What our customers say about their holidays
Jean - Verified booking
The positives.
It was a nice touch with eggs, flowers and milk on arrival. Clean towels and bedding. Comfy living room and bed, and a good supply of tea, coffee, and sugar and cleaning materials. The location is great for scenery and there is loads to do round about once you drive the six miles to the main road which leads to Fort William to the right. We rated the stay as a 5 star, as we had an amazing weeks holiday, this was nothing to do with the chalet. Negatives Don't be fooled by the photographs, these must have been taken when the property was new. The property is very tired and in desperate need of updating and maintenance. The accuracy of the listing is false, as there was no working freezer, which to be fair we were contacted about the week before. I do feel however, this has not been working for some time, and has not just broken, as the door on the freezer didn't shut either. The coffee machine listed is an old Tassimo in a cupboard, we did not use this, as it looked as though it had been there for years. The toilet seat in the main bathroom is hanging off and hits you in the back when you sit on it. As this was the case we used the toilet in the en-suite whilst we were there. The shower in the main bathroom does not fasten to the wall, so this could not be used as a shower, other than hand held. The bath panel is also not well fitted and there is a crack in the bath. The shower in the en-suite, kept altering in temperature when being used, although no other taps etc, were being used. The cooker hood was really greasy and makes an horrendous noise and the boiler also makes some odd noises, maybe this needs a service? There is no carbon monoxide monitor in place. There was no fuel for the fire, (as advertised). Nothing has PAT stickers on, so does not give faith to the fact that any of the electrical equipment has had the necessary safety checks completed. The wall lamp in the bedroom when switching this on fell off the wall and my husband had to fasten this back on before it could be used. I could go on, as there were more issues, however, overall the place does need a deep clean and some major maintenance, which we are lead to believe is planned. It was not worth what we paid for it and we had booked this very well in advance for our 35th wedding anniversary, expecting this to be more like the photos we had seen. We did have a lovely weeks holiday and enjoyed all Fort William and the surrounding areas had to offer, not letting the accommodation spoil our stay.

First time I have stayed at Ardlochan cottage but iv been coming to Culzean since the 80âs as a child and iv stayed in all the rentable cottages on the estate.
Itâs a lovely cottage inside and out. Itâs a lot bigger inside than the others. The underfloor heating is a lovely bonus. The outside back garden is private from view as you do have visitors/walkers go by as itâs so near to the beach. Handy to also have a drive for your car so itâs easier to unpack/pack. Other cottages have a bit of a walk from the car park spaces. Other visitors who have left reviews about the hot water are correct. There does seem to be an issue with the hot water if you have multiple baths/showers one after another as the water goes from hot to cold. We got around this issue being a party of 4 (my parents in their 60âs and my son) having morning or evening showers to let the water heat up again. I didnât find a problem with the wifi. I know others have commented on this. I logged into the cottage wifi. Password can be found in the black cottage file. I was able to connect my iphone and my kindle fire to access the internet, order something online and upload photos to social media in the kitchen/living area. The signal was weaker in the twin bedroom and outside which is to be expected. The back garden is a sun trap on the right day. We were lucky enough to be able to experience this. There is a lot of wildlife in the garden which is lovely to watch. The only issue with the garden is itâs not 100% fenced which might put some people off but it is stated on the information about the property that this is the case and that dogs might escape. We didnât have an issue with our dog escaping but we did have a dog access the garden and try to come into the property, this didnât happen as our dog saw to that. Obviously this wasnât ideal as we had a 2.5yr old and our own dog. Itâs very quiet and 2 minutes from the beach. Itâs near to a lovely wood and the children's outdoor play area and swan pond. Itâs a bit of a walk if you have younger children or elderly to the cafe and visitor centre compared to some of the other cottages. But it was perfect for our party as my son loves to walk. My parents said itâs their favourite cottage on the estate and would love to stay here again due to the size of the cottage and the outside space. Overall an amazing stay in a beautiful setting/cottage which has so many positives. We will definitely be back soon.

