What our customers say about their holidays
Rob - Verified booking
We were really disappointed with Dyfi cottage.
So much so that after many many years and successful bookings of holidays via Sykes cottages, I am now very reluctant to use your site again. The cottage was in a rather dilapidated state, the kitchen and bathroom in particular were very poor. There were a number of issues like the bathroom window not being able to be opened, so no ventilation after showers. The shower was awful and the floor in the bathroom felt like it was about to give way under our feet because it had rotted behind the toilet. There was also roughly filled holes in the wall that had been un-finished. The kitchen was very scruffy and really needs replacing! Lots of small things put us off, like cobwebs and dust on furniture / picture frames etc. The door handle was snapped on the back of the master bedroom door. The bed in the master bedroom was so big it barely fitted in the room and was really uncomfortable to sleep on. The living room furniture was very uncomfortable and the used dog bed in there was very off putting. The whole of the downstairs smelt like damp dog and despite us buying air freshner and fabreze to try and get rid of the smell it lingered all week. When we arrived there were about 30 flies in the living room and kitchen and when I contacted the owner she said there was no fly spray or fly swat and there hadn't been any when she left that day, as if we were lying. General cleanliness was poor, there was old food left in the cupboards from previous holiday makers, random items of clothes left in drawers in the bedroom and bits of dog food left on the floor in the corner of the kitchen. As you can tell - we definitely wouldn't stay at the property again unless it was completely renovated. I think it was hugely over priced for the size and quality of the features within it. The only positive thing I could say is the location was nice. Otherwise it was thoroughly disappointing and I'm shocked that Sykes would feature such a property on their site and at such a high price. We paid nearly £1,000 to stay in something that was worse than I would expect from a youth hostel.

Thank you for a lovely stay.
We had such a lovely time, despite almost constant rain! Weâve been to the village several times before and it is still as beautiful. The house is really cosy and perfectly located. We would stay there again in a heartbeat and our little one declared it âhis new homeâ within about a day of being there. We did lots of (soggy!) walks, a visit to the copper mine (walkable from the house) and some time in Criccieth and a trip on the steam train. Some things that might be helpful to know for fellow dog / child owners! * I think the listing says there isnât a stair gate - but there is! Very hand to have for keeping dogs and toddlers where they should be! * There are dog bowls provided. *Yes, a travel cot fits in the room with the twin beds! We were concerned it might not, itâs hard to tell from the pics, but it just squeezed in. *Beddegelert is possibly the most dog friendly place on earth. Almost all pubs welcome dogs. Our dog loved it there and was very cosy in his bed by the fire. The back garden is enclosed on the lower level but if your dog is the exploring type I wouldnât leave unsupervised as they could definitely scrabble up the hill at the back. *Itâs also very kid friendly. The Prince Llewelyn in particular was so welcoming and a really laid back place to go with a toddler. As others noted - no there isnât a washing machine. It would be handy, especially with children, but itâs not the end of the world. The fridge is pretty small so donât do a huge shop! There is no freezer either. Limited utensils and basic supplies in the kitchen but we were able to make meals fine. The local store is lovely but incredibly expensive! We didnât use the shower in the bedroom - seems a bit random having one in there! I donât think itâs needed?! But the shower in the main bathroom was great. Heating is really effective. Thank you!

Dyfi Cottage is set in stunning countryside with lovely walks from the door and close by.
We found the people exceptionally friendly and helpful adding to the charm of the area. The opportunities for long, invigorating days out are plentiful. However part of the pleasure of a demanding day out is to return to your accommodation and relax in comfort. Sadly we were not able to do this in Dyfi Cottage. As you approach Dyfi Cottage the small front garden is very overgrown and the front window frame is rotten and needs replacing. You walk straight into the lounge which is quite dark and the settee and easy chairs did not seem clean. There is Now TV which was a welcome luxury. The kitchen behind the lounge was small but adequate. There were however a lot of flies. When we were preparing our first meal we found a tray of cold, stale chips in the oven which we certainly did not expect. The small dining room behind the kitchen has a washing machine and tumble dryer in it. These are obviously useful but somewhat intrusive and made the room feel cluttered. The carpets up the stairs and on the landing seem very old, tired and rather dirty, with some gaps/tears at the edges on the landing. The cottage does not appear to have been decorated for many years. The corner of the ceiling in the front bedroom was bulging and appeared to be at risk of coming down. The fourposter bed was an amusing touch but in a small bedroom made getting around the room awkward. At times when we moved the pillows and bedding we noticed a faint unpleasant smell. The garden at the rear is also in need of care and attention. The waterfall is beautiful but very loud. However it was still very nice to sit out in. Unfortunately we were not able to feel completely relaxed at Dyfi and despite having some lovely days out we decided to come home a day early.

Location great, beautiful views and village to stay in.
When we walked in through the back door, we nearly couldnt get in, the door mat was wedged behind the door, and the floor was discoloured and had water damage. Our first night was spent cleaning the kitchen and fridge out, the worktops looked clean but to touch they weren't, dog hairs in the fridge and on the side. Opened the cupboards in the kitchen to use the utensils/plates and there was a funny stale smell. Nothing felt clean had to wash cups etc before using. Cobwebs in the corners in every room, window ledges full of dust in the living room. Cushions and throws smelt old and musty. Upstairs was better, beds were clean and comfortable but TLC needed to bring the property back to a good condition. Damp patches in the second bedroom. Could do with an extractor fan in the main bathroom, no window to open so ends up very damp. No bath mat for the floor, had to use a towel as would have slipped stepping out of the shower. Used the wood burner on the first night and it was rocking on the floor, it was loose to the flue going into the top of the wood burner, didn't feel safe using it after that. Outside the garden really needed maintenance, loads of weeds and moss not like the photos. I've stayed in properties before that allow dogs and we think this was the main reason for the smell downstairs but haven't noticed it in other pet friendly cottages before. Overall we were out every day and only back at night and decided not to cook any meals there because of the above reasons so we ended up just using it as a Base. We think with the above things being sorted and just investment putting into the cottage, it could be an amazing place.

Nice cottage, lovely location.
However Within minutes of arriving at the cottage we picked 2 fleas off our dogs. As they were both up to date with their regular flea and worm treatment from the vet I emailed Sykes immediately to alert them but did not ask for any action as I was thinking that it would not be a big problem as both dogs were treated. Unfortunately as the week went on we picked off more fleas - dying because the chemicals in the dogs blood stream was killing them- and humans were bitten. When notified - and with photographic evidence- the owners said the fleas must have been picked up from somewhere else as they had just had the house fumigated. So apparently somewhere on the nonstop 2 hour car journeyâ¦.. so whilst the owners admitted they had a flea problem they have refused to admit that they might still have a flea problem. We are out of pocket as we had to buy spray from pets at home on the way home to avoid the potential of bringing home a rogue live flea as advised by our vet and wash all dog beds/ shampoo the dogs/ spray the cars⦠not a relaxing end to the Christmas break. I wouldnât say it spoiled Christmas- but very upset at no attempt at finding a reasonable resolution or even reassurance that they will treat the cottage again to ensure other dogs donât suffer.
