What our customers say about their holidays

We enjoyed our stay at the Shippen very much.
Its in a lovley scenic location, away from everything with countryside views but close enough for visits to Seaton,Budleigh Salterton,Exmouth,Sidmouth etc so it provided an ideal base for us. The owners Sue & Simon are available for advice if needed & left us fresh eggs, milk, apple juice & lovley cake. Our cottage was well equipped with a homely feel to it. We had a 4 berth cottage all ground floor & there are 2 more holiday lets there too (not single storey) so a larger family group could go together. Although we didnât use it,except to borrow dvds, the large gamesroom provided, table football, ping pong table, games, books, dvds & there were sofas to sit on too,it must be a great bonus for parents in wet weather! There are facilities for laundry in a nearby shared utility room,& good recycling boxes in the barn housing the bins, all clearly labelled so no guesswork! Outside there are ducks, chickens ,a crowing cockerel & some cows so any doggy visitors need to be on their leads! The Shippen has a patio with chairs & table for use on warmer days and thereâs a nice grassed orchard garden to the rear of the cottages available for guests to use. Itâs perfect for countryside lovers who want to get away from it all.

Wisteria cottage was the perfect cottage.
Stepping through the door we were greeted by a lovely slice of homemade cake, a bunch of fresh flowers, a packet of biscuits, a box of chocolates, a pint of fresh milk in the fridge and not to forget a jar of treats for our 4 legged family member. The cottage was warm and cosy and equipped with everything you could ever need and more. Darton and Maxine were the perfect hosts. Maxine looked after the cottage to a very high standard and served us in the restaurant she was always very pleasant to talk to and polite. Darton was the Chef who cooked the perfect Sunday Roast, which we ate in the restaurant and a lovely 3 course evening meal which he kindly delivered to the cottage as the restaurant was closed for evening meals at this time of the year (March). The cottage location was a perfect base for exploring the area. We would definitely recommend this Cottage to anyone and we will definitely be back for another stay.

Excellent stay and a lovely cottage.
The owners have gone above and beyond and have thought of everything you could possibly need, very impressed. We were welcomed to some lovely home made cake which was a delicious treat after our long drive,a box of chocolates, biscuits and a bottle of wine, They even thought to put a pint of milk in the fridge which again was a very nice thoughtful touch. The cottage itself was cosy but felt bigger because of the openness of the design which gives it a nice airy and spacious feel. Itâs a bit quirky and works well. For me it was a perfect holiday home. Even the wildlife was impressive, one morning a weasel ran across the lawn. My only slight criticism was that the bed felt slightly sunken in the middle,so not the perfect sleep but a new mattress would fix that. But overall we loved it ,very good stay and very well equipped ,I would happily book again next time I fancy a break in Devon.

Lovely little cottage, fabulous welcome pack, had everything well thought out and spotlessly clean.
The downside, unfortunately, is the access to the property. Had I known that it was up a steep slope with three lots of uneven steps, I would not have booked. From photograph it appears to just be up the first flight of steps (I'd be ok with that), but then there was a gravel slope, more steps (thank goodness for hand rail, the first step is quite challenging), then more loose gravel on another slope before final three steps. PHEW. I'm waiting for new knee and loose bricks and walking sticks do not mix! Could do with a new settee too. Peace and quiet was fabulous,, woken each morning by a song thrush and robin - lovely. I'd certainly recommend Wisteria Cottage but would suggest the access issue is more accurately documented and highlighted as not being suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Otherwise perfect ;)

The Shippen at Northleigh Farm is well away from the hustle and bustle of the major seaside towns.
For anyone who wants to get away to be deep in Devon countryside, where the only passing traffic is the local farmer on his tractor or a local going off to the shops. This is the place for you. The lanes surrounding the village of Northleigh are typically Devon ie narrow with high sides topped with 6 ft hedges. Good for long walks. The tourist traffic is well away to the north and south, so its only locals on the road. One day we met 2 cars en-route to Colyton , a distance of 4 miles. Sue is on hand in the background should you need to ask anything, but leaves you alone the rest of the time. A nice surprise was the home made cakes and bottle of apple juice made from the apples in the paddock. A good holiday was had at The Shippen.
