What our customers say about their holidays
Rachel - Verified booking
From the photos it looked like a typical mass market holiday challet and we expected that it would be fine, clean and functional and perfectly adequate for a short break as a base to tour.
When we arrived the site strongly marketed it as a luxury holiday home for a disabled person. That changed our expectations and left us feeling utterly annoyed as it was basic, not that well maintained, pretty impracactical and not in any way luxury and not suitable for a person with a disability except that it was on one level. However, when I re read Sykes' property description on my return home, it was accurate and had only given 3 stars which was fair. It was very attractively set in a private dip in the wooded valley. We enjoyed sitting out in the evening, alhtough it was next to an unmaintained area of weeds and deteriorating decking and damaged steps up to the lodge. The beds were comfortable and the bedding clean and fresh, the fabrics were nice in the unit and it was nice to be able to order food if we wanted it. Other than that it was not great. The kitchen provision was very basic and minimal, with a low powered microwave, cracked ceramic hob, feeble extractor and all quite cramped, especially the dining room table. The toilet was not pleasant being directly off the living room and facing the door and the floor got dirtly easily and was not cleanable. There were insufficinet surfaces to put toiletries on or have contact lens or toothbrushing facilities on hand, few places for 3 people to hang wet towels and the fittings were a bit rusty. There was one bin and no provision for recycling in the cabin. We only found out that there was recycling as we were leaving by which point it was too late. The guest information was not that usefull it was more of a marketing pack for luxury accommodation. It would have been helpful to have a sweeping brush to get rid of the sand inevitably picked up from being on the beach. My daughter got a splinter from playing in the playground as child friendly bark had not been used and the windows of a cabin running along the path opened out onto the path a head height of my daughter and a risk for passers by to walk into. My husband mislaid his keys and asked reception to lock the cabin for us whilst we were away that day. They said they would but forgot and it was unlocked when we returned at the end of the day. We also did not have hot water one of the days. It was definatley not quality - basic equipment, small TV's, cheap fittings, neglected bathroom, no wi-fi except a the bar etc and not for a disabled person who having wheeled themselves in would have to navigate oddly shaped carpet edges then would not be able to reach the pegs to hang their coat, no seating to use the shower and good luck with the WC! - not the welcome I would want if I were a wheelchair user. These comments are only applicable to the owner though as Sykes do not say that it is luxury and do not say it is for a disabled person.

Rock view shepherds hut is one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed!
We did not want to leave! As soon as you walk down the path on your first day, you are greeted by trees, the hot tub, pond, fire pit and birds singing. Whatâs not to like! Nick and Karen communicated well with us leading up to our stay, and Nick showed us around the hut when we arrived. He checked the hot tub for us half way through the holiday (which we enjoyed 6/7 nights we stayed) and even suggested local hot spots including the nearest beaches. We were amazed with the creative storage space in the hut (lots of room under the dining room seating for coats, shoes etc) with plenty of kitchenware such as pots, pans and even Tupperware which came in handy for our sandwiches when out walking. Little extras in the drawers included a torch, first aid kit and washing up bits etc. this all makes a difference! Good shower with plenty of power and hot water. Towels provided for shower and hot tub. Large and super soft. It is cosy inside the hut, only needing to use the log fire once. There is a heater in the cupboard if you get cold, plus a nifty little hoover which came in handy. The outside area is simply magic!!! Sitting in the hot tub after a day of exploring was bliss. We both felt relaxed after using it. Probably our favourite bit about the accommodation. We did not realise how close it is to Tamar trails, which makes a lovely walk. Here is where I spotted a deer. Lots of squirrels to watch, which made great entertainment whilst sat in the hot tub. Honestly, if you want to get away from the world and feel relaxed this is the place to go. Your be amazed at how spacious the shepherds hut is. We were surprised to get 4G in the area, which came in handy for wanting to check out local areas. But if you donât get signal, Nick and Karen have organised a fab folder full of local places to visit. Thank you for a wonderful stay. We would now like to buy and live in a shepherds hut⦠We will be back asap!!

After a couple of very busy, stressfull years and not having any breaks for a few years, i just needed to switch off from the world for a much needed re-charge/re-fresh.
Rock view hut was the perfect brain tonic i needed, very secluded and private set in a beautiful woodland, as a lone traveller i was a little hesitant being there alone, but after the first night in the hut i knew this was just perfect for me. There is much to do nearby (a short drive) to cater for all tastes. I did venture out on one of the days and I can recommend the "Avon Dam" walk at "Dartmoor national park" very impressive. My day normally consisted of having a lay in till 10am ish, cooking a breakfast (sometimes on firepit grill) lazing on the hammock (so comfy),short walks in the immediate vicinity, I drove to local shops a couple of times 3-4 miles away for essentials, but mainly just stayed at the hut and switched off, not worrying about makeup or outfits, this really was a perfect break and i will return for sure,(maybe in autum) Karen and Nick are very friendly and helpful and only a short distance away if needed, quickly answering any queries i had whilst there, after arrival Nick gave me a quick tutorial on how to use/heat the hot tub, which is very easy to use and i used it at least once per day, normally used it late at night, just laying back and looking at the stars, (pure bliss) with a G & T in hand, i did have 2 days of unsettled weather but used that time to go to shops. Overall the break was a PERFECT 10 outve 10 and exceeded my expectations. If you want peace and quiet this is the location you need but there is alot to do nearby if wanted, perfect for couples or if u are alone like myself, safe ,secure and beautiful. Thanks Karen,Nick & Sykes

Absolutely amazing place to stay!
On arrival Nick was there to greet us and showed us everything we needed like how to use the hot tub and where the logs were kept for the fire. He was very welcoming and informative. The photos don't do the hut justice and it was actually bigger than we thought it was going to be with enough storage for everything we took with us. The location of the hut is very private and not overlooked at all so it felt like we were deep in the woods but our hosts were close enough should we need anything. The hut and hot tub was spotless when we got there plenty of towels and everything we needed was provided. We loved watching the squirrels and bats and birds wich we saw daily, we also saw deer close by! We also had a hammock wich was a great bonus, super comfy and really nice to relax in while your waiting for the hot tub to warm up. We are definitely going to be returning soon, couldn't recommend staying here enough! Definitely worth what we paid and more! Thank you so much Nick and Karen!

I booked rockview shepherds hut for 4 nights for my wedding anniversary, my wife almost cried when she saw the photos, it looked perfect.
From the first contact with Nick & Karen via email we were made to feel special, the couple of questions we had were answered almost immediately. We didnât arrive until after 9pm and Nick had got the hot tub ready for us. Nick and Karen are wonderful hosts and nothing was too much for them. Nick explained how everything worked and immediately made us feel at home. The location was idyllic surrounded by a beautiful old wood, the hut is stunning inside and out and is of a very high standard. When we arrived thereâs was a vase of tulips on the table, a bottle of Prosecco in the fridge and a personalised anniversary card with some chocolates and fresh strawberries. After spending nearly 18 months at home it was the perfect location for our romantic getaway. I would highly recommend rockview shepherds hut and have actually passed the details to several friends. Nick and Karen thank you so much for letting us stay we had a wonderful, relaxed stay. Janet & Niki
