What our customers say about their holidays

  • Melanie - Verified booking

This Spa could be so much more.

I really don't know where to start. My stay consisted of myself, husband child of 12 and 2 elderly parents (in their 80s). After a speedy, courteous check in we were shown by map where our lodge was situated, (note to anyone with a disability the parking can sometimes be a distance from the car parking area to you lodge) was even more of a headache when you have to unpack and make 10 journeys with all you luggage!! Initial look of the lodges and surroundings were really lovely, and well presented. However when we started to unpack and put things away, we immediately noticed that the kitchenette, that is advertised is merely a micorwave/cooker toaster and kettle (how you are supposed to prepare a meal in this was mindboggling), that said there were insufficient plates, bowls etc, no larger bowls to cook anything in microwave/cooker, no chopping boards, sharp knives, wooden spoons, even a tea towels was none existent etc you get the picture like nothing!! I asked reception for these utensils - response was microwave was solely for warming food up?! I did state that it was a microwave/cooker but was informed that they didn't have anything like this, we were given more crockery, and they tried with larger pasta bowls but that was it. We then noticed we didn't have any robes to use the spa, so again went to reception and asked, housekeeping did bring some along and apologised stating they would bring some of the slippers the next day, this never happened! The lodge looked dirty cobwebs in the shower areas, cigarette butts where the hot tub is (at the back of the lodge), there was a brush and dust pan no hoover to clean any spills up. I asked housekeeping how did we get our towels changed I was informed that we had to ask for housekeeping and they would sort this. This never happened. In my parents room there was no blind/curtains at their bedroom window - not what you want when undressing etc - again went to reception this was rectified the next day. The mess from the drilling on the wall was never cleaned away bits of brick dust etc on the floor and nothing to clean it away with again asked for housekeeping never came. Now into day 2 of our 7 night stay and we had a blocked drain in our walk in shower room, the water was pouring into the lounge area, which we had to mop up with towels, my husband spoke to 4 members of staff over 2 days to ask for this to be rectified, and for all the dirty towels to be removed and given clean ones - shower drain was eventually unblocked however the towels were simply pushed into the other corner of the bathroom and no clean ones replace nor did the housekeeping clean the bathroom from the dirty water!! I had to carry all the dirty towels to reception collect clean ones and raise my concern that this was not good enough! We again spoke to staff that they was a leak on the kitchen sink and the en-suite bathroom sink no-one came, and to be honest got sick of going back and forwards to ask for clean towels. At no one given time did any member of housekeeping refresh clean towels, mop the floors hoover around or remove the rubbish ( I may add that there was nowhere to place you household rubbish so once again my husband had to carry and find a larger kitchen bin which was situated around the kitchen area of the spa)!! At the end of our stay another visitor had disposed of there household rubbish pizza boxes etc was strewn all over the lawns in front of us and seagulls and birds were feeding at a frenzy! There was ants and on our 5 night stay when looking at how bad the leak was under the kitchen sink, noticed we had had a visitor in the form of a mouse!! The spa itself was lovely and so were the staff we had encountered, however our stay was really spoilt due to the lack of cleanliness, and constant back and forth with reception. Would never return no would I recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at Enia lodge.

It was everything we were looking for to escape our busy lives and just switch off and relax. First thing to mention is that the map on Sykes Cottages doesn’t take you to the right place. Best to use what 3 words and type in ///ship.simmer.frost. It’s obvious when you’re in the right place as you can clearly see the lodges from the road and there’s a clear entrance. It’s an absolutely stunning lodge, clean and cosy, and very well laid out to accommodate 4 guests although there were only 2 of us and a little basket of complimentary snacks which was a lovely touch. Having read others reviews, we would agree that space for storage was a bit of a challenge as the bedrooms are snug and with no underbed space, and just a coat hanger rail, it did mean our suitcases had to be kept at the side of the beds that we’d have to step over, but there are small drawers in the bedside tables. We used the 2nd bedroom for storage but would be a bit more challenging for a family of 4, but should not put you off staying at this beautiful place! The beds were comfy, I would say they’re about medium firmness, we have a firmer mattress at home but had no issues and had good nights sleep. Mattresses are a personal preference and it’s impossible to get it right for everyone, so anyone concerned about mattresses should consider bringing their own suitable topper instead of giving this lovely place less of a rating! We do feel that instead of the sofa in the kitchen, it would be a good idea for some kind of wardrobe space to be placed there instead, as there is a lovely sofa in the little snug lounge anyway. The kitchen had everything we needed and all the condiments are provided (tea, coffee, sugar, UHT milk, but we did bring our own milk just in case). There were adequate toilet rolls and fairy liquid, sponge and tea towels provided for dishes. We didn’t use the dishwasher as there were only 2 of us. One thing we didn’t think of to bring was cooking oil for the pans. We only used the frying pan but a small amount of oil would have been useful to have there as the pan isn’t non stick! We did go and buy some but the food still stuck in the frying pan, although it helped. The hot tub was amazing! Perfect for soaking after a long hike! Top tip for anyone using this in the winter months and there’s only 2 of you, if you only fold half of the lid back it stops the water cooling too quickly, and then you also have a platform to put your plastic glasses on, as there isn’t really anything around it to rest them on securely. The floating drinks holder is not worth the risk! We are lucky to only live 45 mins away from this place and we cannot wait to come back again for another escape! Thank you so much to the owners for creating such a lovely place. We will be recommending to friends and family!!

