What our customers say about their holidays

From the moment we arrived at the lodge, we were enveloped in peace and tranquility.
With horses and pheasants as our nearest neighbours, it truly felt like a home away from home. The lodge itself was super clean and modern, striking the perfect balance between contemporary comforts and rustic charm. The beds were incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful nightâs sleep after a day of exploring the great outdoors. Speaking of which, the nature views were a highlight of our stay. The gentle flow of the river nearby provided a serene backdrop for our morning coffee. For those of us who appreciate a good cup of joe, the Nespresso coffee machine and French press were much appreciated touches that catered to our caffeine needs. The kitchen was well-equipped with all the necessary appliances, including a dishwasher, making meal prep a breeze. After our adventurous, albeit muddy walks, the washing machine with a dryer was a godsend. It made our stay that much easier, ensuring we always had clean, dry clothes ready for the next dayâs activities. The hosts were nothing short of wonderful, providing great recommendations for local restaurants and breakfast spots. Their helpfulness added a personal touch to our stay, making us feel well-cared for. In summary, our stay at the lodge was nothing short of perfect. Itâs a place we would recommend to anyone looking for a clean, modern, and comfortable retreat in nature. Thank you for making our getaway so memorable!

I stayed in one of the Lodges with 2 other adults and 2 dogs in late June 2024.
We all agreed that the accommodation was superb and will probably book again next year There are 9 Lodges spaced well apart in an area of wild meadow with a river flowing through the land. Each Lodge has it's own private patio with our door eating area and barbecue. There is very little traffic noise and the atmosphere is very peaceful and relaxing. The accommodation is very spacious, modern and clean. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to buy food from a nearby Booths supermarket and cook most of our meals on site. We had everything we needed in our Lodge to make our stay comfortable, such as washing machine, dish washer and flat screen TV. There was also a touch of luxury with an nespresso coffee machine complete with pods and some locally produced toiletries. We spent our holiday walking, going to the nearby coast and visiting a couple of nearby stately homes. We were very lucky to have warm sunny weather for most of our stay, but would have enjoyed the holiday regardless of the weather. Most of the outings we did required a short journey in the car, but we didn't have to travel for more than half an hour. There is a pub which serves good food and a station cafe within walking distance. I don't usually leave reviews but this accommodation was very good and I'd like others to know about it.

We had a lovely few days away at High Rigg - thank-you.
The property was unique and quirky and very peaceful. The hot tub was fantastic and we enjoyed a lovely BBQ in the sunshine! Comfy bed and very clean when we turned up. The shepherds pies in the fridge was a lovely welcome touch. In the spirit of honesty, there are definitely some things that could improve the ease of stay, especially those guests staying for more than a couple of days: 1. Scissors in the kitchen 2. The chairs were far too big, we spent most of the time moving them around so we could cook comfortably 3. The path from the parking space to the hut is half slabs half grass - this would be really tricky in winter! 4. Spare bin bags would be good⦠1 for a 4 night stay isnât enough⦠5. A small freezer section in the fridge would be great as some ice for your drinks would be nice to have 6. Knives were very blunt, we could barely cut an onion up Unfortunately on our departure day, we were packing the car an hour and a half (8:30am) before check out (10am) and we had one of the owners ask if the hot tub could be emptied⦠we were still moving our belongings out and felt this was a bit inappropriate. Overall we had a very nice relaxing break and would recommend for those couples aiming for a romantic break.

We all could not have been happier with Howgills Retreat, we planned to just use it as a base to travel into the Lake District every day but we found ourselves wanting to spend more and more time relaxing at the lodge.
It was impeccably clean, quite modern while having tons of character, has a lovely view (sunsets were breathtaking), has a very well specced kitchen, well-decorated living space, great clean bathroom, large comfortable bedrooms, nice patio area... I could go on. It honestly felt like our little home, none of us wanted to leave. Before we arrived I managed to get myself lost (whilst actually only being 1 minute around the corner), so I called the owner and she was lovely and patient as I fumbled with a map trying to describe where I was. They had left us some treats and a nice letter welcoming us all, including the dog which was a nice touch! Speaking of the dog, he loved it. There is a grass field next to the lodge, there were some fence posts up without any wire so I'm not sure if this will always be accessible but he loved exploring that area. You have to be comfortable driving on some smaller lanes to access the property (nothing bad) and it's next to a working farm so you will be neighbours to sheep and horses etc, we loved this. I can't remember the last time I felt as relaxed. Thanks for the incredible stay, we will be back, hopefully this winter to cosy up by the fireplace.

Lovely shepherd hut stay on the whole.
Location fab, hot tub perfect. Bed really comfy.great place for a chill. However couple of niggles. The path to the hut is appalling. Few slabs then grass only and was basically a mud bath for a good 50m. Wellies or walking boots were a must. This really needs to be dealt with. The hut had a fridge with no ice compartment so if you want to sit and sip a g&t on veranda then you wonât have any ice! I think bearing in mind the cost then really the ice compartment should be there. Also only one toilet roll left - we were there 4 days so had to go and buy more. I think that is ridiculous. When you pay a lot of money these are things you shouldnât have to think about. Also the table is too high for the lovely chairs so when you are eating itâs quite awkward. And there was only a tiny little swivel mirror in bathroom. A mirror on wall would make more sense. The shepherds pie and fizz that was left was a lovely gesture. The shepherds pie was lovely but very peppery. We would definitely stay again but feel these minor niggles would make a huge difference if they were resolved.
