What our customers say about their holidays
Marie - Verified booking
I didnât write a review as soon as we got back as I wanted to reflect and give a balanced assessment.
Firstly I would say that whilst this is a characterful cottage with plenty of space itâs not what Iâd call âstunning â. There are two nice wood burners and although there was a basket of logs there was no kindling or fire lighters, so we had to buy them. There were plenty of fresh clean towels although one of the bath towels had holes in it. All the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen and dining area were very spacious and reasonably well equipped but the fridge was small and the door rack was missing so, as many other reviews have said milk bottles etc had to be stood on the shelf which took up so much room it was difficult to store other chilled foods and we were forever packing and unpacking to get stuff in and out. It was a real pain! On arrival the host was at pains to point out that the house had suffered a serious leak the previous winter and there was some damp in a corner of the kitchen so it couldnât be decorated. Reasonable I suppose but there were several other damp patches throughout the house and to be honest the whole property could benefit from a lick of paint and a bit of tlc. There were lots of cobwebs in all the rooms and inside the windows, several with spiders in residence and the ceiling above the bookcase in the living was flaking with flakes of paint covering the furnishings below. The top floor bathroom had no radiator or hooks so nowhere to hang a robe or damp towels which meant we had to drape them over the rails/bannisters at the top of the stairs. The laminate floor in the bathroom was chipped and swollen in places. There was however plenty of hot water. The hot tub was not ready for use on our first day and when we came back to the cottage on our last full day we found the owner had changed the water for next occupants and it was in the process of reheating so we were unable to use it again. This meant that instead of having use of it for 7 nights we only had 5. When we asked him about this he was quite rude implying that it was our fault which I found offensive. We did not overuse it and always showered first and followed all instructions diligently. The hot tub did seem quite old and half the jets didnât work, I spoke to the owner about this and he seemed quite surprised although I note that a previous visitor had complained about this same issue several months earlier. He said he would look at it but never got back to me and the fault was never rectified. There was no complimentary wine or chocolates which I wasnât too bothered about but the pictures showing this are misleading and it is unusual in holiday cottages for the owners not to leave their guests a small gift. I noticed a lot of guests mentioned the roosters waking the at all hours, I have to say that they never disturbed us at all and we enjoyed hearing them and having them around. As others have mentioned there was a lack of cleaning materials which if you are asking guests to leave the property clean I feel should be provided rather than guests having to buy them themselves. I must have stayed in at least 30 holiday cottages mostly in the lakes and Highlands so know what to expect and overall this fell well short of expectations.

Combe Cottage was a great place for what we paid.
I was central for lots of places such as the Lakes, the beaches and the Miner's Arms was two doors away. It was really clean and decorated well. The beds were comfortable apart from the second bedroom which was only really suitable for children as the beds were quite small. The kitchen is tiny and has no worktop space, even to wash up and drain. In fairness though there is a dishwasher. The parking could be an issue in busy times as the neighbours tend to hog the space. You either have to park down the road outside someone else's house or, if you are friendly, ask the pub if you can park on their car park. The neighbours do not appear to want to converse. The highlight for us was the lovely people around here. Silecroft is a small hamlet and most people are really friendly. The Miner's Arms is a lovely place to make friends and Ryan and his Dad were very welcoming. It's a shame that the place is up for sale. My husband loved it there as they have lovely ale and he could watch football. The beach is just down the road. It is lovely and quiet and has a free car park, lovely ice cream and you can sit there on the benches and while away the hours. The lakes are nearby and are amazing. The coast is lovely and this lovely little house is a bargain! Stairs are steep but they make that clear in the description. Outdoor space at the back has no privacy and is limited. I would not trust my dog to not jump over the wall. All in all we had fab weather and a good experience, but this was mainly due to lovely people and lovely country side.

Gorgeous property, really picturesque, rustic house and very stylish.
Facilities were excellent, bedrooms and bathrooms were all lovely. Common areas were both spacious and comfortable. Really can't fault the way the place has been set up. The private back garden was excellent and the perfect spot for the hot tub. Ample parking for four cars. Honestly the only minor niggles I can bring up were: The kitchen was a bit under provisioned with regards to cooking utensils and pans/bakeware, similarly there wasn't sufficient cleaning products. So cleaning up before we left was a bit more of a task than it should have been. The hot tub was only warming up when we got there and was unusable on the first night, given that we only had two days there, this felt like we'd been a bit short changed on that front, as had it been cleaned earlier we'd have been in it straight away Friday night. Finally there wasn't a welcome pack (that we could find) with all information included, I had to reference emails and the original listing to identify everything we had to do before leaving, really minor this but if this information was simply printed out and left somewhere obvious that would have been really helpful. However, even with the minor issues we had, I can still very highly recommend this property and would happily revisit in the future. It was very comfortable, really stylish and pretty, and thoroughly good value.

We had a wonderful stay here, itâs a real âhome away from homeâ.
We would stay here again as it has everything you need and is very comfortable and easy with our two children. We did have a couple of niggles on arrival as it had been empty for some time and so there were a few cobwebs in high places and some dust around. Under the beds, sofas and bedside cabinets hadnât been hoovered so we had to do this ourselves. We mentioned this on arrival, and also because the toilet flush had broken (it was fixed within a couple of hours) and also the WiFi didnât work for the duration of our stay. We were told that there was an oversight with it being empty for some weeks, so hopefully these issues were a one-off. It also would have been really helpful to have had some milk or something on arrival as there is no longer a shop in the village. Other than the niggles, we really had a pleasant stay, everything else was super clean and comfortable, lovely and warm and we never ran out of hot water. The loft room is fab for the kids to have their own space and the kitchen has everything you could need for a few meals. We will definitely stay again the next time we visit our family.

Beck Cottage has a lovely layout, with a cosy atmosphere which was enhanced by a charming wood burning stove, perfect for relaxing evenings, which we booked as a last minute little pick me up after illness before Christmas.
However the stay was unfortunately overshadowed by a few issues. The cottage on closer inspection wasnât very clean. There was dusty surfaces, a large amount of cobwebs, toothpaste on a tap and mould under the bath taps. Later during the stay we found a finger nail and food down the back of the sofa. Additionally the sink had broken plumbing which meant that after a couple of water leaks we couldnât really use for it for five out the the seven days. Whilst we appreciate that it was over the New Year period you would have thought that an emergency plumber could have been utilised. Although permission was given to the hosts to enter the property to check the plumbing on one day, we were concerned that the day after someone had entered the property and turned some lights out that we purposely left on to help us navigate up the path in the dark when we returned from a day out, which was unsettling and intrusive. Whilst Beck Cottage is in a great position and had the potential for a really great stay, the lack of maintenance, cleanliness and lack of privacy detracted from the overall experience.