Arrived a little later for checkin as unfortunately SatNav took us on a detor!

Once we had arrived, we were met by the cutest Lodge, Besti! Every room we went in we coo'd and ahhh'd over because each room was cute and perfect for it's use. The added touch of Christmas decorations was amazing, I did remember reading about possible decorations but a tree with lights, festive cushions, wreath and a centre piece was above our expectation. With us being a family of 4 we had 2 bedrooms with 1 ensuite and a 'family bathroom' both very similar in size. Again, small but perfectly formed, very modern and clean too! The living room had the tree and a corner sofa with a TV - perfect for Christmas movies! Both bedrooms were with double beds (unfortunately, my two aren't fans of sharing beds so they took it in turns to sleep on a sofa and one in the bed - they did talk about wishing it was bunk beds instead). The rooms had a small pole with coathangers for a wordrobe, again, cleverly designed due to the size of the lodge, with 2x bedside cabinets. The kitchen area was the centre of the lodge with a fully fitted kitchen, integrated appliances, a lovely oak dining table & a sofa! We managed to make a full Christmas dinner and had no issues, oven & hob really easy to use - dishwasher not marvellous (although we don't own a dishwasher so wasn't too sure if we had used it properly - potentially needs a deep clean as some of the glasses & plates still had water marks on them) it did not effect our stay so no big deal! Onto the hot tub....WOW! Perfect on an evening, with an outdoor fridge & table area. It was so lovely to sit & relax with a glass (plastic glasses due to the request of the owners guide) of prosecco watching the sheep and the hills. We were lucky in the fact there wasn't many guests on site so it really felt like we were alone and had the whole garden space (which was fenced off from the sheep but plenty of room to feel like open space) to ourselves. We did have an issue with the hot tub as it became abit smelly a few days in, so we attempted to empty the water and contact the guest services who were helpful and talk my husband through the process. Around the lodge, we saw sooo many sheep & pheasants. It was so picturesque, we all enjoyed the scenery & nature. Apart from the lodge, we were able to drive short distances to various National Parks for dog walks and searching for waterfalls. We visited ZipWorld which was a lovely afternoon out. We got home, unpacked and are looking at dates again for next year - definitely recommend. Thankyou for such a special Christmas.

    Hmmmmmm...

..Sweeping Cobwebs!! And spider heaven... I used the vacuum and went over every room! Sooo many historic cobwebs. Unfortunately vacuum cleaner useless too...so I can understand why the gaps and edges were not done as nozzle doesn't come apart and it's missing a wheel! I also cleaned the 2 bathroom sinks and toilet as these were dirty. The bathroom radiator towel rails had splash marks too so not cleaned. Blinds in all rooms thick with dust (I didn't attempt them!) We had a list of issues on arrival...the 2 phone numbers on the wall are useless! One is the old number not even on the network and the other one is an ex partner! Also...Tracy (who Sykes recommends to call) we also had no reply from! It wasn't until the Wednesday that a couple of maintenance guy's who my husband saw on site eventually did come in and placed 2 new bulbs in cooker hood, mended the window (handle on wrong so wasn't locking), battery in the wall clock and correct cable for the dvd player!! It's the attention to detail that's missing in this lodge which is described as a luxury pad for 2! Now...on a plus! Hot tub just lovely, and very private. Bed, very comfortable and huge. Towels supplied lovely. Private Lodge and in a lovely area to explore. Please listen to and act on these issues... I think things have just been missed over time and let slip. A really good spring clean...and a few new bits of furniture I'm sure will make a massive difference to future guests visiting.... And remove the numbers from the wall and update!! Karen

The property was beautiful and well maintained.

The views are incredible and it didnt go unnoticed that every aspect of the design and layout of the lodge was around getting the best of the views. The welcome basket of snacks was a lovely gesture and every detail was thought of from toilet roll and hand soup in every bathroom to dishwasher tablets, surface spray and and a selection of cloths in the kitchen. The fresh milk ready in the fridge along with supplied tea, coffee and sugar just added to the luxurious feel. The hot tub and outside breakfast bar and fridge are impressive. It was great to get there and the hot tub up to temperature and ready to go. We loved spending the time on there watching the sunsets and sunrise, the views and the sheep. The kitchen was fitted and provided with everything needed and the while lodge provided comfort and luxury Nit picking and personal preference even though there is the breakfast bar type set up outside as it is under the cover of the lodge porch it would be amazing to have a picnic table or something on the grass area close to the bbq so when its sunny you can sit in the sun as the sun doesn't really get onto the covered area. But that is personal preference as we like to sit in the sunshine (whens its actually out ) We absolutely loved our stay and have already spread the word and shared the link to the property to friends and family as well as decided a date when to book again for ourselves.
