  We had a great week-long stay at the Captain's View, which turned out to be a perfect choice for us as wanted a seaside 'feel', a convenient location for transport, but also somewhere that was convenient for parking (as we were heading to France afterwards and had quite a bit of luggage with us). The flat is on the same level as the road / parking so it's effortless to get in and out. The house is on the edge of Ilfracombe - in fact as you drive in from out of town (from the southeast) you're on a country road and then the house is suddenly there, among other period properties (and at night owls join the seagull chorus). It's true that it's a long walk up the hill from town, so do take this into account - but this is often part and parcel of staying in seaside towns in the south-west. We ended up walking all the SWCP stages from Lynmouth to Barnstaple, taking advantage of local buses most days, and this was a great base; we really enjoyed our meals in the well equipped kitchen, looking out to sea (N Wales visible most days) and the Iron Age hill fort.

  The room has the most spectacular views of Lynmouth.

  Gillian is a very nice welcoming lady who makes you feel as though the place is your own without any petty rules and regulations. I would highly recommend this place for anyone who likes walking as it is situated half way up the hill between Lynton and Lynmouth so whichever way you go you will be going uphill either on the way out or on the way back. It is a good base for driving to places like Ilfracombe and Woolacombe and Minehead. Best meal of the week was at the Blue Ball on the road out of Lynmoth really first class. Access to the property is up a narrow driveway not suitable for very large vehicles, my Jaguar S type was probably close to the limit for size. Over all this is a lovely place and I would highly recommend.

  The apartment needs a complete renovation, the bathroom is very outdated and there is no where to dry the towels also there was no bathroom cleaning materials available.

  Very limited utensils in the kitchen and very limited space inside the lounge area. Seating was uncomfortable also. Wardrobe sliding doors grated when opened and was very noisy. Loose floor boards in bedroom area when you get into bed and in front of the wardrobe. The internal stairs were very high and quite difficult for me as an older person,especially when carrying luggage etc up and down. But the views were great and the host was a lovely lady. Car parking was very tight and the access road was very narrow and difficult to turn into from the road.

  We took the apartment for two weeks along with the house.

  The apartment is accessible from the house but access is only available if a door is unlocked. In the apartment you are totally independent and unaware of the house. The owner was very nice and very helpful while the apartment itself was very spacious, clean, comfortable, and well equipped. It is ideal whether for one or two people or used as an annexe to the main house. Delightful location - yes the track to it is bumpy but easily managed either on foot or in a car.We never experienced any problem in the two weeks that we stayed there.