East Lodge, Ardwell, is a delightful location for a relaxed holiday. The lodge is comfortable and pleasantly fitted out and for our purposes it provided all that we desired for a very enjoyable visit. It is in a relatively isolated position so on our way to the property we collected sufficient provisions to be self catering although there is a very good restaurant about a mile away. As we were visiting in November, we anticipated cold weather and thoroughly enjoyed having a wood fire in the evenings as well as having the central heating at other times. The beds were very comfortable and warm, the living/dining room allowed us splendid coastal views, and the kitchen was well kitted out for us to prepare whatever meals we fancied and looked into the garden with its bird feeders which were eagerly used by several bird species as well as a number of the local red squirrels - great entertainment. The 'Murder stone' just alongside the garden was an interesting feature and is explained in the lodge information folder. It was great to explore the estate of Ardwell House and there are numerous obvious paths which can be followed. Although we were out of season and the walled garden was closed, the estate gardener did open the gate for me to view the garden. Several marked paths direct one to interesting parts of the estate and Ardwell Church is a lovely building and from there one can do a cross country walk to Ardwell village and the coast. Wildlife along the coastal mudflats is abundant and the coastal sunrises were often spectacular. The lodge is a perfect location to explore the Mull of Galloway and the Rhins Peninsula and it is well worth visiting some of the historical sites signposted locally as well as the local towns and gardens. At different times of year the rhododendron displays would be fantastic and we certainly have intentions of returning in the near future.

Good location. Easy access to most points of interest as long as you have a car. Mull of Galloway, Port Patrick, Logan Gardens, Galloway Forest Park/Dark Skies, Kirkudbright, Bladnoch Distillery all within up to 90min drive. Nearest major supermarkets at Stranraer 30 min drive. Public transport is at approx. 150 mins intervals until 19:00 and not always on time. Taxi's can be 30+ minute waits. Excellent pub/restaurant in the Tigh-na-Mara at Sandhead 3 miles north of Ardwell on bus route. Handy general store for essentials (McKenzie's) also in that village. (nothing of that nature in Ardwell itself). Accommodation is very good. Loads of character, good size rooms for a couple. Warm in summer/autumn. Open wood/coal fire a nice comforting touch. Used twice on raining days after long walk. Plenty of hot water on demand. Peaceful grounds on Ardwell Estate to walk in. The lake especially. The road outside is the only thorough fare into the area. Traffic can be heard during day/evening (no double glazing/listed building I expect), but you get used to it. Sun trap on the decking up to 15:30 in Sept. Lots of wildlife to watch. Including an unidentified visitor from the woods at the rear, several early mornings testing the cat flap on the rear door. Luce Bay makes for a good place to walk/sit quietly in the sun, with stunning view. Good communication from owners. No Wi-Fi, radio (brought our own - although stations available on the Freeview TV) iron, shaver socket (bring a 3-pin to 2-pin adapter for electric toothbrush) or washing machine (kitchen small but easily useable with all essentials), otherwise would give 5 stars.

Lovely cottage in a fantastic location, with the beach just a short stroll away and the whole of the Culzean Estate to explore.
This was itâs saving grace as unfortunately the facilities and welcome were severely lacking; it felt like camping at times! On arrival, the cottage was freezing cold as all the windows had been left open. We were also without power for 6 hours on the second day, meaning no hot water for the power shower and no way of cooking as the oven and hub are electric. The beds and sofas were all extremely uncomfortable and there was no rug in the living area so it was hard to find somewhere comfortable to relax. Pictures and other home comforts seemed to have been removed, making it feel very basic indeed. Sadly, we didnât feel very welcome: only very basic information was provided, there was no welcome pack, no starter logs for the woodburner and no details of where to buy them, not even a pint of milk or single teabag to make a drink when we arrived. The kitchen was also lacking basic essentials such as handwash, washing up liquid, foil/cling film, bin bags, not even any kitchen scissors! It felt like the emphasis was entirely on COVID safety and that we were an inconvenience for wanting to stay there. Such a shame as it really is a beautiful location
