows in all the rooms are particularly firm. In addition a word of warning, we arranged for a food delivery from Tesco on the evening of our arrival and ten minutes before it was due to be delivered, without any prior warning, recâd a text message to advise that due to a âsystem problemâ there would be no delivery. So you might be best to do a supermarket shop in Tavistock before you arrive in Calstock.

The accommodation was listed as a 6 person apartment with parking.
The accommodation itself was great, very comfortable and thoughtfully prepared. However our visit was spoiled by the parking. Parking is clearly an issue at this location and we were pestered by neighbours constantly asking about cars (not ours) parked in 'the wrong place'. We have a large car (one that accommodates 5 people, as I imagine most people renting this accommodation will have) and we really struggled to park it in the given slot. We were reliant on the neighbour parking her car well over in her slot in order to be able to get out of the car once parked, meaning if she hadn't done that we would have not been able to access the car. I know there is little that can be done about the size of the car port slot, but I think the description should indicate that the space is for a small car, and not a people carrier or SUV, which is frankly the most likely vehicle that a family of 5 or 6 will have. We were told by the landlady to park in the Dentist parking slot, but this is only available at the weekend. During the week of our stay there was then no parking. This really ruined our holiday, and I see that other visitors have raised this. Had I known that parking was going to be a problem I would have booked elsewhere. The neighbours were very nice, but we met all five of them and they were asking about the parking all of the time. Hassle for them, and hassle for us. Not a holiday!

This cottage was very well cared for and equipped.
It has been renovated and decorated to a high standard and felt very nice to stay in. Everything had been thought through and organised to make it a really lovely place to stay. It was bigger than I was expecting and our family of 5 didnât feel squashed or in each others way. We really enjoyed our weeks holiday and would highly recommend it - there is a lot to visit in the area - we had lots of walks on Dartmoor, visited Tavistock pannier market, Cothele house, Buckland Abby. The owners have pub a map on the wall, with recommendations for walks, activities and rainy day activities - this was really appreciated. I read some reviews about the pub noise - there was a band at the social club until 11pm on Saturday evening, but it didnât disturb us, fortunately. The pub was closed, so I canât comment. I took ear plugs, just in case, but they werenât necessary. Overall, it was a really lovely cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Thank you to the owners, who have obviously put a lot of work into making it a lovely place to stay.

An excellent week's stay at Riverside and just about to book again for next year.
Initially, when we arrived we were slightly surprised that areas in the kitchen and cloakroom were not as clean as expected - but a short burst of activity soon resolved things. It almost looked as though it had not had a proper clean before our arrival - we were the first booking of 2022 we understand. However, that exception apart, a new en-suite bathroom had just been put in, and everything else about the apartment was magnificent. A perfect position, easy access to the town and all places of interest in the locality with lots of great walks. Foodies Cafe is great, also Asquith's for a lovely evening meal, as was The Crown at Lanlivery. We loved the view over the river from the lounge, also the view over the railway from the kitchen. We slept incredibly well too. All in all, a great place for a week out of season.

This is a well appointed cottage, well equipped, clean and well thought out.
The kitchen had all we needed and I was impressed that there were two fridges as I generally find that holiday cottages do not have enough fridge space. Just add a towel rail for the tea towel and hand towel please. We had plenty of hot water , the broadband was reliable, the beds and sofas were comfortable. Contrary to others we had perfect mobile signal; we use Vodafone. There was some late night noise from the Social Club, particularly on Saturday. The Tamar Inn keeps its real ale in superb condition & the ice cream shop has excellent ice cream. The cottage is well situated for trips to Dartmoor the coast and Plymouth. The train service and local buses provide good links to Plymouth, Tavistock & the surrounding area.
